A bizarre scene in Memphis tonight as the homepage had two guys wearing Redbird hats facing off and every non-pitcher for the Memphis squad picked up exactly 1 hit.

Johnson City won 1-0 for those keeping score at home.

Congratulations to Matt Adams for breaking the single season HR record for the Springfield Cardinals previously held by Colby Rasmus! And it came at the Wolf Stadium……

Happened to be in San Antonio yesterday and went to the game. Some notes:

-Someone was asking about park factors and the legitimacy of Adams’ homers on the probable starters thread. Idk the park factors, but the dimensions were 310 to left, 402 to center, and 340+ to right (I couldn’t see that last digit from my seat, only ’34′).
His first home run was a blast to right-center (To the right of the American flagpole in this picture, but left of the stadium lights http://www.digitalballparks.com/Texas/Missions4.html ). The right field wall is about twice as high as a normal outfield wall, and the shot was well clear of it; truly a no-doubter right when it came off the bat. I have a hard time imagining that not going out in any ballpark.
The second homer was more of a deep fly ball that felt like it took a bit longer to get out. It was down the right field line and cleared the top of the wall by a bit, but was clearly not as deep as the first one ( Just above the blue and white advertisements in this one http://www.digitalballparks.com/Texas/Missions6.html ).

Apparently only part of it got posted:

-Rondon was pretty mad upon being taken out of the game with the bases loaded, as someone (presumably him) tossed their glove up to the first row from the dugout about the time that he exited the game.

-To comfort him, Freeman gave up a grand slam to the next batter on the FIRST PITCH. Better than stringing him along, I suppose.

-In the 3rd inning, Rapoport and Jackson managed a double-steal on the pitch Jermaine Curtis struckout on, but Jackson was called out due to batter interference.

-The error on Daryl Jones in the eighth was just a simple, shallow flyball to right that he was sitting underneath, and then let bounce off his glove as he one-handed it. The next batter hit a deeper flyball right to him, which he caught, still one-handed.

-Cox allowed a ‘single’ in the seventh on a bunt that he tried to let roll foul, which it did not. It looked to me like he still had a shot, if he had tried it, but it’s hard to say.

-Jackson had a couple of nice plays well to his left, one nearly behind the 2nd base bag, and the other seemingly right of it from my angle (behind the 1B dugout).

-Rapoport looked like he was getting to just about every flyball in center. He had to cover a lot of ground on some of them, but seemed to get there every time.

I hope some of that is interesting!

Thanks for the firsthand reports. Always good to get the impressions of those able to put eyes on the action.

Matt Adams has been pretty amazing this year, and I have to admit while I’m trying to maintain some skepticism due to all the red flag we’ve all rehashed plenty of times before, it’s harder and harder all the time not to be awfully excited about a guy with his offensive potential.

Keith Butler is a bad, bad man. He’s made 26 appearances this season, and has allowed runs in just three, count ‘em, three of those appearances. Back-to-back outings in mid-late July, and once in June. That’s it. Low level or not, that’s pretty unreal.

        • easy says:

Actually he had a 2 run hiccup on August 14th but you’re right. He’s been amazing.

          • Aaron says:

Huh. You’re right. The game log on First Inning doesn’t even list the 14th as an appearance. I suppose I’ll just have to give up and use the milb website. FI is so much faster and simpler, but it it isn’t accurate then there’s really no point. Oh, well.

      • easy says:

All of it was interesting and thanks for the photos of the ballpark.

        • Tackle Box says:

Yeah, it was definitely all interesting.

And is that a website with ballpark views? because if it is, I might have just figured out what I’m doing this weekend. I could look at stuff like that for hours.

          • Tackle Box says:

Eh…that website isn’t up to date. Not even close. Too bad. I was really forward to some new picks of the stadiums I hadn’t seen. Will probably still page through a few though.

      • Hugecardsfan says:

        Nice report. Appreciate it.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

Rondon may have been mad, but not as mad as the fans who watch him walk guys while trying to hit triple digits on the radar gun. What good is a fast ball that big if you have no idea where it’s going? Change is needed there.

  5. Zach says:

Congratulations to Matt Adams on a really great season – we can talk park dimensions, but I don’t care – average prospects don’t hit 30 home runs.

I hope they get him in shape this off season and he’s either a future Card or a legitimate trade chip

    • Brian B says:

Zach, I also agree with you. Matt Can hit and hit for power. I’m tired of hearing people say it’s because of the park and the wind stream. Who else has hit 30 HR’s in Springfield? Everyone player has the shot to do it and yet only one has broken the record this season. I say Matt is a hell of a prospect to me. Congratulations to Matt Adams

Justin wright has been a beast this year

  7. shaneo69 says:

Kozma has started the last two games at 3B with Carp sitting one out and then DH’ing. Looks to me like they’re grooming Koz to be a utility IF but he doesn’t seem to have the necessary scrapiness to succeed in that role, at least in St. Louis.

Nice to see Anderson hit a HR in his first action since Cruz came back.
