  1. Indiana Cardinal says:

Are there any updates on the physical status of Shelby Miller?

Also has anyone seen any update reguarding signing Tilson or any of the other unsigned draft choices prior to the deadline on Monday?

  2. Lou Schuler says:

Adams hit his HR w. 1 out in the bottom of the 9th to send it into extras.

Swagerty pitched around 2 singles and a walk in the 10th to preserve the tie.

The winning run came on a pinch-hit single by Audry Perez.

It’s probably meaningless to their prospect status, but I’m always curious about the guys who come through in those situations. Seems like it’s usually guys who’re old for their league. But it’s more fun when the clutch plays come from guys like Adams and Perez.

    • pitch and hit says:

Adams is impressive because he comes through when they need the big play.

The offense has been awesome down the stretch and has come through at springfield, pitching a bit less desireable.

  3. Memphis hitters went back to back to back, solid pitching again from Dickson. Fick and Marte. I was at the game and Dickson has a dirty CB, Fick has a good sinker, and Marte is a thrower with a power arm. Stavi hit a bomb, hope they bring him up in September, he is the perfect pinch hitter, good breaking ball hitter also. Robinson is a player, he could play in the big leagues for someone. Last but not least I have a new campaign, FREE TYLER GREENE. He can swing it.

  4. buchek's bat says:

Sam Freeman seems to have come back pretty well from the TJ surgery. Gotta think he’ll be in the LOOGY discussion before too much longer–maybe next spring.

    • sadsushi says:

i agree..he will be in st. louis i think sooner rather than later

    • bc says:

Freeman’s been a slightly above average relief pitcher in AA. A FIP of 4.22, which is ok but not great. His tRA is 4.92, which, again, is average for the Texas league. He needs to improve his walk rate.

Honestly, other than Shelby Miller and Mikael Cleto, and maybe Nick Additon, SPR hasn’t really had any good pitching performers this year.

      • cariocacardinal says:

Greenwood has been just as good as Freeman I think he’ll be better in the long run. Of course Wright might pass them both by the end of next year!

        • buchek's bat says:

You may well be right. Whoever it may wind up being, I’ll be interested in seeing a locally grown (in the case of Greenwood I guess you’d have to say he was actually grafted onto the fruit tree) LOOGY rather than an older (sometimes REALLY older) and more expensive import.

      • pitch and hit says:

You noticed that too about the pitching?

Hope that Dennis Martinez comes back next year to springfield.

  5. sadsushi says:

another good start from ferrara..his era is at 2.98 now on the year..having a really good year besides the walks he’s given up..i watched the game on milb.tv and i like what i saw… taveras never gets cheated on his swings and neither does j rod 2.0

impressive star for hiraldo though his name reminds me of another heradlo haha anyone have a scouting report on him?

  6. sadsushi says:

disappointing news from DG but Kolton Wong has been asked not to do backflips during pre-game stretches to avoid injury..it makes sense though..the cardinals have a 1.5 million dollar investment in him

    • andrew says:

This a real story? I heard that backflip was only a 1 time thing because he didn’t want to run out on the field through the corn. The team agreed to he didn’t have to run out from the corn once if he did a backflip.

      • cariocacardinal says:

Sadushi is referring to pre-game stretches and you are thinking about running out onto the field to start the game – two totally different things.

    • Forsch21 says:

Should be noted that Wong hasn’t played the past two games. Any news of injury?

  8. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

What do we need Tyler Green for Furcal has been hitting a snappy 234 since the trade and has his average all the way up to 209 on the season.

    • GTL says:

He’s also hit 2 HRs and played great defense. Are you honestly against the Furcal deal? To me it’s the most obvious “win” trade the Cards have made in ages.

I’m in favor of bringing up TG, and perhaps even giving him the starting 2B job. I have a difficult time understanding why anyone would want less playing time for Furcal though, as he’s easily the most talented SS the Cardinals have had in years.

  9. RichardRich says:

Tyler Greene is a prime example of how far Triple-A is from the majors these days and also a prime example of how fans get fooled by minor league stats thinking there is sure major league talent there because of them. Its amazing to me the guy is about to turn 28 in a few days with terrible defense and a .609 OPS in the majors which is boosted by walks from teams going after the pitchers slot still has a section of the fan base fooled he can make it big because of minor league numbers.

  10. andrew says:

Has he gotten a full chance in the majors yet? He has a history of adapting slowly to each level but then when he gets it he really turns it on. Rich- you know as well as I do that Tyler Greene has Major League talent.

    • RichardRich says:

He has over 300 AB and over 80 starts how many shots do you need? Jay got his chance and he ran with his opportunity and kept getting more of them, Greene will be 28 in 3 days and has a .609 how long are you going to wait for him until he’s 30 or 35?

      • andrew says:

Greenes AB’s are over 3 seperate stints in the Big Leagues never over a sustainable period of time. Hard to stick when your the 25th man on the roster consistently and when you don’t get a shot over B.Ryan or Ryan Theriot

        • RichardRich says:

You can make all the excuses you want Andrew but we have had 11 other SS over the last 3 years and he’s had chances to get on the field and he’s never took hold, it didn’t take Jay that long to get into the line up and drive two more experienced players out of town.

Cruz, Salas. Lynn, Sanchez, Craig and Descalso got their feet wet and took the ball and ran and got themselves a spot on this and next years clubs, Tyler took the ball and kicked it and threw it into the stands. The guy is 28 in 3 days if he had all this big league talent he would be in the majors now either here or with someone else.

          • Andrew says:

No doubt he’s clammed up when he has gotten a chance but do you think that is an indicaton of his skills as a ball player or more about his mental desposition. So your denying his talent level? His has good power for a SS, good range, great arm, top speed. He’s got the tools just hasnt put it together yet.

            • RichardRich says:

He’s going to be 28 in 3 days has a .609 MLB OPS and poor defense, if he had all this talent he would be on one of the 30 MLB active rosters.

              • Andrew says:

Age means less when he was drafted out of college, his D and range are good, the majority of his errors recently in the big leagues are when he’s playing out of position at a position he never played in the minors. SS/2b.

                • RichardRich says:

LOL more and more excuses he has over 2500 minor league PA and over 350 MLB PA if he had half the talent you think he does he would be on someones roster.

                  • Andrew says:

Not necessarily we may have plans for him to try to get the starting job next year.

                    • RichardRich says:

Sorry but that made me laugh out loud, do you honestly think they see him as next years starter?

He couldn’t push any of those other 11 SS aside over last 3 years and take the job but you think they may hand it too him now after 3 failed attempts at gaining a foothold?

                    • Andrew says:

How does one have to do with the other? Theriot was a mistake that can’t field and costed 3.3 million. Greene is talented and would be a good cost controlled player if he puts it together finally.

                    • RichardRich says:

                      “if he puts it together”

They aren’t going to give the job to a unproven 28 year old guy, they would hand it to someone like Theriot again before they would Tyler Greene.

                  • Andrew says:

We don’t know whats in store for next year. Furcal surely won’t be back and I doubt Theriot is too. I doubt they go out and get another SS to bring in. I think he will have every chance to be the starting SS next year. Who do you believe will be the starting SS next year?

                    • RichardRich says:

I have no idea who will be the 2012 starting SS but I do know its not going to be Tyler Greene. If you think he could be then we are wasting each others time because one of our views just isn’t very realistic.

                    • Andrew says:

Ithink next year is make or break for him. Jackson is being groomed for 2013. Mo won’t repeat the Theriot mistake again and Furcal won’t be back. They will want cost controlled as all money needs to go to Pujols, Carp and maybe Berkman. Even other teams trash is going to cost 3mil.

                    • RichardRich says:

You’re right he isn’t going to repeat the Theriot mistake that’s why Greene isn’t going to be the SS.

          • Mr.STL says:

Cruz??? excuse me… oh a career low .200 hitter in the minors… lol… yep he’s the best… I’ll bet any amount of money that if B Anderson had the playing time that Cruz received when called up he would have hit much better than Cruz.

Also, its pretty idiotic that since Cruz was sent back down he has received two starts over Anderson… Hello Anderson was hit .351 in July and was hitting .378 in August… What gives with that.

            • RichardRich says:

Anderson has no future here sorry, Curz is the 2012 backup so you might as well accept it.

              • GTL says:

I find your dismissive tone a little rude, but I do agree with this. For better or worse, Cruz seems to have “stuck” with the big league club, and they don’t seem inclined to give Anderson many more chances.

                • RichardRich says:

Sorry if comes off as rude but its true, Anderson doesn’t have the defense to play catcher on a TLR/DD ran team. That ship has sailed long ago and he didn’t have a shot here regardless of Cruz arrival.

          • bc says:

I love how Cruz took the ball and ran with it and Greene did not, and they have the same wOBA this year (though Greene has the much better wOBAr)

            • RichardRich says:

Curz had a 0-for-16 run before his last PH single but when given his shot he took off with the bat, game calling and catch and throw while Greene is out there butchering routine plays. That’s why one will be the 2012 backup catcher and the other will be looking for a job in another organization.

              • cariocacardinal says:

Does it matter that Cruz slumped? Greene has had his slumps also (2 for his last 29).

Your argument of Greene’s OBA/OPS being bumped up from walks hitting in front of the pitcher doesn’t hold water since he has a lower walk rate in the #8 hole than he does overall.

His LD rate this year is 23% wish on a luck nuetral basis should result in a BABIP of about 35% yet he his is only 27%. Adjusting for that would put his BA up around 60 points. and his OPS over .700.

His defense at SS has been better than Theriot’s in both fld % and range. His fld % is better than Descalso’s. (but we are talking pretty small sample sizes here).

Has Greene had his chances? yes. Has he been given a fair shot? probably not. (and I don’t find those statements contradictory).

                • RichardRich says:

If you get 350 PA that’s more than a fair shot, it didn’t take any of the other rookies we have that long to get their spots locked up did it?

Nobody should talk F% with Greene we all saw how many plays he didn’t make that wasn’t even called errors,he may have better range than Theriot but he’s just as bad on defense.

                  TLR doesn’t forget these.
                  http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=14901869

                  • Andrew says:

Has he ever got an extended shot or just a game here and a game there? Over 3 or 4 seperate call ups.

                    • RichardRich says:

Every year he has been given extended PT just go look at his game logs on baseball-reference.com, he’s had the same or better opportunity that everyone who who has lapped him in the organization.

                  • Andrew says:

Of course it was a bone head play……do you think an occasional bonehead play is indicitive of the talent a player has? It blows my mind that you don’t believe that Greene would be a better alternative next year than say resigning Theriot. And you still haven’t given any other options to be our starting SS next year.

                    • RichardRich says:

Its not the occasional bonehead play, he makes tons of bad throws on DP and other mistakes ruled hits. It blows my mind you think a soon to be 28yo healthy player with a .609 OPS inflated off walks from hitting in front of the pitchers is a MLB starter, its clear nobody else that counts thinks he is even a bench player or he would be in the show,

Next April 1st he will be 28 years and 7 months and 15 days old and has done nothing in the show how long are you going to wait for this guy its not like he’s some kid Andrew the dude is older than Edwin Jackson.

                    • cariocacardinal says:

RR – the stats dont support your inflated walks in front of the pitcher theory. If your case is so strong, why invent stuff?

                    • RichardRich says:

He has 6 IBB accounting for 20% of walk total and has been pitched around several other times. That is the same amount of IBB that Pujols has this year in 116 less PA.

                    • cariocacardinal says:

What stats are you looking at? Baseball-reference shows him with 2 IBB all year and walk rate from the # 8 slot less than from other lineup positions.

                    • RichardRich says:

6 of his 30 career walks are IBB for a guy with a .303 OBP thus inflated numbers from situation and that’s not even counting the walks where they pitched around him to get to the pitchers slot.

  11. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

Just applying a little sarcasm to the situation. I think Furcal was worth a shot. We did not have to give up a whole lot, and the Cardinals have had good luck with these types of veteran middle infielder moves, but “the most talented short stop the Cardinals have had in years?” His last decent full season was in 2006.

Yes, he has hit two hrs and one even helped us win a game, and he is a good defensive player, but hitting 234 as your lead off man still pretty much sucks don’t you think?

    • GTL says:

I’ll agree that’s not ideal, but he’s extremely talented and I stand by my statement that he’s the best player we’ve had at SS in years. Last year he was worth 4.2 fWAR in just 2/3 of a season. We haven’t had a SS put up numbers like that since 2003 (Edgar Renteria had a very impressive 6.9 fWAR in a full season). And it’s not like that was a career year. Furcal has been consistently great since he first came up in 2000. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of an NL SS that’s been better in the last 5 years other than the superstar trio of Hanley, Tulo and Reyes. I think he’s a big addition for us down the stretch (though likely not enough to overcome the hole we’ve dug ourselves against the Brewers) and I don’t think he should lose playing time to anyone as we quite simply have no one in the system with his talent at SS.

      • cariocacardinal says:

What kind of contract do you think he will get this off season?

        • Andrew says:

I think Furcal will get a 3 year 8 or 9 mil a year contract.

          • RichardRich says:

Nobody is going to give Furcal that kind of deal! He will be 34 and a half years old next year and hasn’t stayed healthy in a several years. Not counting the signing bonus that’s what his AAV was for his lat deal.

            • Andrew says:

              So what does he get?

              • RichardRich says:

Nowhere near 24/27M over 3 years he’s only hitting .205 in 2011 and has only broke 400 AB once over the last 4 years and that year was his career low BA and he will be 34 and a half at start of next year

                • Andrew says:

So how much do you think it will be? Health is always the question and if a team is willing to bet that he stays healthy they will sign him.

                  • RichardRich says:

1 year 5-6M range if it was done right now, if he gets hot he may be able to work into a 2 year or more money in a one year deal but nobody in the majors would dare go longer since his value is at its all-time low.

                    • GTL says:

If that’s what he’s going for I’d want the Cardinals to snatch him up immediately. I think he’ll probably get something closer to what Andrew originally guessed, but I’d also have though Berkman would have signed for more than the 1 yr 8M deal we got him for. Maybe the market is really afraid of aging, injury prone former stars, even when they’re only one year removed from elite numbers. It’s pretty hard to believe that he wouldn’t be worth at least 1.2 WAR though, which is (roughly) what 6M is worth on the market if I recall correctly.

                    • RichardRich says:

Tejada had only missed like 40 games over the last 10 years and drove in 71 and scored 71 last year and got 6.5M for one year while Furcal has missed over 250 the last 5 years alone and is hitting .205.

                    • GTL says:

I don’t really think that supports your case. Tejada is 3 years older than Furcal, plays atrocious defense and hasn’t had a year as good as Furcal’s 2010 since 2006, but he got 6.5M and you only think Furcal will get 5-6M? I think the truth probably lies somewhere between your estimate and Andrew’s, but I’ll say right now I’d be shocked if he doesn’t do better than Tejada. I’d also be shocked if he signs a 1 year deal.

                    • RichardRich says:

Those 2 years in age difference are meaningless when the older player has only missed 40 games over previous 10 years and had a productive year and got just 6.5 and Hardy is having big year only got 7 per over 3 years.

Furcal could be 2 years younger than he is now and nobody would give him a 3 year deal at 8/9M I can not doubt promise you that. He’s a double question mark as you don’t know how long he can stay healthy and if he’s on the field you don’t know what your getting.

When we got him they didn’t say we acquired the Ghost of Rafael Furcal for nothing, The first two weeks here he’s hitting .224/.270/.362/.632 and that’s with him getting the free hit in Florida when ump called it a trap when Stanton clearly caught it.

The main reason he looks so good to Cardinals fans is because Theriot was so terrible.

                    • Hugecardsfan says:

The main reason Furcal looks so good is because he is still a darned fine defensive SS. Great arm and still has good range. I don’t get a lump in my throat every time a ball bounces in the direction of SS.

That he can swing a bat doesn’t hurt. I think he is a bit rusty with all the injuries, but if he can give us .250 with a little bit of pop and a good eye, I’m in favor of his getting a year at 6 or 7M…even if that’s a little overpayment. Shortness of contract is more important than exactly how much we pay him. He fits the description of a loaner who gets another “tryout”.

By 2013 I think Jackson is all over SS.

                    • Andrew says:

I disagree regarding 1 year 6 million. Unless he wants to rehab his image and try to get a multi year deal the following year like Berkman did with us. Furcal’s value hasn’t/hadn’t dropped as low as Berkmans had when we signed him. If Furcal and stay healthy the rest of the year and show good performance teams will give him a multi year deal. A good defensive SS with speed and the ability to hit are rare. They are going to get more than twice what we paid Theriot.

                    • RichardRich says:

Just because Berkman got 8 million doesn’t mean Furcal will, they are two different types of players. In Lance’s worst year of his career his OPS was .781 while Furcal has a .755 career OPS.

                  RichardRich,
Please be constructive with your comments. It is pretty obvious you are trying to incite an argument but Andrew has been very controlled in his responses. When you say that “Nobody is going to give Furcal that kind of deal!” a statement that you really have no basis on which to make, and then someone asks you a question about what you think, please respond constructively. Repeating your answer over again in a confrontational way without answering the question is the reason why many, well at least me, are tiring of your comments.

It must not be too obvious since I’m not trying to do anything of the sort.

Its basic common sense that nobody is going to give him that type of deal, I’m not trying to be rude but seriously that’s basically the same deal he got last time and more than Hardy got in a great year. The market isn’t handing out 3 year 27M deals to 34.5yo SS that haven’t broke 400 AB in 4 years and that year being his lowest career BA up until this year.

If some one gives Furcal 3/24 I’ll pay homage publicly to your infinite contact wisdom.

I think 2/12 would be the very top end and more likely in the 1/6 range.

Glad your not our GM Andrew!

I admit I don’t know a ton about contracts but I doubt a guy will be willing to play 2 years for the same amount that he made this year. He may want to pull a Berkman and do a 1 year deal to increase his value but why would he sign a 2 year contract when he could easily reestablish his value after 1. He would just be cheating himself out of money.

So you think he will retire if the market values him at less than half the worth of his previous contract? I don’t think so.

He could reestablish his value after one or he could get hurt again or have a bad year and leave that money from the second year on the table. He then is also one year older scaring teams off further.

I think most players who have been good trust in their ability to rebound and get back to regular levels. I don’t think he will retire but I really doubt he will only get 1 year at 6 mil a year.

Unless Furcal catches fire and helps the Cardinals make a run, which unfortunately seems unlikely as this point, I can’t believe he will be worth that much next year. Chances are he is going to finish with an average under .250 without much power and speed–which conjures up images of Brendan Ryan in my head.
