The Cardinals have struggled this year at shortstop. They’ve seen six different players accrue time at the shortstop position. Veterans Nick Punto, Ryan Theriot and now Rafael Furcal have all manned the key defensive position and farm products Pete Kozma, Daniel Descalso and Tyler Greene have as well. Combined they have hit .255/.316/.330 and shown what could be generously described as porous defense.

The Cardinals will have some decisions to make as the year progresses and rosters expand in September. One such decision is whether to free Tyler Greene or not.

Shelby Miller will make a start tonight against the 32nd overall pick out of the 2008 draft, Jake Odorizzi.  Odorizzi’s transition from A ball to the Texas League has been a bit of a mixed bag as his strikeout rate has dropped against better hitters in a hitter friendly league.

I’m a little busy at the moment but cariocacardinal made a comment a few weeks ago about being more interested in, shall we say, less prominent starters. The hidden gems, if you will.

Memphis rocked Kyle Drabek for the system’s only win on the night.  Eric Fornataro was good for Palm Beach in a losing effort and Johnson City lost in the 16th inning despite Gary Apelian’s stellar day.  Let’s get to the details.

Last night Matt Adams pelted his 29th and 30th homeruns to first tie and then exceed the record set by Colby Rasmus in 2007.  I’ve written about Adams with some frequncey here and I think it’s safe to say that he’s a controversial prospect among readers.

Adams jumped two levels from a full year in Quad Cities to spend the full season in Springfield.  Admittedly, Springfield is a hitter’s park in a hitter’s league but there’s little argument that Adams is having a heck of a year.  With 30 HRs and an ISO hovering near .300, Adams is a legitimate first base prospect — probably the best one the Cardinals have had since Albert Pujols.
