Taveras is unreal….Tilson took a walk…..yay for our terrific T’s (that’s going to need a lot of work)

  2. Lou Schuler says:

Tilson was charged with an error but also credited w. 2 outfield assists. I just hope he can hit.

    • cariocacardinal says:

I think he will hit. I’m worried whether he will get his OPS above .700 (even if hitting .300) due to lack of power.

      • BigJawnMize says:

I am not confident of this, but he might be able to develop into a prolific doubles hitter and be able to pump up his OBP that way. He has the speed so he will be able to stretch a lot of singles into doubles…going to need to learn to be aggressive and a plus plus baserunner. He is going to need to hit well north of 300 to get over 750 OPS. I dont he is going to wal too much because I doubt anyone is going to be too afraid to pitch to him.

      • Mrs. TLR says:

Tilson reminds me of a longer shot Pete Kozma.

          • Kdizzle says:

Because he’s short, white, and doesn’t project for above average major league power if I had a guess.

            Pretty lazy comparison.

            • Mrs. TLR says:

Kozma went to a fine high school for baseball, in a Tulsa suburb. Yet high school SS is a long shot for ML success. There is a very poor success rate for SSes from HSes in the first round of the draft. Keith Law criticized Kozma as an overdraft, as not having enough upside tools to justify first round. I can see this point and would not have drafted Kozma where Luhnow did.
Tilson also seems a risk, on a probability basis. He had one summer 2010 showcase where he did well, but scouts who saw him at other times were not so high. Toolswise, Tilson is no Rasmus, who tied Bo Jackson’s HR record for an Alabama high schooler.
Tilson has been compared to Ellsbury. But Ellsbury had proved himself at an elite college program.
Tilson played near Chicago, not in a baseball hotbed. Is there any reason to suspect Tilson will be better than Adron Chambers, 38th rounder who has fought his way up to AAA? No. Tilson could be ok for the 4th or 5th round, he seems a long shot for the 2nd.

  3. VolsnCards5 says:

I’m ok with only occasional doubles power, if he gets on base at .350 clip or higher and plays good defense. That’s a valuable player

    • Cardini99 says:

Not to mention he is also considered to have plus speed and be a plus baserunner so should make atleast some impact on the base paths too, to go along with good defense and hitting potential.

  4. Mark says:

Nice to see Swagerty get the save. Also that Jackson contineing to collect the hits and show some power on the road.

I’m a fan of Joe Kelly but he has been very inconsistent in AA this year. Great stuff but not sure if he will stick as a starter.

    • tom s. says:

kelly’s transition to springfield has been interesting. he’s actually striking out MORE guys in springfield, and walking fewer. 7.68 K/9 & 4.21 BB/9 in PB, v. 8.27 & 4.05 in springfield.

he’s getting killed by two things. first, home runs: he’s getting knocked out of the park at eight time the rate as in PB: 0.12 HR/9 in PB v. 1.01 in SPD. second, his calling card, the groundball, has dropped some (62% @ PB v. 55% at SPD).

some of it is probably bad luck (his BABIP also jumped 100 points from .275 in PB to .374 in SPD), some of the home run rate is surely the park.

i also would idly speculate that he may be overthrowing a little bit because he’s nervous about the transition and about the pitching environment in springfield. that would explain the groundball rate drop (although i checked earlier this month and his GB rate drop was much bigger — iirc, his SPD groundball rate had been around 44%, so he may be pulling out of this problem).

to the extent it’s bad luck, it will work itself out. i suspect some of it is a confidence/coaching thing. the springfield coaching staff is pretty good and should talk him out of any overthrowing that’s going on. i think if he has confidence that a fastball that drops a little bit more even at a couple fewer MPH will get more batters out, he’ll look like a serious starting pitcher.

Nice article in today’s STLPost about Kopp’s successful transition to the bullpen late this year.
    http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/article_17e08b8b-51af-535e-83a0-7ca17dd83753.html

I’m glad they made the move now to see if they can salvage something out of Kopp in the pen as he has been removed from the 40 man. Wish they would have done the same with Ottavino. He might see the same jump in velo which could give him the confidence not to nibble at the edges and throw strikes. Our bountiful surplus of righthanded relievers has dwindled this season. Another conversion to the pen could help remedy that problem.

    • sportsman says:

i’ve been on the otto to the pen track for quite a while
      not a bandwagon, however

      • jjray says:

The organization, at least from the outside looking in, gave up on Otto when he refused surgery (thinking this was last season). That may have been shortsighted on their part.

        • andrew says:

I get the same feeling on that. The organization should be more concerned about getting the situation right rather than having a player do what the organization wants.

        • cariocacardinal says:

Maybe the Cards dont want to invest a lot in him because they think he is still injured.

        • pitch and hit says:

Kopp is hitting 96-97 and can sustain that for longer out of the pen than as a starter. It all made sense, but it’s not written in stone, it had nothing to so with salvaging anything but rather they needed a spot on the 40 man asap.

Small tears do not require surgery, Ott was cleared to pitch. Perhaps there is more to it than we know.

    • bc says:

I don’t think Ottavino’s control/command problems are confidence related. He just doesn’t have the talent to pinpoint fastballs. I’m fine with moving him to relief, though.

  7. IllinoisCardinalFan says:

Kelly must really be freaked out by pitching in Springfield. His era is 4.53 higher at home than on the road. Also has more walks at home but also more strike outs.

  8. sadsushi says:

can oscar taveras be stopped? the answer is no..unbelievable year for him ..i’d say he’s in the top 5 prospects for the cardinals and should start in palm beach or maybe even springfield next year

  9. andrew says:

I think he’s easily the 3rd best prospect in our system right now. He had a very off game when I saw him on the 26th but its somewhat expected with a soft tossing junk ball left hander throwing against him. Even with that he his the second hardest ball of the game a screamer to the 3b that was never more than 2 feet off the ground. It was hit so hard that the man on 3b was doubled off even with the 3b catching the ball 10 feet off the bag.

    • sadsushi says:

it seems like he hits the ball the opposite way alot too..has some good opposite field power going on..he’s 2 for 2 today with a homerun and 4 rbi’s.didn’t even start today but doing his thing as usual..he is a man child in low A

  10. james says:

why do u guys still doubt matt adams he has produced at every league he has went to when he makes it big u guys that have doubted him want to be his best friendwill probably

  11. Andrew says:

He has great power to the opposite field. I’ve said this before but he hit a line drive that almost left the stadium in left center field Davenport during the first series of the year.
