Swagerty the reliever could start in Memphis next season and find himself in St. Louis by the end of the season. Swagerty the starter is much further down the trail from the MLB. It will be interesting to see which direction the organization goes with Swags.
Still wouldn’t be suprised to see Swagerty start next year in Springfield. Hes only been there a week so far and the season is cominng to a close. Wish they would have brought him up earlier, that bullpen sure could have used his arm this season in that bullpen. It is will be interesting to see if they try him as a starter next year or just make him a bullpen guy. He kind of reminds me of Joe Kelly. I’ve watched him start multiple times here in Springfield and he has great stuff but doesn’t put too many great games together, he just looks like a guy they should start grooming into a closer, but I guess no harm in try to see how he does as a starter.
Yeah you’re right. He could start in AA even as a reliever but I don’t think he would stay there long in that scenario. The AAA bullpen has been gutted with promotions. Maybe Reifer returns strong in 2012 but outside of him the AAA bullpen is weak. Jess Todd as closer pretty much explain the situation there.
I agree if he did start in AA it wouldn’t be for long. Look at Springfields bullpen has been horrible as well this year. Rondon with 7 svs leads the team and sports a 9.09 era and Kopp was second onthe team with 4 and he wasn’t dominating either. that says a lot about this bullpen injuries and ineffectiveness. Its a shame Mulligan got hurt this year, I was looking forward to seeing how he performed this year. I attend a ton of Springfield games and get to watch them live and that bullpen has lost many games for that team. Which is a shame because they have a nice lineup with Cox and Adams in the middle with other guys having nice years (Duncan, Jackson, etc.). If the team had any consitent pitching other that Milelr they should have a nice shot at the making it deep in the playoffs.
Starlin Rodriguez continues to hit at a decent clip for his position.
It’s going to be interesting to see where Wong starts in 2012, and how that affects Rodriguez and Greg Garcia.
Then there’s Rahmatulla coming up behind Wong.
The crush of 19- and 20-year-old outfielders will probably be the most pressing problem next year, but there also figures to be a logjam with 21- and 22-year-old middle infielders.
As much as I’ve been watching the young infielders, I haven’t paid as much attention to the outfield numbers. But you bring up an interesting point. We have a group of outfielders whose rise through the system has stalled-out (the usual/natural attrition, I suppose).
Daryl Jones, Aaron Luna, Thomas Pham, Shane Robinson, some of these guys don’t seem like they’re going to pass muster. I hope Chambers is in the discussion for a fourth outfield spot with the parent club in ST 2012. But now we have the next wave of younger guys coming, and I wonder what will become of some of these “older guys.” It only seems like yesterday that Daryl Jones was named to the Futures game. My how time — and prospects fly!
Pham’s problem is that he can’t stay healthy now that he’s performing well. Hope he isn’t derailed, because talent-wise, I like him better than Chambers.
yes
I’d have to say that you might have missed some guys in the outfield that the Cards need to make a decision on or will just leave them to be system guys. Wouldn’t shock me if Luna, Chambers, Robinson are on the 40 man next year. IMO, Brown and Stavinoha will be gone or not on the 40 man. Jones is done. Pham still needs to stay healthy at least a season and outplay one of guys ahead of him. Chambers and He are two different players on the offensive side.
Robinson will be 27 entering next season. He’s a light hitting outfielder with some speed. I’m not sure why the Cardinals would feel compelled to put him on the 40 man. I’m not a big Chambers proponent but I think they’ll protect him for CF depth.
The outfield position, in the upper two levels of the farm system, is replete with spare parts: Memphis– Brown, Robinson, (Hamilton and Hill, if you wanted to place them in the outfield group); Springfield — Luna, Jones, Rapaport. Players who have one trait or another to recommend them, but none with an overall game/skill set that would help a major league club. In the case of Daryl Jones, it’s a player who has languished, stuck in the Horse Latitudes for two years now, adrift, and needs to be let go.
I suppose Pham and Chambers, as centerfielders, have more potential organizational usefulness in this group in our post-Rasmuns world. The rest–seem like a collection of spare parts.
Did Seth Maness skip Quad Cities? I like that he had a real solid debut at Palm Beach. Another pitching prospect to keep an eye on!
Yes to your first question.
Bogus link here: both the QC and PB summaries point to the PB recap and box score. The QC one needs to be retargeted.
I gather that Wong is on the DL. What’s the story?
Pulled hammy running the bases.
Does anyone know or know where I could find out what the RBI record is for Springfield? And how many games they have left? a 30-100-.300 + season for Adams would just be simply exciting!
In other news, I will be attending tonights Cards-Cubs game….. hopefully they will not get swept or I’m gonna get a lot of shit
Travis Hanson has it with 97 but the team has only been around since 2005, Steven Hill had a shot with 86 in 93 games last year but got promoted and they have 16 games left.
What would starlin rodriguez or greg garcia have to do to end up on a top 20 list? Seems like they’re probably both in the 20-30 range right now. Would another year of solid offensive numbers get them taken more seriously?
Unfortunately, we don’t have any posters in palm beach to give us defensive reports.
Would be good to know whether either is a defensive whiz. Starlin doesn’t have 300 PAs at A ball or above, and he currently sports an abysmal walk rate at Palm Beach.
I like Colin Walsh too, and all three of these guys are basically the same age. Walsh’s offensive stats are better than both Garcia and Starlin – higher wOBAr and more walks than Ks. Az gave him poor defensive marks in his recent trip to QC, but some scouting reports at the time of the draft touted his defense (there are other indices of at least passable defense – he was all PAC-10 defense at 2B at Stanford).
I’m not from Florida, but I did watch Johnson city several times last year. I kept notes on the players there and Garcia’s read like this:
“Hard nosed player, quiet swing, excellent foot work with above average range, will make a nice organizational player”
At the time I was watching a Major college guy who was sent to rookie ball, so I didn’t think anybody thought much of his bat. Plus he was more aggressive at the plate than I like, so I assumed his discipline wouldn’t hold up at higher levels, and that was a knock against him.
However, now that he has put up a Woba+ of 110 and is below the league average age, I might have to rethink the organizational player comment.
Just saw an article where Pirates GM said that Jameson Taillon can overpower Hitters with his breaking ball, but is having trouble finding consistency and command of his fastball. That’s like the polar opposite of Shelby. One of you needs to figure out how to meld Taillon’s slippery into Shelby without the pirates knowing.
Can anybody tell me how Scott Biddle is progressing? He was great at Ole Miss and I really want to see him play for the Cardinals. It would be great to see 2 Ole Miss alums on the team.
He was released several weeks ago.
Springfield is doing a carbon copy of the Big Birds, Blowing tons of saves and now losing to bad teams with a 3 game losing streak to Corpus Christi to basically end the season.
Lots of stuff went wrong with Springfield this year, not all the organizations fault, hopefully next year Martinez will come back to work with the pitchers.
They just lost a 4th in a row to Corpus Christi one of the worst teams in all the minors this year. But then again the S-Cards are the next worse team in the Texas league despite having many of the players fans call our better prospects on the roster this year.
That was old friend Mike Parisi holding Memphis to 1 run in 6.2 innings, lowering his ERA to 5.8 on the season.
