Memphis rocked Kyle Drabek for the system’s only win on the night.  Eric Fornataro was good for Palm Beach in a losing effort and Johnson City lost in the 16th inning despite Gary Apelian’s stellar day.  Let’s get to the details.

  1. Clark says:

Fornataro and Gast have been very solid all year.

  2. pitch and hit says:

Ott had a great outing, the reliever didn’t do his job.
I am glad that you mentioned it was a solid start.

  3. azruavatar says:

Rahmatulla and Anthony Garcia are in a rat race for JC’s OPS lead. Rahmatulla winning at the moment. Given that Garcia is 2 years the junior, I should probably start paying more attention to him.

  4. azruavatar says:

Also, why in the world do we have a 29 year old corner outfielder on our Memphis roster. Blech.

    • bc says:

Daryl Jones is wondering the same thing. My sense is that it’s Stav’s “reward” for being a good soldier.

    • Mrs. TLR says:

The guy has about 25 HRs and 95 RBIs. Maybe after this season, Stavi can land a gig in Korea or Japan. Leading Memphis in RBIs is why he is on the Memphis roster.

    • tom s. says:

fyp: why in the world do we have a 29 year old corner outfielder with a wOBA below PCL average on our memphis roster? double blech.

alt. fyp: why in the world do we have a 32-year-old “outfielder” with a career .291 OBP on our major league team while a 24-year-old minor league prospect who hasn’t had a season OBP of less than .366 since quad cities in 2008 sitting on our memphis roster? triple blech.

      • pitch and hit says:

Probably one of the reasons everyone else does. Memphis played a team not sure there was on born after 85.

      • Mrs. TLR says:

Tom: news flash. Memphis is about the lowest scoring park in the PCL. There are plenty of parks out west where the air is dry or the ball carries. For instance, the park in New Mexico. Memphis is always going to have players with offensive stats below PCL averages, and pitchers with good stats, relative to the rest of the league.

        • tom s. says:

thanks for the condescension. here’s a list of memphis position players with a lower wOBA than stavinoha in 150 or more PAs.

          donovan solano
          ramon vasquez
          james rappoport
          freddy bynum
          pete kozma

everybody else with 150 or more PA’s has an equal or better wOBA – bryan anderson, adron chambers, aaron luna, etc. if nick stavinoha isn’t better at hitting than a bunch of people who play better defense than he does or at more premium positions, then he doesn’t belong on the team. nick stavinoha is a weak fielder at best, limited to the low-end of the defensive spectrum, like LF or 1b. if he can’t hit, he doesn’t have a use.

“Where there is mystery, it is generally suspected there must also be evil.”

      Lord Byron

      • Mrs. TLR says:

What did Byron have to say about baseball cluelessness?

        • buchek's bat says:

          Lord Byron? Dunno.

But, after the last 4 years of Stavy swingin’ down on one knee, Aaron Miles, Jeff Suppan, Pedro Feliz, Corey Patterson, Miguel Batista, Ryan Franklin, Rick Ankiel, Chris Duncan, Ryan Theriot, Randy Winn, Joe Thurston….well… let’s just say….

“You can observe a lot just by watching.”

          Yogi Berra

        • buchek's bat says:

Of course, Lord Byron was around in the dead ball era. But you already knew that.

  5. Andrew says:

Taveras is having a down week and his average has dropped alot. Hope he picks it up soon.

  6. Mrs. TLR says:

Apelian, Garcia, Rahmatulla, Roberto De La Cruz, and Washington. 5 who have shown hitting promise at Johnson City this summer, helping make a good squad there.

  7. Lou Schuler says:

FWIW, Tilson played his first pro game this afternoon in the GCL. Went 0-3, 1 BB, SB, run. Struck out once.

  8. Tommm says:

Hey now…if you are going to point out the fact that Stavinoha is 29 years old (thus explaining his good night at the plate)…you should probably point out that Tyler Greene is 28. Let’s face it, neither Stavinoha nor Greene have done ANYTHING at the major league level.
