The farm had a perfect night, while one top prospect continued to mash.  Check out the details below!

Ok, so a perfect night means 2-0, but both teams combined to score 22 runs!

Springfield 13, Midland 3

  • Matt “Patch” Adams was tired of hitting below .350, so he went 3-4 with a grand slam in the 7th
  • Charles Cutler was 4-5 with a solo-HR in the 3rd
  • Daryl Jones went retro with a Texas League HR to go along with his 2 walks
  • Jose Garcia led off and was 3-6 with a solo-bomb of his own
  • Ryan Jackson hit 2nd and went 1-4 with a walk
  • Zack Cox had a double among his 2 hits
  • Eric Duncan was the only Springfield batter to not record a hit or walk
  • Scott Schneider gave up 1 run in 5 innings of work. He struck out 4 and gave up 3 hits and 2 walks. 7 of the 9 outs recorded in the field came via the ground
  • Eduardo Sanchez continued his rehab assignment, as he struck out 2 in 2 scoreless innings.  He also threw a wild pitch

Johnson City 9, Greeneville 4

What does Adams have to prove at AA? I mean hes totally destroying the texas league they have to make room for him in memphis already.

    • JBCardsFan says:

I’m still subscribing to the theory that Johnny Mo is keeping him at AA because he’s succeeding there and wants to keep up any trade value he might have.

Hoping I’m wrong because Adams is important Pujols insurance. Need to see him in AAA sooner than later so the Cards can get an adequate picture of what they have in him.

      • Hugecardsfan says:

Until Pujols is decided, they can’t be looking to trade Adams. Pujols’ performance this year has resolved nothing regarding a long term contract.

I won’t be surprised if they send Adams to Memphis but won’t be shocked if he stays in Springfield either. He did a double leap to get there and they have to all be enjoying the ease with which he accomplished that. I doubt anything he does in Memphis as a 22 year old would dissuade them of his trade value.

As a side note, this team seems to have jelled offensively and the organization may want to let them play together a bit longer.

    • cariocacardinal says:

I think he might still be in AA because they are trying to work with him on taking more walks. His walk rate is up to about 12% since the all star break. That has coincided with a mini-slump (OPS below 1.000). Whther this is planned or just happening I don’t know. His breakout from the mini-slump could mean an abandoning of this new attempt or it could mean nothing in that regard.

Theory 2 is that they like what is learning from the Springfield hitting coach (derrick May?) and dont want to mess with that.

      • Jeffery says:

May is not the hitting coach at Springfield this year. I believe he is the roving hitting instructor. He was in Springfield the last home stand.

Check out those first 5 guys the S-Cards pillaged tonight stats in the TL this year.

Shawn Haviland 7.71 ERA and .331 BAA
Jonathan Ortiz 5.40 ERA and .296 BAA
Fabian Williamson 6.35 ERA and .315 BAA
Jared Lansford 6.14 ERA and .325 BAA
Andrew Carignan 9.00 ERA and .471 BAA

I’m fully aware Texas League is a hitters league but I don’t think I have ever seen 5 guys that bad in a row work a game in a row. It was also nice to see Eduardo Sanchez have a nice outing after the two bad ones, hope this speeds up his extended stay they are giving him.

  3. Mizzcards says:

My top 6 hitters to watch in AA & AAA:

    Adams
    Cox
    Cutler
    Anderson
    Hamilton
    Brown

  4. cariocacardinal says:

Cutler is just raking. Too bad he can’t catch very well. IF he keeps hitting like this they might give him a longer look there though. Not too good in the OF either I hear.

  5. cariocacardinal says:

    Schneider continues to tease.

  6. RichardRich says:

Jose Garcia is hitting a HR once every 38.33 AB at Hammons Field with 6 of his 14 career HR there, its 120.5 on the road in the Texas League and is once every 287.83 in his career outside of the Texas League!

  7. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

I thought home run derby was last night?

  8. Michael says:

Where can I find a list of this years draft signings?

  9. pitch and hit says:

You know guys, keep in mind that last nights pitcher made mince meat of them a few weeks ago.
I am not sure what would have occured if that happened again.

Springfield’s ERA needs much improvement as well. So does their sloppy defense (5 errors the other night).

When you go to watch a game, thereis a lot going on besides on the field, keep that in mind. At this point in the year, it is what it is, springfield MAY have a chance, no way is Pop going down without a fight.

  10. PJ says:

    Would you….

Trade Colby and Shelby for Matt Moore, Josh Sale, and Tim Beckham?

    • hurricane jake says:

As much as I love Shelby; I would say yes (ducks…).
And yes I realize this a pipe dream scenario and would probably never happen.

    • Felonius_Monk says:

Not sure I do that; absolutely love Moore but Beckham’s looking like a slightly younger Ryan Jackson at this point. He could still come good but who knows. Not that keen on high school hitters but I guess Sale is a good one. Hmmm, maybe I do it. Who knows!

I suppose I’d trade Colby or Shelby for Moore quite happily, so it’s trading the other one for Sale + Beckham. Hmmmm…

    • All I can say is if you watched the ASG last night you can see good pitching will stop good hitting every time. I say hang on to our young pitchers!!

    • T Bird says:

I think Colby alone might be able to justify that return, or at least Colby and a mid-level prospect like Lance Lynn. I see that package as one elite prospect (Moore) and two mid-level guys, although Sale is very projectable. I think the author of this piece at the Daily Dish was pretty accurate when he said Colby should command at least one elite prospect and two B guys. Throwing Shelby into the mix would require at least two elite prospects, maybe three. Here’s the link:

      http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2011/7/12/2272207/cardinals-rumors-colby-rasmus-trades-possible-destinations#storyjump

My favorite package from the article is Viscaino and Minor from the Braves for Colby (straight up).

Personally, I’d like a package built around Hellickson from the Rays, maybe with Sale or Beckham thrown in for Colby.

      • Felonius_Monk says:

Then I think you’re massively over-valuing three arby years of Colby Rasmus. Moore is a massive prospect, perhaps top-5 in baseball, almost certainly top-10 right now, up there and perhaps even better than Shelby Miller. Sale was a first-round pick and probably isn’t a million miles off the top 50, on projectability alone. Beckham is kinda meh now but I think he could be a league average guy, he’d be somewhere in the ballpark of Kolten Wong as a prospect (perhaps between Wong and Jackson in our MIF list). Colby for Moore alone would be a great haul IMO.

Would you have traded Shelby Miller (now) for BJ Upton a little over a year ago? That’s a fair comp for the Rasmus for Moore trade. I wouldn’t have done that, personally.

I’d probably trade Colby straight up for Hellickson as well, although the fact his strikerate seems to have gone through the floor this year worries me a bit. Sale (and, to a lesser extent, Beckham) are more than just throw-ins. Sale might be the 3rd best prospect in our system, and Beckham might just about scrape into the top 10.

  11. Brian B says:

I’m happy for Springfield, the team is making a great come back. Pitchers are pitching better and the players are batting better. No reason why that can’t make it to playoffs. There team is full of talent, Adam, Jackson, Castellanos, Duncan, Cox even Garcia and Cutler. Perez has great potential just needs to improve on throwing to the bases and getting runners out. Cutler was tired of sitting and has proven he can play ball and wants his position back. Great job from Adam and Cutler. Keep the wins coming.

  12. JBCardsFan says:

Good to see that Sanchez finally pitched well. He was having me worried by his struggles. Let’s hope he keeps dominating AA hitters and finds his form.

    • Felonius_Monk says:

Agreed. I really thought he was done for the year when he went down with shoulder issues. The big question is whether he gets his velo and control back, but sounds like he’s well on the way. The success of Boggs and Lynn, so far, is making him less indispensible in the pen, though, so hope they take their time.

  13. pitch and hit says:

If you know about Shelby, I mean really know what he does that is so special, you wouldn’t even think that.
You will let him take his time in grwoing up (which is the plan) you just might have another great franchise player someday.

Sanchez is fine, he isn’t afraid to pitch inside (as some of the guys are not) so you are gonna hit batters. Once they get hit with a 95 mph fb they back off, that’s the game plan, as is the once in a while wild pitch, that is part of who Sanchez is. The problem is the officiating just is bad news.

  14. Mizzcards says:

    Here’s a trade that would make sense…

How about Colby Rasmus & Kyle McClellan to TB for David Price?

Or Colby Rasmus & McClellan for Craig Kimbrel?

    Any takers???

    • kdizzle says:

      Rasmus for a rookie reliever?

      A possible 5 or 6 WAR player for a 2 WAR player?

      • kdizzle says:

I’m sorry if I’m coming off as an annoyance, but this closer fetish that too many baseball fans seem to have these days exasperates me.

Trading everyday players for one inning relievers(who aren’t really the relievers getting the most important outs) that will give you at most 65 or 70 innings in a season, makes absolutely no sense.

I’d sooner make Shelby Miller a reliever than trade someone like Rasmus for Kimbrell.

      • Mizzcards says:

I actually highly doubt that Atlanta would even make the trade of Rasmus straight up for Kimbrel. Kimbrel is 23 years old and has became a lights out closer.

If this trade could happen and thats a big if. It would allow Lance Lynn to move into the rotation and Kimbrel to close up the 9th inning and BP problems. Having Salas & Sanchez available for the 8 innings & Motte & Boggs in the 7th innings would definitely clear things up. And think of it this way to are trade age appropriate commodities. Not trading 23 years olds for 32 year old closers.

        • Felonius_Monk says:

I think Atlanta take that in a heart-beat. Not all GMs are Ed Wade stupid, and a 3-4 WAR CF for three years is way more valuable than any closer in baseball. You can just go out and sign a pitcher as good as Kimbrel every year for about $10m. You can’t simply go out and get a high-quality CF for that price.

And I don’t think the Colby + KMac for Price deal works tbh. The Rays have no need for KMac so he’s basically a throw-in at this point. They have at least 6 better starting pitchers, and he’s only a middle reliever in their pen so might even get non-tendered next year. Price is now one of the best starters in baseball, and has been amazing this year in a really tough league, dropping his walkrate pretty much in half whilst maintaining an elite K rate. He’s better than Colby right now, by quite some distance IMO, and they’re at the same stage in their contract status I believe.

Colby + something for Shields is more realistic, and again that’s a trade I make in a second, but really I don’t see why the Rays need a CF. I guess they could move him to LF but unless they’re doing something like Upton + Prospect for 3 years of Colby, I don’t see them having a massive need for Rasmus right now.

          • Mizzcards says:

The thing that I am looking at with Price is he will be arb eligible and will be getting a huge raise and we all know what TB does when their players get raises. I would love to see Price in a STL uniform.

            • Felonius_Monk says:

Rasmus is arb-eligible and will be getting a substantial raise. Rasmus + KMac (who will both be getting pay-raises through arby next year) may end up being paid MORE than Price (who is, like Colby, going into his first year of arby). How do the Rays save any money by making this trade? They get worse and don’t save anything. No way they do this.

    • kdizzle says:

And I doubt that Tampa Bay would be looking to their major league roster for the players they would like to send to St. Louis. Nor would they be likely to send someone like Moore in that type of trade. Moore is the type of pitcher you trade for a Felix Hernandez or Matt Kemp type. A superstar type player not a good(albeit high potential) type like Rasmus.

A name like Desmond Jennings(which would probably make the most sense) or Josh Sale plus a Jake McGee or Chris Archer would be much more likely.

    • RichardRich says:

What sucks is over the winter we might had a legit at Kimbrel and Beachy for Colby when his value was peaking, But you can’t trade McClellan right now since the ideal plan is to move him back to the BP since he shuts down left handed bats if a SP can be had.
