Wow. Seth Blair really kind of sucks this season.

  2. Shanky says:

Don’t expect to see Wong and Taveras (sounds like a cop buddy flick) much longer at QC.

  3. PJ says:

    Over a 162 game season, Zack Cox’s line would be: 302, 13, 73.

If this is what he can bring to the big league club as a LH hitting 3B, I would be relatively excited.

    • PJ says:

If he can bring it as a decent defensive 2B, I would be absolutely thrilled!

      • Shanky says:

I agree PJ. Call me old fashioned, but I like some power at the corner spot. Unless he’s hitting .330+ consistently with a .900+ OPS, of course. but I just don’t see him hitting with that kind of production in the majors. I still think Cox is destined to be traded at some point this season or next, with the Walrus trade as the blueprint. . .esp with Freese healthy now and Wong looking like the future at 2B.

      • Cardinals645 says:

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the Cox-2B thing was mostly a pre-draft rumor that some teams might see Cox as a 2B. To my knowledge, the Cardinals haven’t said anything to indicate they’ll ever try Cox at 2B, and his defensive reviews at 3B haven’t been much better than ‘adequate’.

    • Vision says:

We have seen how much Springfield boosts power, especially HR’s.

We see Cox crushing the ball at home, and having an OPS in the .600′s on the road, and a slugging % in the mid-.300′s.

Color me not convinced about Mr. Cox and his numbers largely propped up at home.

  4. Kevin says:

It appears that Roberto De La Cruz has figured something out, it would be encouraging if he continues to do well.

  5. Lou Schuler says:

As of this morning, Cox has 108 hits in 92 games at 2 levels. I’d like to see a higher OBP (.359 for the season, .341 in AA), and of course more power, but we’re still talking about a guy who’s been a pro for all of 11 months.

In his final year at Arkansas (which was only his second on the field), he had 102 hits in 59 games.

The summer before, when he was the #2 prospect in the Cape Cod League, he had a .344 batting average, which was about 80 points higher than his BA his first year of college ball.

He just looks like a guy whose value will come from a high BA driven by total hits, vs. a high OBP driven by selectivity. A major leaguer who, at his peak, might be good for 200 hits a year is a good guy to have at the top of your order.

    • azruavatar says:

That last line made me think of Michael Young. Take a look at his 2003-2007 seasons. Average over .300 with a mid .300s OBP. Young was never a good defender at SS and looks (statistically) like he’s a bit below average at 3rd. I don’t hate a Young-Cox comparison the more I think about it but that seems like the optimistic end of the spectrum.

      • BigJawnMize says:

Yeah this is a really useful player…I think the main critism is that you dont overpay for Young as the Rangers did nor should you over pay for Cox as the Cardinals slightly did in this case.

        • Lou Schuler says:

Agree on both points. 200 hits a year is optimistic, and we did overpay. But he was a draft-eligible sophomore with a legit option to return to Arkansas.

In past years we’ve criticized the Cards for being timid on over-slot guys, so it’s hard to fault them for rolling the dice here.

    • zuke354 says:

I see more Bill Mueller than I do Michael Young.

  6. JC says:

Is it just me or is Swinson hitting of late? If he can add offense to his already plus D, arm and speed that would give him a chance. Never been a Swinson fan as I never thought he would hit enough to make it but his recent offensive output has me intrigued

    • Hugecardsfan says:

But you’re right. He can D.

    • CRay says:

I saw Swinson in one game last year. Must have been a good night for him since I came away very impressed. Looked at this season stats for him yesterday and was disappointed. But you described it perfectly, JC. He is excellent in all aspects of the game with questions about his offense. Still, he definitely intrigues me, though I think we all would peg him as a long shot.

    • bc says:

Swinson has a .346wOBAr, wOBA+ of 106 and a 14% BB rate. I hear he’s got plus D in CF and speed (though apparently, he can’t steal bases without getting caught). He’s even age-appropriate, so certainly someone to keep an eye on.

  7. PJ says:

And good grief…..is it time to push Tavares up a level? Or at least time to find him a nickname?

    • arknepp says:

Maybe he will turn into an ultra-surly post-game interviewee and we will have the pleasure of calling him Oscar the Grouch.

      Oscar Wild

Hammerstein is very fitting, considering “stein” means stone (Oscar Hammerstein was 1/2 of Rogers & Hammerstein)

  8. pitch and hit says:

For anyone’s information, Cox missed a very easy play ( I don’t know if he touched the ball), that extended the inning when Rondon’s outing should have been done and runs scored. It was like he was caught sleeping. Last time this happened, the next day error was charged against Cox and the runs ruled unearned.
This is the second time in 2 weeks this has happened.
If you ask people at the park what happened, they might say that it was Cox that blew the play. Stuff happens for sure, but give credit or don’t where it’s due or not do.
I think Cox has come a long way, he’s a good kid, but I don’t see him remaining a cardinal forever.

Agree 100% that power (HR) at Springfield depends on where the wind is blowing that night. I am not sure how you can justify many of those that leave the park on windy nights.

  9. pitch and hit says:

Don’t get me wrong, I really like Cox, he brings a alot to the organization, I am just not sure what position is best for him and I am not sure they are either.

  10. Cards Fan in Chitown #2 says:

A couple of DOSL guys we should all keep an eye on are Amaury Capellan (18 yr old CF/RF) and Robelys Reyes (20 yr old 2B). They are both tearing up the DOSL, Reyes is obviously a little old for that level, so hopefully he gets moved up to at least the GCL sometime this summer. Capellan on the other hand I’m very excited about and is the right age and is showing a lot of power. 5 HR, 26 RBI, OBP of .432 in 120 PA. Would love to see him come to the states by the end of the summer also to get the “adjustment” period out of the way so he can hit the ground running next year.

Does anyone have any recollection of when we signed these guys and for how much??

  11. Andrew says:

Cappellan was signed the year before Martinez I believe, last year he had a poor year that started off with him not playing for a bit because of back issues. He was paid about 600k the most the Cardinals paid a LA player that year. Luhnow and Vuch were really high on him and he was supposed to be the best player from our class that year.

  12. pitch and hit says:

Zawacki was released yesterday due to the addition of Samuel.
Can someone shed some light on why this player still remains on the 40 man roster?
    Has his injuries been serious?
Also does anyone know who needs protection this year, even is in your own opinions?

    • Mizzcards says:

      What???

      • Indiana Cardinal says:

I think P&H is asking who needs to be protected from the Rule 5 draft by being added to the 40 man roster. I had the same question if anyone keeps track of that.

        • Mizzcards says:

That’s a good question. I think Additon needs to be added this year.

          • cariocacardinal says:

Do you really think they will protect Additon? Would someone take him if left unprotected? Would the organization care?

I’d say the only players with a real chance of getting protected are:

            Luna
            Ottavino
            Pham (depending on his injury)

A long shot would be an infielder such as Garcia or Solano

I just don’t see anyone else at this point (someone like Kopp could get hot before the end of the season though).

            • Indiana Cardinal says:

Isn’t Additon a lefthanded version of Broderick, i.e. might get selected if not protected but very unlikely to be carried all season by the selecting team and then offered back to the Cards. However if they thought he could be a LOOGY then maybe he is worth protecting.

CC are the above players “have to protect or become available to lose in the Rule 5 (obviously Ottavino is and similarly Solano and Pham were eligible to be selected last off season)?

            • pitch and hit says:

I think that you are right, I don’t see them protecting Additon.
Maybe Kopp depending on what they wanted to do with him.

Might also depend how nuch room they have.
