The farm went 2-4 on the night, as Shelby Miller made a start.  Check out how he did below!

Oklahoma City 8, Memphis 2

  • Adron Chambers led off and hit 2-5 with a stolen base
  • Andrew Brown hit a 2-run homer in the first and finished 2-4
  • Nick Stavinoha went 2-3 with a walk in the 3rd spot
  • Tyler Greene was 1-3 with walk. He continues to post solid power numbers and a good walk rate in Memphis.
  • Bryan Anderson had 2 singles in 4 at-bats
  • Donovan Solano hit a pinch-hit double
  • Maikel Cleto was exceptionally wild, as he walked 6 batters in 4 innings. He gave up 6 runs (5 earned) off of the walks and 5 hits

Northwest Arkansas 5, Springfield 4

  • The only way Matt Adams doesn’t hit a home run is if Matt Adams doesn’t play.
  • Alex Castellanos hit cleanup and went 2-4 with a triple and home run
  • Ryan Jackson was 1-4
  • Charles Cutler hit 2-3 with a walk
  • Jermaine Curtis had a double and single in 4 at-bats
  • Zack Cox went hitless in 4 at-bats
  • Shelby Miller had a mediocre night after giving up 4 runs (3 earned) in 6 innings. He gave up 9 hits (only 1 extra-base hit), 2 walks, and struck out 6. He also threw a wild pitch and hit a batter
  • Francisco Samuel gave up a run off of 2 hits and 0(!) walks in an inning of work
  • Sam Freeman pitched a scoreless inning out of the pen

Lakeland 1, Palm Beach 0

  • Pretty weak day for the offense, as no Palm Beach hitter recorded an extra-base hit, and the only player to get more than 1 hit was Adam Melker, who finished 2-3.
  • Greg Garcia went 1-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch
  • Niko Vasquez had a hat trick in strikeouts and finished 0-4
  • Eric Fornataro gave up just 1 run off of 7 hits (all singles) and 2 walks. He struck out 3 and hit a batter.
  • Justin Wright struck out 1 in just over a scoreless inning of work. He’s struck out 56 batters over 38.1 innings between Quad Cities and Palm Beach and has walked just 11 batters.

Quad Cities 11, Fort Wayne 10

Aberdeen 4, Batavia 0

Johnson City 8, Greeneville 2

  • Roberto De La Cruz continues to flash the power that scouts said he was capable of after he went 2-4 with a 3-run homer and hit a double. His slugging percentage in his last 10 games is above .850, as he’s recorded 10 extra-base hits in that span. He’s striking out a less than stellar clip and not walking enough, but he’s shown improvement in each area.
  • Gary Apelian had 2 out of the 6 doubles that Johnson City had on the night. He finished 2-4 with 3 RBI
  • Steven Ramos led off and went 2-4 with a double and triple. He’s walked just 1 time in 131 at-bats but is showing good speed and a high average.
  • The theme was 2-4, as Matt Williams did just that and got a double
  • David Washington also went 2-4
  • Tyler Rahmatulla (am I the only one who sees tarantula?) had a double as his sole hit
  • Eduardo Hiraldo struck out 6 and gave up 2 runs on 7 hits and 0 walks in 5.2 innings. He threw 2 wild pitches and hit a batter

    Holy formatting, Batman

    • Pierce says:

Yeah, that’s my fault. Homestands on weekends + no days off makes Pierce a….well, you know. I posted that and didn’t really get a chance to look it over last night.

Still no updates on Matt Adams status i take it? This time of year when guys get pulled at odd times in game and are held out of the next game with no clear injury it raises red flags warranted or not. Also Jon Morosi threw his name out there for what the O’s might want for Jeremy Guthrie.

    • Felonius_Monk says:

I think Adams is a bit of an overpay for Guthrie. Guthrie’s maybe about an average pitcher, which is an upgrade over McClellan, but not a particularly huge one given he only makes maybe another 8 or 9 starts tops. He’s not really an upgrade in the post-season as I don’t see him as particularly that much better than Lohse or Westbrook. I think he has one year of team control left but he gets $7-9m or so in arbitration which is really pretty much only what he’s worth, and there’s a definite opportunity cost there is we end up with Guthrie for $8m when we could’ve had Carpenter for maybe $12m.

Overall, Guthrie’s a minor upgrade (maybe 1 more win to our end-of-year standings, tops, on average) but I don’t think he’s a great fit for us. If anything, I’d rather have a right-handed MIF who can play SS (Carroll/Barmes) to replace Theriot.

K-Mac is better than an average pitcher. K-Mac is averaging more than 6 IP with a 4.15 ERA. A lot of teams would take that from their #4 starter. Not to mention K-Mac is very cheap.

        • Felonius_Monk says:

Sorry, but I have to pick you up on this: K-Mac is not better than an average starting pitcher in this or any other universe.

His ERA is 4.15 but his ERA+ (which is just ERA compared to league-average) is 87 (100 being average), ergo his ERA is 13% worse than league average. His FIP, xFIP, SIERRA and tERA (all of which are attempts to be defense-independent pitching stats) are all worse than his ERA, so he’s probably getting a bit lucky on the balls people are putting in play off him. His K rate is massively below average. His WHIP is below average. His HR rate is higher than the average pitcher, in a park that suppresses HR. About the only thing he has at an average level is his walkrate.

He’s done fine as far as 5th starters go, but he’s also one of the two easiest spots on this team to upgrade, along with Ryan Theriot (and arguably the left-hand side of the bullpen), and is pretty clearly a very mediocre starter.

He was pulled 2 nights ago with dehydration issues (cramping). Was kept out of the lineup last night as a precaution. I believe, just a night off.

Jeff Lunhow tweeted that De la Cruz’s dinger was a moonshot, to which he got this reply from the stadium operations directer at JC “@jluhnow They need to put the distances back on the wall but be sure to let people know that the wall is about 30 ft high and 430 ft away.”

  4. Andrew says:

I said in another thread…..the announcers reported that he left yesterday with dehydrattion and that he was sick last night, better by the game today but they dind’t want to risk it.

  5. Andrew says:

I really doubt Adams is traded unless/until Pujols is extended.

  6. Lou Schuler says:

    Very minor news:

Amaury Capellan is really locked in down in the DSL. He was 4-4 yesterday with a double, and threw out at a runner at home from center field. For the season he’s hitting .336/.458/.551, with 23 BB and just 19 K in 32 games.

He was also a DSL all-star this year, along w. Robelys Reyes (the 21-year-old 2nd baseman) and a pitcher (can’t think of the name).

If he moves up to JC next season as a 19-year-old, then he’s on the same track as Anthony Garcia, and probably playing alongside Charlie Tilson (assuming he signs at the deadline in August).

Nice to see another OF prospect coming along.

    • Felonius_Monk says:

Thanks for the update. Hard to read much into DSL stats, really, but he sounds like an exciting guy to watch. Let’s hope Tilson signs – I heard (on here I think) that he was looking for $1m+, which is quite a lot for a round 2 guy but I think it’s probably worth it. I’m not totally sold on him but in a pretty disappointing draft overall it’d be nice to get one of the few guys with the upside to be an everyday major leaguer.

      • JC says:

Its not uncommon for players in the 2nd Rd to get over $1M to sign…especially high school guys. From everything I can find it will take $1.2-1.5M to get the deal done…the Cards probably knew this going into the pick and going with a close to slot 1st Rd pick makes it very doable to get this deal done. I would be quite surprised if he didn’t sign.

        • Vision says:

He has asked for $1.1 million. From a person who knows his family, that was his number on draft day, and it hasn’t changed.

St. Louis has come to see him play a few times, and are still deciding on what their offer will be. Haven’t made one yet.

    • TomBruno23 says:

Yes, this guy is young, is showing major improvements over last year and is 5th in the league in OBP and SLG. Seems like one to watch.

    • Indiana Cardinal says:

Does anyone have a read on what OF position Tilson will play (if signed)?

  7. steve says:

Watching for Adams updates reminds me of checking Memphis box scores every day a few years back to see if Ankiel went yard again.

  8. JC says:

Not sure if anyone caught this about Victor Sanchez but he apparently have been working hard on shortning his swing. The results have shown his hard work is paying off. In my writeup over at Redbird Dugout after QC played at Busch in late May I identified Sanchez as having a long swing and would never have success unless he worked on it. I am sure others who have seen him this year would agree. I would be curious to know if anyone watches QC often and has noticed a big difference? This article from a week ago talks about Sanchez and his swing.

  9. pitch and hit says:

Blaine Boyer up to AAA, Additon down AA, Calhoun down to high A.

Additon has really worked hard hate to see him get demoted.

  10. pitch and hit says:

Addition missed a start didn’t he? Perhaps they just needed to cut down on his work load.

  11. pitch and hit says:

    meant Additon….
