As has been hinted for a few weeks, the Cardinals today officially signed 3rd rounder CJ McElroy and assigned him to the GCL Cardinals to start his career.

I contemplated trying to rewrite the lyrics to the Bryan Adams song in the title to satirically fit this post but that would mean I’d have to listen to Bryan Adams and . . . ya, that’s not going to happen.

In 2009, the Cardinals made a pair of massive trades shipping off 5 of their more prominent prospects in exchange for Matt Holliday and Mark DeRosa. Obviously, the Matt Holliday trade and subsequent signing has gone pretty well for the Cardinals. Equally obvious was the unfortunate, injury flop that Mark DeRosa turned out to be.

But what about the prospects the Cardinals traded away? Where are Brett Wallace, Clayton Mortensen and Shane Peterson? How about Chris Perez and Jess Todd?

The farm went just 1-5, while one of our teams was no-hit.  Also, check out the interview about C.J. McElroy earlier today and thank Chad Abernathy for taking the time to give us some valuable insight into what McElroy brings to our farm system.

C.J. McElroy was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft.  Billed as a projectable, highly athletic center fielder, C.J. was a two-sport star in both baseball and football coming out of high school.  The speedy outfielder was taken one round later than Charlie Tilson, another highly athletic center fielder, while the Cardinals try to add depth and talent to an area that has been lacking since Colby Rasmus graduated to the major leagues.

Reports have come out recently that McElroy has decided to forego his commitment to Houston to try to work out a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.  All indications are that he will be signed before the August 15th deadline and will join Zack Cox, Kolten Wong, Matt Adams, and Oscar Taveras as a resurgence in the amount of depth that the Cardinals have added in impactful position players.

Chad Abernathy, who coached C.J. in both baseball and football at Clear Creek High School, has been kind enough to answer some questions about him.

Before anything else this afternoon, I can tell that I again need to offer a commenting admonition. I’ve privately sent e-mails to a handful of people now about the tone of their posts.  We don’t have a lot of rules here; the conversation has generally increased this year and I’m happy to see additional discourse.  Unfortunately some of that discourse is becoming increasingly hostile and/or personal in nature.

That’s got to stop. This is my public admonition. If you don’t think this warning applies to you, it probably doesn’t. If you think it might apply to you, read your comments over one extra time before posting them.  After this I start stepping up the moderation which probably ends with someone getting banned.  So if you don’t like what a certain poster has to say, don’t read their comments.  There’s a huge area of subjectivity with regards to prospects, their skills and their long term projection — it’s not often that someone is definitively right or wrong.  Just be civil; ultimately, that shouldn’t be such a hard thing to do.

I’m indisposed at work today and didn’t manage to write something up in advance so here’s some quick links to tide you over.

The farm went 4-2 on the night. Quad Cities played into the 12th inning but came away with the win. In other news, solids pitching performances by Joe Kelly and Tyrell Jenkins continue to demonstrate the growing depth of pitching down on the farm.
