  1. pitch and hit says:

Marte leads the league in saves. I know he is older, but is there any reason why he wasn’t brought up to STL?

  2. cariocacardinal says:

Cox is OPS’ing over 1.000 in his last 200 plate appearances. That includes an ISO SLG of about .180.

Basically a year younger than Brett Wallace in his first full season and hitting better and a is better defender (if not great).

I don’t think it will happen but with the STL team out of contention, I’d like to see him get a Sept call up.

    • Jeffery says:

Cox is not a great defender. At this time he is at best average. I have not seen any range at all from him.

      Carpenter is a better defender.

      • bc says:

Hell, Carpenter better be a better defender than Cox, he’s 4.5 years older than him.

        • bc says:

          er, 3.5 years. Point remains.

        • Brian B says:

I also agree Carpenter is better doesn’t matter his age. They both have played 3rd base since before being drafted.Since it looks dim for Cardinals to make it to playoffs, I say they should call up Carpenter, Chambers, Matt, Miller and Jackson etc. Let the minors league players play for the team. They properly can get lucky and win games for STL.

          • SLCard says:

I give this team until September 1 to show some signs of life. Lacking that, its time to not only call up some guys, but clear space on the 40 man by making decisions about who will be in the Cards plans for next year. For starters, they should already be putting quite a few guys on trade waivers to find out what (if any) value they have to other teams. Second, those guys who may not have much value to other teams (like Theriot perhaps), they need to determine if they plan on keeping them around for the future. A guy like Theriot (sorry to pick on one guy too much, but he meets my point on different levels) will be getting paid via arbitration much better money than a player like Descalso who is at the very least a pretty equal player. If Theriot doesn’t factor into their plans for next year, then I think they should try to cut ties to open up space on the 40 man roster. Maybe they can only get a super longshot of a prospect for him, but hey, at least they opened up a spot on the 40 man. Finally, with those open spots on the 40 man, they should promote some of those players who will need to be added to the roster to protect them from the rule 5 draft this winter. It might be nice to see a guy like Ryan Jackson get the call, but I believe (could be wrong on this) that he has one more season before he must be on the 40 man for protection purposes. Therefore I am specifically referring to guys they would be adding this offseason anyhow. For example, I think that Sam Freeman is at the threshold for the Rule 5 after this season, so given the lack of depth the Cards suffer from among the lefty relief corps down on the farm, he might be a logical choice. I would (and probably will) need to take a look at the draft class from a few years ago to figure out who else this would apply to, but I think they should give guys like Sam Freeman who may be getting added to the 40 man this offseason anyhow the first look. In spite of using Theriot repeatedly, he is certainly not the only player this applies to. For example, is Skip Schumaker just a utility guy at this point? If so, his shoes can be filled for a LOT cheaper, and given his strong second half and one more year of team control, he seems like a guy that should be able to net a bit of a return. Probably not more than a mid level prospect, but if the Cards are likely to cut ties with him this offseason via a non-tender, why not make a move now?

    • Wade says:

where do you hear “great” defender from? I haven’t seen anyone on this site or anywhere else say that so I’m just asking what you base that on.

  3. Westvleteren_12 says:

Two blown saves by Springfield in the last 2 nights. This team cannot finish a game.

    • sadsushi says:

in fairness to swagerty last night, his defense let him down..a routine groundball to third base resulted in a bad throw and matt adams couldn’t keep it in front of him so that allowed the tying run to come home

  4. bc says:

Kyle Hald and Tyler Rahmatulla named Appy League All-Stars.

    http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110824&content_id=23691592&vkey=news_t438&fext=.jsp&sid=t438

Also, great start for Seth Blair after a short stint on the DL – i.e., no walks, no HBP, no wild pitches. It would be good to know what the story is on him – is/was he injured? Mechanics problem/change? Was it just Steve Blass disease? You don’t go from having pretty good control and dominating the PAC-10 to being completely unable to find the plate in less than a year unless there is some underlying reason.

    • cariocacardinal says:

By far the best start of the year for Blair. hope he can keep it up. How many more starts does he have this year 2? 3? It would be nice for him to finish with confidence.

    • easy says:

Yep that’s the big news of the day. I don’t know if they’ll trust him enough to give him playoff starts but, if he’s turned a corner, I’d like to see him get more work.

    • JC says:

Very nice to see Blair have a good start. And the stat that excites me the most is 0BB, HBP or WP’s. That’s definitely a step in the right direction. Let’s see how he does the next time out.

  5. Neil T. Skaggs says:

Why is Edgar Lara back at Quad Cities?

    • cariocacardinal says:

Because they needed an Of and he is going to be FA after the season anyway so it matters not where he is at?

  6. hurricane jake says:

Charlie Tilson promoted to Johnson City.

    From Twitter: B_Walton(Brian Walton)
“#stlcards 2nd round pick OF Charlie Tilson moving up from GCL to Johnson City #stlminors”

  7. Mike G says:

When Tilson was signed it was stated (or perhaps speculated, I forget which) that he would likely be moved to Johnson City before the season was over to get playoff experience. His promotion has less to do with how he looked in the Gulf Coast League than with a desire to challenge this rather expensive acquisition and see how he does under a semblance of pressure.

    • cariocacardinal says:

It also keeps him playing longer since the GCL will wrap long before ‘JC is out of the playoffs. Even if not used much in games, it’ll keep in an organized setting for BP, etc for a longer period.

  8. Hugecardsfan says:

Alex Eisenberg of Baseball Intellect does a nice piece on Matt Adams:

    http://www.baseball-intellect.com/is-matt-adams-for-real/

    Excerpts include the following:

On film, the first thing you notice is Adams’ size. He’s a large, imposing figure and he comes equipped with a lot of strength. This is evident on the first pitch of the video below. On a pitch down and on the outside corner, Adams just goes down and gets it, going the other way, and rocketing the ball out of the ballpark for a home run.

pitchers can exploit this aggressiveness. He’ll swing through his fair share of pitches, mostly when he’s fooled on a breaking ball or when he swings at a particularly well located pitch. Otherwise, Adams’ hand eye coordination enables him to make consistent, hard contact. Even his outs are often loud. He has tremendous plate coverage. Even balls that are a few inches off the outside corner aren’t far off the plate enough to be safe from hard hit ball by Adams.

Adams has really quick hands and a whippy swing, leading to lots of bat speed. In addition, he moves well for his size so he’s not some stiff.

He later describes at bats against Jake Odorizzi, Patrick Keating, Kevin Chapman, Joe Gardner and Casey Weathers. Interesting comments.
