I’m a little busy at the moment but cariocacardinal made a comment a few weeks ago about being more interested in, shall we say, less prominent starters. The hidden gems, if you will.
After the jump you’ll find a list of current/recent starting pitchers who have K:BB ratios of 2:1 or better. That’s something of a minimum threshold for a starting pitcher in my mind. If they don’t meet that criteria, something isn’t working. I’m only considering prospects at their current level, which admittedly penalizes some pitchers who advanced during the season.
Memphis
Brandon Dickson – 114/32 – 3.56K/BB
Nick Additon – 68/33 – 2.06K/BB
Under 2 – Adam Ottavino, Maikel Cleto, Brian Broderick
Springfield
Shelby Miller – 71/27 – 2.63K/BB
Joe Kelly – 43/21 – 2.05K/BB
Deryk Hooker – 28/14 – 2.00K/BB
Under 2 – Michael Blazek, John Gast, Kevin Thomas, Ar
Palm Beach
Tyler Lyons – 68/26 – 2.61K/BB
Richard Castillo – 44/18 – 2.44K/BB
Eric Fornataro – 108/46 – 2.34K/BB
Under 2 – Carlos Martinez, Kevin Siegrist
Quad Cities
Ryan Copeland – 73/12 – 6.08K/BB
Boone Whiting – 113/20 – 5.65K/BB
Trevor Rosenthal – 122/35 – 3.49K/BB
Under 2 – Anthony Ferrara, Zach Russell, Seth Blair
This isn’t intended to be definitive. Just a look at some of the pitchers doing well in the system right now. Tyler Lyons was a name that jumped out at me. I didn’t realize he was pitching that well at Palm Beach.

I don’t know. There’s some pretty interesting prospects in the under 2 list. Hopefully Cleto, Gast and Martinez will improve their K/BB rate. Lyons really has been good lately and Copeland and Whiting have been amazing at their level.
Poor Arquimedes.
I agree the the K/BB rate is important, but would also like to see the list with K/9.
Castillo is even better if you just look at him as a starter.
What I like about this list is the depth top to bottom. It doesn’t even include Swagerty who is relieving presently but was a starter earlier in the year or Jenkins who is @ Johnson City.
or Carlos Martinez who had the appropriate ratio at Quad Cities before tiring out at Palm Beach.
Blazek strikes out 10 while walking just 1 tonight putting him at a 2:1 ratio.
