Hope everyone had a great 4th!! The farm went a combined 3-3, as one recent top draft pick had a night of firsts. Check out the details below…
- Tyler Greene had a 2-run shot on the ninth to go along with 4 hits in 5 appearances. He was also hit by a pitch
- Adron Chambers led off and was 2-5
- Matt Carpenter had a hit in his only at-bat before being replaced by Donovan Solano, who went 1-3 with a RBI
- Bryan Anderson had a solo-HR as his only hit
- Adam Ottavino went 6 innings and gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and struck out 3. He keeps posting decent enough numbers, but he has yet to improve enough to indicate he’d have consistent success in the majors.
- Jermaine Curtis started at 3rd and hit 2-4 with a double and RBI
- Eric Duncan also went 2-4 but replaced the double with a walk
- Jose Garcia led off and was 2-5 with a walk
- D’Marcus Ingram had a double as his only hit in 4 AB
- Both Ryan Jackson and Matt Adams finished 1-4
- I’m pretty sure Kevin Thomas doesn’t want this information public, but he gave up 11 runs in just an inning and a third of work
- Niko Vasquez went 3-4 and was the only Palm Beach hitter to get more than 1 hit
- Robert Stock had a double and 2 walks on the night and has a respectable slash line of .282/.333/.385 in a limited number of at-bats since being promoted
- Alan Ahmady also had a double and 2 walks, but he added 2 RBI
- Greg Garcia had a double as his only hit in 5 plate appearances
- Joe Kelly gave up 2 runs, 3 hits, struck out 5, and had 11 groundouts to 3 in the air in 6.2 innings tonight. He was a bit wild with 4 walks, but he also only gave up 1 extra-base hit
- Kolten Wong hit his first home run of his young professional career. He finished 1-4 on the night with a walk, but I also have to be the one to inform everybody that he recorded his first career strikeout.
- Nick Longmire and Colin Walsh both went 1-4 with a double
- Boone Whiting was his same dominate self after he gave up 1 run (0 earned) over 7 innings. He gave up just 5 hits and 1 walk. He also struck out 7 and 9 out of the 10 outs he recorded in the field came via the groundball.
- Romulo Ruiz had the only extra-base hit of the night for Batavia , which was a double, and finished 2-4 on the night
- Juan Castillo had a hat trick in strikeouts and was 1-4
- Mike O’Neill led off the game and went hitless but also walked twice
- Jonathan Cornelius (not related to the ape from Planet of the Apes) gave up just 1 hit in 4 scoreless innings. He also struck out 4
- Gary Apelian went a 3-4 with a triple, HR, walk, and 4 RBI
- Anthony Garcia and Steven Ramos finished 2-4
- David Washington hit a 2-run shot in the 2nd
- Joshua Lucas gave up 9 hits (2 doubles and a homer), 3 runs, and struck out 2 in 3.2 innings

Kevin Thomas was the organizational pitcher of the month in May, another steady decline from a springfield pitcher.
Former Cardinal Gary Daley was the winning pitcher against Springfield.
Wong has a .446wOBAr and a .200 BABIP. Massively unlucky so far in a tiny sample.
@BC. In the one game.I saw him play, he hit a couple.of.line.drives right at fielders.
I love Wong’s walk rate thus far. This pick is growing on me
I have to admit i was pretty pissed at the kolten wong signing at first, I thought it was another Kozma all over again but with a little research and seeing him so far in his pro career i was very wrong and i like the pick more and more espeically since we are in need of good IF depth
Springfield’s pitching roster other than Shelby is a wasteland. I guess Freeman could be interesting. Looks like almost every guy worth paying attention to is injured – Hooker, Mulligan, Gorgen, etc. I wish they’d promote Kelly. I think he’s a reliever long-term but might as well get him moving up.
I agree but I will add that Nick Greenwood and John Gast (well see if he has a good start tonight) are two other interesting guys in Springfield; but outside of those two, Shelby and Sam Freeman. Springfields pitching has been horrible.
IMO, the time that I saw Mulligan pitch I was not impressed at all.
Agreed about Gast – I was ignoring him as he just arrived but he could be interesting as well.
What ever happened to Bryan Martinez?? Is he hurt or something? He was one that I thought could be “one to watch”.
I think there might be an article mentioning him on scout.com but I don’t have a membership to the site. The article is called “Cards Minor Leaguers: Who and Where They Are” and the snippet says, “Checking in on a dozen St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers that may have slipped through the cracks”.
The article is dated June 20, 2011.

When you’re ranking the list of the top 40 players like scout does, how do some slip through the cracks? You’re ranking 40 guys! There are times I think ranking 20 is too many.
Saw Wong on July 4 at Kane County. Pretty impressive. His home run was drilled to the opposite-field. A rocket. Then, on his next at-bat, he ripped a hard out to center field. As a hitter, he’s got great balance and plate coverage. Quick wrests. The ball jumps off his bat. And he just looks the part in the field. Plays on his toes. He especially looked good on a slow roller, which he charged and flipped submarine-style to first for the out. He was the most polished player on the field. No doubt, he will move fast in the system.
