It’s always exciting when one of our top arms (Miller, Martinez, Jenkins, etc.) pitches, but especially Miller and Martinez because both are arguably top 20 prospects in baseball.

  2. Paul from San Diego says:

It looks like the Cardinals may trade for Furcal. I cannot understand shy the Cardinals would want
Furcal. He has been on the disabled list for most of the last two years. He has knee, back, and leg problems. Wth these problems, he clearly is no longer the hitter or fielder he once was. The Dodgers clearly want to dump him to clear space on their toster. Why oh would the Cardinals send any prospect to the Dodgers for so limited a player.

    • Paul from San Diego says:

      excuse the topos above

    • buchek's bat says:

Anything more than a bag of balls and a 64 oz. fountain drink would be too much.

I wonder, is this all-in attitude of the organization in 2011 because this is TLR’s swan song in St Louis???

    • mizzcards says:

Because the Cards GM is a complete idiot. That’s why…

      • mizzcards says:

Looking at his stats, he has been hurt basically all year. They would actually trade for a guy that is hitting for a .183 avg in July??? Are you kidding me???

        http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/4243/rafael-furcal

        • Forsch31 says:

Small sample size coming off of injury. Shall we talk about Colby Rasmus’ two months again?

          • mizzcards says:

Looks to me like he’s been hurt quite a lot 3 out of the last 4 years. IMO he looks like a washed up player that is constantly injured. These guys are not machines that you can look at and say well in 2006 he played in 159 games and hit for a .300 avg. He should be able to do that again 5 years later. Here’s a hint he isn’t going to do it again because the guy has had tons of injuries and is not the same player he was in the past. Sure 3 years ago Franklin was great. But he’s not great now is he. He’s just out of baseball because he sucks so bad.

        • Zach says:

I would say, after last night, they traded for a guy who can play some defense. Mo wasn’t the one looking like an idiot after last night’s game…

    • GTL says:

Just curious, why would you be so against this? Furcal was worth over 4 WAR in less than 100 games last year. It’s true that he’s been hurt most of the year this season, but we all love to complain about Theriot. To me Furcal is an obvious upgrade. It won’t cost us much in terms of prospects. Ownership will have to add payroll but that doesn’t affect us (it’s not like this is a free agent signing where that money could have gone to someone else… either they add him or they don’t). I for one am completely behind this trade.

      • mizzcards says:

I’m not against the trade> I’m against sending anything that has numbers. If it was Jim Rapport I’m 100% for it. But it’s not was it? We traded a young OF that is hitting for a .323 avg with 19 hrs. That’s somone with some value. Notice they didn’t take Nick Stavinoha….

  3. Josh says:

Miller-Jeffress could be a very good matchup tonight. Jeffress could be a high octane guy still if he can stay away from drugs

  4. Richard says:

MLBTR is reporting that it’s a minor league outfielder not on the 40 man. Tavaras?

  5. Andrew says:

If it’s Taveras would flip out. Gotta be DJ or Swinson or Longmire or something. We are doing them a favor and eating 4 million for a question mark the least they can do is just take someone we don’t want.

  6. Indiana Cardinal says:

My guess it is Alex Castellanos. Of the possibilities he is the one that did not play tonight.

    • mizzcards says:

Don’t you think that would be a bit much????

    • pitch and hit says:

Castellanos is hurt. That’s why he didn’t play.

I hope that it’s someone who now has a legit shot to play on the ML field and not sit and wait forever, that’s all that these guys want to do and it doesn’t matter who they do it for.

      • Andrew says:

Wonder if any of or AAA outfielders have a legit shot to play elsewhere? Brown has a gun and can hit, he’s just a butcher in the OF. Maybe Robinson can be a 4th OF somewhere.

        • mizzcards says:

As long as TLR aka (POS) is around he will make is difficult for young players to break into the ML’s in STL with his poor management of their playing time and playing them out of position. Just like today’s line up. He had a guy playing SS that played 2B all the way up through the minors. He has taken T Greene who 99% of the time played SS in the minors and has tried to make him play the OF, 3B, and 2B. I told my dad just before D Descalso made the error in the first inning Sat that he was out of position. That DD should be playing 2B with T Greene at SS. Also playing a guy 1 game and then not playing him again for 5 games just isn’t going to work with young players trying to adjust to the ML game & pitching. This is apparent when you see guys go back down to AAA and light the league up hitting for a plus .330 -.350 avg then return to STL and sit the bench. TLR needs to go and I hope this is his last year in STL.

  7. Gruntosaurus says:

Lots of other possibilities. Rapoport? Castellanos? Luna? All would qualify as “second-tier,” and none would really be missed, although I confess some hope that Castellanos might be useful some day.

  8. Andrew says:

Daryl Jones wouldbe idea for this trade. Upside but not reaching it here give him a fresh start.

    • jjray says:

      D. Jones makes the most sense for both parties. Former top prospect who the Dodgers can point to and say to their fans that got something in return. For the Cards, no loss. They’ve already turned the page on D. Jones. Removed from 40 man roster and demoted to AA. Who knows, the change in organization might actually give DJ a jolt allowing him to finally click as a player.

  9. Jimmy Dugan says:

Jose Leon and Terry Evans are the players we traded for Will Clark and Jeff Weaver. Which is exactly the type of player that we will give up for Furcal. Thats how these things work. The other team rids itself of some salary n gets a little something to show for it so it doesnt seem like a total salary dump. Maybe we catch lightning in a bottle maybe we dont but there is NO risk in this trade. No need to hyperventilate that we are going to give up anything thats actually worth a damn. Apologies to whomever I said isnt worth a damn, not personal just business.

  10. Indiana Cardinal says:

In addition to trading a player not on the 40 man roster, they will also have to remove someone from the 40 man roster, with the possible risk of also losing that player. I guess they could move someone to the 60 day DL list (Sanchez??).

  11. Jim H says:

I don’t mind this depending on who we give up. Furcal has been hitting the last week or so. Anything to insure Theriot doesn’t play ss can’t be all bad. Against lefties it’s Furcall / Theriot / Freese and against righties Descalso should play every day at one of the 3 infield positions. Skip is now a 4th OF. If we’d get a normal rotation of the 4, I’d be happy with it.

  12. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

As long as it is not Taveras I will not be too upset.

Interesting rumor in Chicago Trib, writer suggests that White Sox did not trade directly for Rasmus because TLR does not like him and is going to manage the White Sox next season. I don’t know what TLR’s contract is and this seems a bit far fetched to me but interesting never the less.

    • Stanley1 says:

      That is unlikely, I’d think.

The thing that might make it more likely is if the WS somehow signed Albert this offseason.

  13. Zach says:

    It’s Castellanos

    • Wade says:

yep … too much for furcal in my opinion. not that he’s grade A

      • Zach says:

i don’t have any problem with it – castellanos is having a good year but we have brown, luna, chambers, ect in front and he’s almost 25

      • Brian B says:

I agree. Castellanos was a great asset to the Cardinals, they should of given up someone else. Oh well. The trade is not over yet we might lose other great players there looking at Berard

        • Forsch31 says:

I disagree. Catellanos was an interesting prospect, but he wasn’t a top 20 guy. Also, the trade is over.

        • John I says:

Is Castellanos Rule 5 eligible after this or next season? He Ks once a game, this has been his first above average season, doesn’t play enough D to stay in CF, and is old for the league who isn’t making the Bigs until he is 26, if he gets there.

If Furcal can stay healthy (big if) and play like he is capable of, he can truly make a difference in the division race and playoffs for the Cards. I like this move, helps the team this year and doesn’t affect them for next.

  14. Brian B says:

Wow they gave us Castellanos not happy. I love that kid as much as Taveras. He is a toolsy player with great power. I wish that kid great success. Very sad day

    • GTL says:

He’s 24 and in AA. Taveras is 19 and practically hitting .400. Castellanos is not in Taveras’ league, and will probably never be more than a 4th OF.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

If you love that kid as much as Taveras, your standards for love are … odd. Six years older and only two rungs higher, and not dominating the league on nearly the same level as Taveras is. A guy who turns 25 next month and has never played above AA does not excite me.

He has a chance to reach the Show, though, and I wish him well, even though he’s not going to be a star. I would assess this deal as “balanced,” with neither side clearly winning and neither side clearly getting fleeced — as long as Furcal isn’t damaged goods.

      • Forsch31 says:

Plus, the Cardinals received cash in the deal. So, they essentially got paid for a C level prospect, if Furcal turns out to be nothing.

        • Gruntosaurus says:

Not really. Furcal’s contract is guaranteed. The Cardinals will pay what remains on it for 2011, minus the part that the Dodgers pay for by sending “cash”in the deal. If Furcal is completely unable to perform, he still costs the Cardinals over $2M out of pocket. That’s not disastrous to the team’s financial situation, but it’s still not getting paid for Castellanos.

  15. Mike G says:

Sorry also to see Catellanos go, but obviously someone had to go to get Furcal, a gamble well worth taking, given the horrible infield defense. You have to give up something to get something. You can’t horde every prospect and semi-prospect; some are assets to be converted into assets more valuable to the major-league club. Catellanos has an interesting combination of power and speed, but I suspect his power output has been enhanced by the Springfield park, and he is nearly 26 and still in Double A. He has never been regarded as a top prospect. I was also sorry to lose Terry Evans, the comparable outfielder traded for Jeff Weaver in 2006, but that move helped the Cardinals win the World Series and Evans has never been able to stick in the majors despite his tools.

  16. bc says:

I’m fine with giving up Castellanos. His wOBAr was .344 this year, which is below Ryan Jackson’s, Zack Cox’s, and others like Eric Duncan’s.

I wish him great success in the Dodgers organization, but IMO, we gave up a C prospect and I’m fine with that.

  17. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

Castellanos benefited from playing in a good hitters park this year. He has some power but strikes out too much.

Although it is kind of amusing listening to the ESPN crew say the Cardinals are in a win now mode. Hunter Pence is a win now move. Players like Furcal are just rolls of the dice and that is why we just had to give up a C prospect for him.

  18. cariocacardinal says:

In my opinion Castellanos is less of a prospect than David Carpenter who we gave up for Pedro Feliz last year (and Feliz was terrible!!!!). Castellanos may have a little more upside but that 25%+ K rate would seem hard for him to overcome.

    • mizzcards says:

Totally to much… a 10th round pick just 3 years ago???

      • Forsch31 says:

Where a player is picked should have little with his value today as a prospect. Especially since a 10th round pick (305th overall) really has no value by itself whatsoever.

  19. Blaise says:

Love the deal. Furcal, even at 85%, would do fantastic for the Cards both at SS and at leadoff. Dude knows how to play if body lets him. Castellanos will not be missed or barely remembered. We have 7 to 10 players in the minors that could fill his shoes or do even better.

  20. Going Yard says:

How much money did it cost to acquire Furcal?
