The farm went a perfect 4-0, while Carlos Martinez got the start for Palm Beach. Am I the only one who likes that Miller and Martinez start on consecutive days? Both of them starting on the same day felt like top prospect overload.

Memphis 10, Round Rock 4

  • Allen Craig continued his rehab and went 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI
  • Nick Stavinoha had 6 RBI on the night after going 3-4 with a 3-run homer
  • Matt Carpenter and Aaron Luna both went 2-5, all singles
  • Bryan Anderson also went 2-5 but added a double
  • Shane Robinson led off and stole 2 bases
  • Tyler Greene went 2-4 with a double, walk, and stole his 9th base. I honestly think the Cardinals need to let him know he’s the starter in St. Louis and leave him there for a month.
  • Andrew Brown had a hat trick in strikeouts and was the only Memphis batter to go hitless
  • Donovan Solano hit 9th and went 3-5 with 2 doubles
  • Brian Broderick got the start and had a line of 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, and 2 K

Springfield 7, Arkansas 5

  • I reiterate something that I said yesterday. The only way Matt Adams doesn’t hit a home run is if Matt Adams doesn’t play. He did play tonight and hit his 24th home run on the year and finished 2-4, which was his 3rd in his last 4 games played.
  • Ryan Jackson went 0-3 with a walk
  • Zack Cox went 2-4 with 1 RBI
  • Alex Castellanos had 2 doubles and went 3-4
  • Charles Cutler was 1-3 with a double and walk
  • The defense recorded 4 double plays
  • Joe Kelly was very wild tonight, as he gave up 4 walks, threw a wild pitch, and hit a batter. He gave up 8 hits, 5 runs, and struck out 5 over 5 innings. The good news is that he gave up just 1 extra-base hit out of the 8 hits and all 4 outs that reached the field were groundballs.
  • Nick Greenwood, Jorge Rondon, and David Kopp combined to pitch 4 shutout innings

Palm Beach 10, Lakeland 3

  • Palm Beach hit 5 home runs on the night, and Kyle Conley led it off with a 2-run shot in the 1st and finished 2-5 on the night
  • Xavier Scruggs also hit a homer in the first and walked an impressive 3 times in the game
  • Rainel Rosario stood out with 2 homers on the night
  • Domnit Bolivar was the only Cardinals batter to go hitless on the night and had a golden sombrero to boot. Ouch!
  • Starlin Rodriguez led off the game and hit a 3-run shot in the 8th
  • Niko Vasquez had 2 singles in 4 at-bats and was caught stealing
  • Robert Stock went 1-3 with a double and 2 walks. He hasn’t dominated since being promoted from Quad Cities, but he’s posted respectable numbers and has cut his K% nearly in half since last season
  • Alan Ahmady walked twice and had a single
  • Ted Obregon had 2 singles and a walk in the 9th spot and stole his 7th base
  • Carlos Martinez had a very effective, yet slightly wild night as he threw a wild pitch, hit a batter, and walked 3 in 6 innings pitched. He gave up just 1 run, 2 hits, and had a GO:FO ratio of 7:3, so Lakeland wasn’t able to do much when they got the chance to put the ball in play.
  • Jordan Swagerty struck out the side and gave up 1 hit and a walk in a scoreless inning of work. Swagerty has recently got some pub from ESPN’s Keith Law, who sees potential in him as a starter. The Cardinals have moved him to the bullpen to limit his innings this year, but expect him to be back in the rotation next year.

6K’s for Martinez tonight. Can’t do without those K’s.

Greene has really been hitting in Memphis and it would be nice to see him get some extended time, but I still think the Cardinals think that Theriot is the second coming of Eckstein, so no way Greeney gets a shot during a pennant race.

    • zuke354 says:

Actually, its descalso that is hurting his chances. Its hard to say the cards have that much faith in Theriot when Descalso has started 3 of the last 6 games at SS.

Descalso has done well with the opportunites he has received. Can’t say the same for Greene.

  2. JBCardsFan says:

I remain convinced that Mo and Vuch are keeping Adams at Springfield to showcase him for possible trades. Only way it makes sense in the slightest to keep Adams at AA.

Sad because Adams could have really had a chance to make an impression at AAA this year and gotten a September call-up. I think you’ll see Adams moved to AAA immediately following the trade deadline though.

    MEM PCL 5 1 2.38 39 1 53.0 35 17 14 2 25 50 2.75 .188

Name that reliever? Why hasnt this guy gotten more love?

    • pitch and hit says:

Chuck Fick..september call up hopefully, he deserves it.

    • Felonius_Monk says:

“Why hasnt this guy gotten more love?”

Because he’s been mediocre throughout his minor league career, is nearly 26 years old, doesn’t have wipeout stuff, and is walking far too many this year to be a likely productive reliever at the major league level. Only guys like Carlos Marmol can survive with a walkrate much over 4 per 9.

He’s also been pretty lucky on flyballs this year to have such a low HR rate. Normalise that to some extent and his line is fairly mediocre in AAA.

The only argument for calling him up ahead of guys like Dickson, Ottavino and even Walters is because it would make Azru mad :-).

  4. hugecardsfan says:

…and I don’ t think Adams is showcasing for anybody. He jumped 2 levels from last year and he probably isn’t going anywhere until next year. But, it changes very little if he does get promoted to Memphis in a few weeks.

  5. Felonius_Monk says:

I think Greene may get an extended chance in the majors but sadly I suspect it may be with another team. That said, I can’t see any way they retain Theriot next year given how awful he’s been for the last two years (and the fact he’ll cost ~$5m), so I suppose he may get more of look then. I just get the feeling he’s not a well-liked player among the guys whose opinion counts (esp. TLR). A Green/Descalso semi-platoon (with Greene starting against some righties) works well for me at SS, with Craig and Punto more or less splitting time at 2B.

On that last subject, if Craig is healthy enough to be playing full-time and hitting in Memphis, I think his rehab is done – we need his bat in the major league lineup some get him up there now.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

So who do you send down to make room for Craig? Because the roster won’t expand to 26 men just to accommodate him. Send down Cruz (the most likely candidate), and you lose the positional flexibility that TLR prizes, not to mention a guy who’s been doing surprisingly well in the bigs. Certainly not Descalso, who’s doing the same and throwing in excellent defense in the bargain. Rasmus … nah. (He does have an option left, correct? But it’s not going to get used.) And TLR would pitch a fit (so to speak) if they made him short his bullpen for the sake of another spare 4-corners guy.

I don’t think we’ll see Craig come up until the last possible minute, maybe in connection with a move of Berkman to the DL.

      • Felonius_Monk says:

Cruz. Really can’t see carrying 3 catchers (???) on the major league roster before rosters expand. I don’t think “positional flexibility” matters at 3B when we have two guys (Freese, Dirty Dan) who can play 3B well and two guys who might be able to fill in in an emergency (Craig, Punto if his arm is up to it). Cruz’s bat isn’t worth carrying just as a RH pitch hitter.

I’d say he’s a perfect candidate to move aside in favour of Craig, in fact, because we’re not losing anything (don’t need 3 catchers, Craig is probably as good at 3B, and he’s a better right-handed hitter).

      • zuke354 says:

        Cruz. Freese is back.

      • mattybobo says:

Cruz has had a nice cup of coffee, but it would be silly to hold a healthy Allen Craig down in Memphis in order to keep Cruz in St. Louis.

        • Cards Fan in Chitown #2 says:

Cruz has impressed me, and I would assume rather than wasting 1M on a Laird type, he’ll be the backup next year. His bat is much better than Laird and if it wasn’t for Lairds contract I’d rather have Cruz on the 25 man.

          • zuke354 says:

Not me. I have been impressed with Cruz as well. Which is why he needs to be catching in memphis next year, not sitting the bench up here.

Young guys with potential are not best used as back ups.

  6. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

I don’t see how you could trade Adams until you have Pujols signed, nor do I see how you can leave him at AA if you do not have Pujols signed. Don’t you want to see what he is going to do at AAA this year just in case? The Cardinals have been aggressive with promotions before so I don’t know that a 2 level jump should be a major factor in seeing what this guy can do at the next level. You need to look at all of your options in case the unthinkable happens.

    • GTL says:

The way I see it they leave him at Springfield for the rest of the year. He’s obviously got the league figured out, and should continue to mash. During the offseason, if we fail to sign Pujols, Adams becomes our primary 1B prospect, starting the year at Memphis and perhaps getting called up during the season. If we sign Pujols, we make it a priority to trade Adams during the offseason, as I believe his value will never be higher (at least while he’s with the Cardinals in the minor leagues). Obviously a good destination would be an AL club looking for a powerful young DH. Either we package him with others as part of a large trade, or we swap him for a MIF prospect or perhaps young RP of similar value.

I think that by moving him to Memphis now we’re taking the risk that he struggles (even if he doesn’t it’s very unlikely he continues his current output) thereby hurting his trade value over the offseason.

  7. Jim H says:

Just wondering what the opinion of Ryan Jackson is here. Is he a real major league prospect? If not do we have one besides Greene who it seems may or may not be one.

I see SS as a huge concern for the Cards going forward. If Jackson isn’t a bonafide prospect, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Cards give up some of their top flight pitching prospects say Martinez if it would get it done for someone like Machado or Profar. Baltimore just signed Hardy and Profar is very young but he has Andrus in front of him. Another that could be a possibility is Franklin from Seattle if they really like Brendan.

It seems there are quite a few guys who post here who have a good grasp of the minor leagues and I’d love to hear some opinions on filling the SS position in the future. Thank You

    • Wade says:

      (1) flameout rate is higher on Ps, (2) teams don’t trade prospects for prospects. Free Agent (not Theriot) or developing Greene/Jackson is the way we need to look.

  8. Mark G. says:

So Toronto traded for Edwin Jackson, now they want to flip him and prospects for Rasmus. Does Toronto have a good farm system?

  9. Mark G. says:

Or, we might just get bullpen pieces…

  10. Rich says:

@felenios have you seen him pitch? 6 of his 25 walks are intentional and with a GO/AO like that I’m sure the fly balls he is getting as outs are pop ups. For almost a K per inning his stuff can’t be all that bad. He has a higher K rate than Lynn, Dickson, and Walters. Reports have been he’s 88-92 with good sink and a good slider. How is that not good enough? He’s also played all Of this year at 25. And spent half of last year at 24 in the PCL.

  11. Going Yard says:

Marte and Fick have been really good for the Memphis Mafia, Fick is a sinkerball pitcher 90-93, that’s why he has only giving up two jacks in 53 innings, he has late movement, tough to square up. 6 of Fick’s walks have been IBB. Marte is more of a power pitcher 90-95 with a very good slider, both guys throw strikes and know how to pitch. Trade em to someone.

  12. I would much rather see Cecil,Stewart or Drabek in a deal with Toronto, than Jackson. If the Cards have to take on Jackson’s salary,I hope we get alot more for Rasmus. I think there are much better trade partners [Atlanta or Tampa].I don’t mind trading young talent, but would like to see a much better return than Ludwick last year.

    http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/article_0f7b1b4c-b86e-11e0-86d2-0019bb30f31a.html

I believe this is the most disappointed I have been in the Cardinals Management in a long time. As we have seen in the past, if TLR doesn’t like the player then management is more than happy to send the player away with no regard to the upside that player presents. With this in mind, I am extremely disappointed with the return they are receiving for an above-average talent like Rasmus. It seem that I am constantly reminded that I must not let myself get invested in prospects because even if they make the major league roster this is still a high probability that they have not passed TLR’s test yet. (It saddens me to find out that they were discussing an extension with Rasmus prior to TLR complaining about him earlier this month).

  14. Armitage_Card says:

How in the world do we get such a minimal return for Rasmus? I always liked TLR and still believe he is better manager than 90% of the league. But he needs a strong-willed GM in charge of him. Otherwise, you get this. Just like every other player he has fallen out of love with, we get minimal return after he trashes the guy in the media. Nice Job Mo…wait to let someone else dictate how to do your job. Morons. Not a single prospect. Outside of a lefty RELIEVER…we got nothing of value after this year. Those who understand value in MLB are going to kill them for this deal. I fully welcome Keith Law’s analysis on this. I should never feel like I can do a better job at running the cardinals than those who run the team. Right now I feel like I can do a better job than the highly paid management. Awful.

  15. The DL says:

“ESPN’s Buster Olney tweets that the Rays offered one of Jeff Niemann, Wade Davis, and Alex Cobb, and the young center fielder is very much available.”
If this is true, then we got a terrible deal.

  16. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

Is Rasmus really not worth more than this steaming pile of mediocrity?

    • Hugecardsfan says:

3 serviceable pitchers for Colby. I admit I don’t totally understand the addition of Patterson…although we finally have a player who can steal bases. 2011 Colby doesn’t seem to be a huge loss. Not sure about 2012-14 Colby.

I didn’t think we had a chance this year with our rotation and bullpen and kinda feel like we do now. Colby was something of a distraction so it will be interesting to see how the chemistry changes.
