Thanks to AZ for covering for the coverer during my airplane nightmare yesterday (never fly US Air – that’s my recommendation), but at last I’m home, but luggage-less to cover tonight’s DFR. What’s up, people?
Let’s party rock the DFR tonight.
- Adron Chambers was 2-5 with a double.
- Brian Broderick the hitter went 2-3.
- Everyone else that had a hit just had one single each.
- Brian Broderick the pitcher went 7 shutout innings, scattering 4 hits, striking out 3 and walking 3.
- Cory Rauschenberger and Ron Mahay finished off the game.
- Jose Garcia had a solo HR, accounting for the only runs.
- Ryan Jackson had two hits, including a double.
- Audry Perez also had a double as his only hit.
- Joe Kelly got the start and gave up 6 hits in 6 innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned). But he did strike out 5 and walk just 2.
- Jeff Lyman, Jorge Rondon and Nick Greenwood finished up the game. Lyman gave up 4 runs, Rondon 1 and Greenwood none.
- Domnit Bolivar of all people had a solo HR.
- Greg Garcia was 3-4 including a double.
- Robert Stock was 2-4 with two singles.
- Eric Fornataro took the loss, pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits.
- Justin Smith pitched .2 shutout innings.
- Justin Wright LOOGIED .1 shutout innings.
- Jordan Swagerty struck out the side to finish things off for the pitching portion of the game.
- Kolten Wong provided the power, with a solo HR.
- Chris Edmondson did him one better with a 2 run HR in a 3-4 night.
- Oscar Taveras had 2 hits.
- Packy Elkins had the final hit as there were no hits from anyone else.
- Boone Whiting continued to beguile hitters and I’m sure AZ will have a full report on this game. 7 innings, 6 hits only run allowed on a solo shot. He struck out 7 and walked 2.
- Dean Kiekhefer poached the win with two shutout innings.
- Not a lot of good here, I’ll try to highlight some good stuff.
- Joseph Bergman had a solo HR.
- Virgil Hill had two hits, but he got caught stealing and picked off the two times he was on base.
- Travis Miller pitched two no-hit innings, but far after the game was already decided.
Johnson City 10, Elizabethton 5
- Roberto De La Cruz had two home runs.
- Gary Apelian had 3 hits in 6 Abs with 1 double.
- Tyler Rahmatulla was 3-4 with a double.
- Matthew Williams also doubled.
- Kyle Hald started and gave up 5 runs in 4 innings.
- Ryan Sherriff piggy-backed with more success, only 1 run in 4 innings.
- Logan Billbrough pitched the final two shutout innings for the win. He struck out 5 of the 6 outs he got.

I’m looking forward greatly to the report on Whiting, AZ.
I note that Matt Adams is in a mini-slump, only 2 for his last 18 with no HRs. Not a large sample size, for sure, but is something going on there?
Adams looked plenty good Saturday night. The double that he hit was a rocket, almost took the centerfield fence down with it.
Nothing wrong Kary Boohner just wrote a story on the game that Miller pitched that included that Adams recognized he was in a slump and got some extra hitting work in with the hitting coach before the game.
boone whiting continuing to dominate..hey may not have the most dominating stuff but he sure knows how to pitch
solid start from joe kelly too..rebounded well after the first 2 innings
Roberto De La Cruz is going yard once every 12.3 ABs, extremely impressive clip for being 19
De La Cruz is showing signs of life, although he is in his third year of rookie ball and will be 20 in November.
Proof that Matt Adams is in a slump is that the fence did not actually fall down when his ball hit it.
I am also very interested to see what AZ has to say about Whiting (AKA the junior destroyer), although I will hold out hope that he is actually better than Mr. Todd.
Has anyone seen OF Gary Apelian with Johnson City? How is he in the OF, fielding wise?
Had the same question. His bio says he is 6″4″ 205lbs which means he could fill out a bit and produce even more power. He’s listed as a 1B but I believe has played almost strictly OF.
De la Cruz really has been hitting lately but he’s been DH’ing for the most part. They may be giving up on him as a third baseman. If so I hope they’ll start playing him at 1b or outfield soon.
I have to keep reminding myself that Rahmatulla is a college player playing in the Appy League. As I remember BA implied that he was available later in the draft only because he’d had injuries.
Swaggerty rocks whether he’s a starter or reliever.
I’m also looking forward to the report on Whiting.
Cox, Tavarez, Wong, Adams (any order) are obviously the top 4 hitters in the system. Who are the guys that make up the next tier of hitting prospects? Is there anyone that prevents it from being a huge drop off?
