The twitter world was saying Shelby left the game most likely due to a blister on his pitching hand/finger.

    • Jeff says:

Yes, they said he was leaving the mound, shaking his hand. Sounds about right.

      • bosspresso says:

Miller says he just tries to flick the sweat, no injury.

        • pitch and hit says:

          Gametime was high 70′s.
          Sounds good though……

          • adam says:

i agree…i mean i have never ever sweated when the temp was high 70s

          • VolsnCards5 says:

he could still be sweating…if you are doing enough of an aerobic activity, you can sweat if it is in the 50s.

oh, and disregard the previous comment from “adam.” trying to sort something out with my mobilie vs. regular theme

            • azruavatar says:

Is pitching really an “aerobic activity”? I’d describe it as anaerobic personally. That said, it was the first inning. I don’t know why he was shaking his hand but I, too, and very skeptical of the sweat thing as I tweeted this morning.

    • Jeffery says:

After he left the game the trainer did not even go over to him in the dugout. Also when he walked back to the clubhouse he went by himself. According to Miller and Pop he was just trying to get the sweat off his arm and hand.

He had no control at all. His fastball top out at 92 according to the stadium gun. He would go to the back of the mound and shake his arm. He also would smooth out his landing spot on the mound. He just looked completely lost on the mound last night.

  2. Shanky says:

Hate to be a reactionary, but perhaps Miller and Martinez need to be shut down at this point. . .or just throw them a few innings here and there the rest of the season. Seems like both are tiring.

    • pitch and hit says:

That sounds like it could very well be they are very tired, while throwing them just a few innings, who do they have to make up for the lost innings?

Let’s just give the young prospects time off while everyone else has to work their tail end off? If they are hurt, take them out, if not, they need to work.

If this is true (too much work for them), they shouldn’t move them up unless they can handle the load at that level.

    • BigJawnMize says:

You dont shut these kids down mid season. You have two options…you provide an extra days rest between starts or you skip a start. Generally speaking you keep them pitching. Typically dead arm or tired arm conditions are the result of the nervous system being fatigued. The best thing for recovery is light work to stimulate the system without overloading it.

I personally think you start skipping a start here and there and let them do a light throwing simulated games on their normal schedule; work on mechanics; and work on stuff.

If you look around notice the uptick in scoring in the minors at this time of year. All of these young pitchers are tired.

      • Lou Schuler says:

I would also have a physical therapist check out the shoulder and forearm to see if there’s anything inhibiting nerve transmission in the throwing arm. If he’s shaking his hand, it’s probably because he’s lost feeling somewhere. The solution might be as simple as breaking up some minor adhesions in forearm muscles.

        • BigJawnMize says:

          Lou-

Not talking specifically about Shelby’s specific issues just in general about dead-arm. I very much believe this is a condition similar to what Oly lifters go through where the CNS wears down. As you know the curent thinking on this isnt so much time off but lighter activation and stimulation. Although extra rest doesnt hurt.

Coach Thibs neural charge workouts got me thinking about this a lot to the point where kids I work with that start experiencing this over summer I get them to do neural charge type of workouts and throwing lighter objects.

  3. RCHIII says:

Rosenthal had one bad inning where he gave up all 4 runs (2nd inning). Good news is he settled down to get through 6 without giving up any more damage. Team gave him a cheap win, but he deserved one after a few tough losses earlier in the year.

  4. IP says:

    Keith Butler: Palm Beach
    45.1 Innings
    5 ER
    12 Saves
    17 BB
    60 K
    opp. Batting Avg. .146

Why is this kid still in Palm Beach, I know he has the best pitching coach in the system which is great, but shouln’t he be challanged?

    • RCHIII says:

Good question. Springfield is 2 games back and could probably use him.

      • IP says:

There is one releif pitcher at Springfield (Not mentioning his name) has had an ERA of over 9.00 for the last 3 months! This kid’s confidence can’t be very good of performing. If they are not wanting to release him (Don’t like to see anybody released) I think they need to drop him back to PB and let him get some more work in, or something?
Springfield is still in the hunt with only 2 games back! I think Butler deserves a chance to see if he can perform at the next level and maybe help them!

        • pitch and hit says:

If you are talking about Jorge Rondon, he throws close to 100 mph which is considered ML stuff. You don’t release pitchers with that velo.
Maybe just another circumstance of moving one up too soon.

  5. Gruntosaurus says:

Note that Rob Stock is showing signs of being able to hit, and thereby stick at catcher. He’s not blowing high-A away but neither is he overmatched any more.

    • RCHIII says:

Good news. I saw him catch one game this year – he seems like he has a ways to go on his D, but the raw tools seem to be there.

      • cd says:

What game did you see? I’ve seen him catch multiple times and have quite the opposite opinion.

        • cariocacardinal says:

different how? He doesn’t have far to go or he doesn’t have the tools. I have not heard good reports on his D.

          • Andrew says:

In the many times I’ve seen him catch I he didn’t show me anything on D at all.

            • cd says:

I guess any one game can be anecdotal so I grabbed some defensive stats for 2011 (although catchers stats aren’t the greatest anyway).

              Stanley – 66 games, 8 PB, 7 error, 37% cs
              Stock – 45 games, 0 PB, 2 error, 31% cs
              De La Cruz – 37 games, 6 PB, 9 error, 37% cs
              Perez – 70 games, 10 PB, 13 error, 22% cs
              Cutler – 29 games, 2 PB, 1 error, 27% cs
              Derba – 43 games, 0 PB, 4 error, 45% cs
              Anderson – 80 games, 2 PB, 6 error, 23% cs

This is of course doesn’t include how well a player blocks, manages a game, or the “look” of his receiving.

  6. Jim says:

David Washington has homered three games in a row and four times in the last 10 games. He’s a big, young dude.

  7. VolsnCards5 says:

    it worked!!

  8. pitch and hit says:

    Nieto to Springfield….

  9. sadsushi says:

add me to the anthony garcia bandwagon..now has a average of .326 and ops of .997 in 38 games with 28 rbi’s ..hopefully a right handed version of taveras in the outfield

  10. RichardRich says:

Those Memphis guys are loving life on the road in the wacky PCL lets look at some 2011 OPS splits:

    Road vs Home
1.192 vs .692 for Mark Hamilton
1.188 vs .758 for Tyler Greene
.877 vs .633 for Bryan Anderson
.990 vs .780 for Andrew Brown
.786 vs .739 for Nick Stavinoha
.927 vs .860 for Matt Carpenter

  11. VolsnCards5 says:

@azru- I meant to type anaerobic. And I agree, shaking hand sounds bad, but I also think it could have just been sweat.

  12. Mark says:

For what its worth, (at Springfield games they have players sign before the game in case you didn’t know) and Shelby was scheduled to sign tonight and came out to sign and did it for a while. He had no cast or anything on his right hand and signed for a while. I was a little worried that he wouldn’t make the pregame autograph session if he was really hurt or had something significant going on with his right hand. I know there is a big difference between signing autos and pitching but it was encouraging to see no cast or anthing with his right hand and that he made his appearance and wasnt off getting tests or treatment on his hand. Again, take this for what it is, but this for what it is.

  13. JC says:

Don’t look now but that is 3 really good starts in a row for Castillo. Last 3 outings he has given up a total of 1 ER which was this game. Very nice to see.

  14. tom s. says:

Nice to see stanley and stock with 30+ percent CS. Anderson . . . Needs to hit even more if he wants to see MLB action. Cutler’s offensive numbers are outstanding. I wonder how much he has to improve defensively to catch attention from the big club. He’s not far off adams’ production by wOBA.
