The farm went just 2-4 but a top prospect continued his incredibly hot hitting.  Check out who it was below!

Memphis 3, Albuquerque 1

  • Adron Chambers had a triple in the leadoff spot as his sole hit. He was hit twice by a pitch from Francisco Felix
  • Shane Robinson and Tyler Greene both went 1-3. Greene stole his 18th base and now has a 27:1 stolen base-to-caught stealing ratio on the season between Memphis and St. Louis….very impressive
  • Matt Carpenter went hitless in 3 at-bats but walked once
  • Bryan Anderson went 1-3 with a walk
  • Pete Kozma had a single and had stolen base number 2
  • Nick Stavinoha pinch-hit and had a double
  • Adam Ottavino continues to show inconsistent command with 5 walks and a wild pitch in 4 innings. He limited the damage to 1 run after not allowing an extra-base hit (3 singles) and striking out 3.
  • Victor Marte pitched a perfect 9th for his 29th save

Arkansas 8, Springfield 2

  • Jim Rapoport and Jose Garcia both went 1-3 with a double batting 1st and 7th, respectively. Rapoport stole a base and walked once
  • Jermaine Curtis went 2-4, all singles
  • Ryan Jackson and Matt Adams both went hitless in 4 plate appearances. Jackson committed his 19th error (throwing)
  • Zack Cox had a single in 4 at-bats and committed his 18th error
  • John Gast was hurt by bad defense, but also didn’t pitch too well with a line of 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R (2 earned), 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts
  • Everybody’s favorite converted reliever to starter, turned temporary reliever Jordan Swagerty gave up 2 runs off of 2 hits and 2 walks in an inning. He also struck out 1

Jupiter 3, Palm Beach 0

  • Ted Obregon went 2-5 and was the only Cardinals batter to record more than 1 hit. He stole his 12th base
  • Kyle Conley was the only batter for PB to have an extra-base hit, a double. He also walked once
  • Xavier Scruggs walked an impressive 3 times
  • Adam Melker hit 9th and went 1-3 with a walk
  • Richard Castillo gave up 10 hits and walked 1 in 6 innings, but limited the damage to 3 runs. He struck out just 1 batter

Burlington 5, Quad Cities 4

  • Oscar Taveras’s incredible season continued as he went 4-6 with a double. He’s 22 for his last 37 and has posted an OPS below 1.000 for just one month when he had only 40 at-bats in June (he had fewer than that in April and May, but I digress).
  • Ronny Gil walked twice but went hitless in 4 at-bats
  • Geoffrey Klein also recorded a hat trick in strikeouts but went 2-5 with a double
  • It’s nice to see Kolten Wong back as he led off and went 2-5 with a double and walk
  • Colin Walsh had the golden sombrero
  • Joey Bergman wasn’t much better as he had the hat trick in strikeouts but recorded a hit
  • Zach Russell struck out an impressive 8 batters over 5.2 innings but gave up 3 runs off of 3 hits and 3 walks. He threw a wild pitch but also recorded a groundout-to-flyout ratio of 6:1

State College 2, Batavia 1

  • Vance Albitz led off and hit 2 doubles on the night
  • Juan Castillo started behind the plate and went 2-4 with a double
  • Romulo Ruiz and Reggie Williams both walked once and had a single in 3 at-bats
  • Casey Rasmus walked twice
  • Corey Baker struck out none in 6 innings, but he also gave up just 2 runs (1 earned) in 6 innings off of 6 hits (1 double). He threw a wild pitch and had 9 groundouts compared to 1 in the air

Johnson City 5, Burlington 4

  • Charlie Tilson with another extra-base hit today as he went 3-4 with a double
  • David Washington had a double as his sole hit in 4 at-bats
  • Breyvic Valera led off and finished 2-5. He was caught stealing
  • Tyler Rahmatulla was hitless in 5 plate appearances
  • Hector Garcia went 2-3 with a double and walk
  • Matt Williams stole his 20th base
  • Jesus Montero added to the double parade with 1 and went 2-4
  • Juan Bautista had an impressive 6:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, but he also gave up 4 runs off of 2 homers and 5 combined hits in 5 innings. He threw a wild pitch and hit 3 batters and yet didn’t walk a batter

With Wong and Tilson added to the mix, Cox finally starting to show some power, Adams looking at 30/100 year and Taveras just hitting everything in site our hitting seems to be making a late season push to be as interesting as our pitching.

what an incredible season for taveras..22 hits in his last 10 games! it is too bad he hasn’t played enough to win the batting championship because he certainly deserves it..what a difference that quad cities offense is now from earlier in the year

also great start to tilson’s professional career

    • Tackle Box says:

I’m really starting to get excited about seeing Quad Cities next year. If I’m right, they should have Tilson, Whittels. Rahmatula, Jenkins, and Hernandez. Should be a pretty good club.

      • And maybe Kyle Hald add to that mix also!

      • cariocacardinal says:

I’ll bet money that Tilson is not on the QC opening day roster. He’ll start in EST. He may or may not start in QC when finally assigned to a club.

but don’t worry, in addition to the above, you should get De La Cruz and Garcia. Matt Williams is intriguing as well.

Personally not sold that Whittels is any more than an interesting story but who knows.

        • Tackle Box says:

I’m just curios how Whittels will hit at the next level. Undoubtedly, the kid has talent. I just want to see him hit at full season ball.

And I forgot about De La Cruz. He will definitely be an interesting guy to keep an eye on.

Would the AFL be out of the question for a guy like Tilson?

With Texas looking closely at Berkman, what kind of prospect could we expect back? Could we expect someone like Jurickson Profar, or would that be too much for a rental?

    • Tackle Box says:

I don’t know enough about Texas’ minor leagues (other than they are very rich with talent) to make an educated guess on return, however the fact that Berkman is a Type A FA in the National League and actually ranks higher in the list in the American League (i.e., he’s more of a shoe-in for Type A classification) leads me to believe the Cardinals could ask for quite a nice package.

As much as both sides seem to want his return in St. Louis next year, if they end up trading him it obviously doesn’t mean he won’t return, but I do see his Type A status being a major roadblock to that reunion.

I suppose it’s possible the Cards could work out a deal that almost guaranteed him returning but that would include Texas compensating St. Louis for the loss of the 1st round draft pick in exchange for a month+ of Berkman. Now, it might actually be worth it if the Rangers win the World Series with Berkman. That’s a risk they’d have to be willing to consider.

    • Shanky says:

Profar is definitely the big name in their system, but I doubt they’ll part with him for a rental. They also have a nice 3B prospect in Mike Olt, but with Cox, Carpenter and Freese in the system I don’t think that’s a match. No matter how unlikely, Profar would be a stunning addition to our system.

    • bc says:

No way they’re giving up Profar.

      • Indiana Cardinal says:

I agree there is no way they would give up Profar, either for a month of Berkman, or probably in any trade. However the Rangers system is loaded.

They have another two excellent SS’s from Latin America, Luis Sardinas and Leury Garcia. They have a catcher Jorge Alfaro who also is a potential stud. Many others.

All of this discussion leads me to ask whether anyone knows when the Cards decide to take the $ or the 3 PTBNL from Toronto. They also have an excellent farm system and you could exclude their top 20 and easily come up with 3 very interesting prospects from #21 and beyond.

  4. Bob says:

If I were Texas, Profar would be borderline untouchable…unless Berkman would agree in advance to a deal for 2012 at <$10M…and the Redbirds also included a mid-level guy like, say, Rosenthal or Tommy Pham in the deal.

    • Hugecardsfan says:

That makes no sense to me. We give up our shot at Berkman for next year, not knowing if Albert will be back, we give up a pitcher we’re pretty high on, and we give up 2 supplemental picks and we get a SS that might help us in 3 years? What does Texas have on Mo?

I’m sorry, but Texas is the one with a need here. They can either pony up or look elsewhere.

      • Pierce says:

I can guarantee you that the Cardinals and any other team in baseball would give up a month of Berkman and the 2 draft picks assuming he turns down arbitration + Rosenthal for Profar. Profar is a consensus top 2 shortstop prospect in baseball and some even like him more than Machado. Texas wouldn’t do that, though.

        • Hugecardsfan says:

No offense but I don’t think you can guarantee me that. Berkman likely figures into our 2011 plans. Profar is an exciting prospect to be sure. But, too far away to warrant Berkman, Rosenthal and 2 supplementals. There won’t be a trade and it won’t be because Texas doesn’t want it.

In the final analysis it’s likely because Berkman doesn’t want to go.
