The farm went 3-3 on a night when Allen Craig began his rehab assignment at AAA and Matt Adams continues to mash in AA. On to the prospect (and non-prospect) goodness.
Archive for July, 2011The farm went 2-4 on the night. Trevor Rosenthal pitched his team to a victory and the Redbirds face Jake Odorizzi again, this time with less success. Of all the Jeff Luhnow era drafts, the one I reacted the most negatively towards was the 2007 draft led by Pete Kozma and Clayton Mortensen. I came around on Mortensen and still wonder a bit if he couldn’t turn into a useful reliever or back end starter some day but the Pete Kozma pick at #1 will forever rankle. One of the few giddy moments from that draft was the 4th round selection: Kyle Russell. Whatever happened to that guy? Top 20 prospects start for Quad Cities and Johnson City tonight. Not much in the way of victories on the farm tonight. On to the DFR! The Gulf Coast League is a loosely knit group of teams that play in Florida in what amounts to basically a scrimmage-like atmosphere. We do not even cover the league in the DFRs, but that does not mean we should ignore it completely, especially with a glut of recent draftees making their debuts down there. Let’s highlight a few of the players since they have played about 20 games so far. After a disastrous first start in Springfield (4 IP, 7H, 7ER, 4 BB, 6K), Joe Kelly rebounded nicely in his second start with an 8 inning effort where he allowed 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 6. He’ll make his second home start tonight against Tulsa. If you’re planning on visiting Springfield for games, it looks like the rotation order currently sits at Shelby Miller, Joe Kelly and John Gast, which would make for a great weekend visit (Sat – Mon) at the end of this month (30th, 31st, 1st). Tonight featured the two Cardinals prized pitching prospects having just about zero control. The more polished one was able to work around and it turn in a somewhat effective outing. The other turned in a short, dreadful one that it appears to thankfully have nothing to do with any injuries. On to the DFR! With the Cardinals lingering around the area of first place in the NL Central behind the juggernaut that is the Pittsburgh Pirates and with several areas that need obvious help in the back of the rotation and the bullpen. I’m not here to talk about who the Cardinals will be bringing in, but who will be going out. Shelby Miller and Carlos Martinez get starts tonight. Also, do yourself a favor and take a glance at Ryan Copeland’s stats linked below. He’s been quietly dominant for Quad Cities through his first 3 starts after moving in from the bullpen. |
