Brandon Dickson’s outing yesterday was an example of what minor league call-ups can be about, especially for guys who rely heavily on off-speed stuff. The first time through the order, the success is greater because of the newness factor. Yet, with each look the opponent gets at you, the more likely they are to either square up the bad ones or lay off the good ones. Still, Dickson did exactly what I expected from him and I’m sorry he didn’t last long enough to notch a W.

Joe Kelly had a 15-1 ground outs to fly outs…most impressive
yep that stood out to me also..watched the game on milb.tv..dave duncan would of been in heaven watching it
I love wong
Care to rephrase that?
I too was encouraged by the Dickson outing, especially the effectiveness of his knucklecurve as an out pitch.
Nice to see PB win. Springfield did great with all the backup players they won the game.
Can we get a “move Stock to the pen” bullhorn somewhere? His hitting has been “better” this season, but it’s just not for him.
I don’t know if I would move him to the pen at this point. A defense first backup catcher who can be your emergency pitcher might not be a bad thing and we have a large number or right handed arms in the system who profile as relievers. There is no clear successor to Yadi right now in the system and we have no great need for right handed relief arms in the lower minors so I support the organization keeping Stock as a catcher for now. Motte made it to AA before the conversion so they could give Stock a shot at Springfield next year while still leaving the pitching window open just a crack.
What makes you think Stock plays good defense. I’ve heard he’s weak fundamentally.
0 passed balls and 2 errors with a 31% SB percentage in 56 games
I have never heard that from a reliable source.

JC evened their playoff series at a game apiece. If they win the next game they advance to the championship series, with a chance to win back-to-back league titles.
It was Hald’s first win in the postseason, but he had a bunch during the regular season. He was named to the league’s all-star team as the lefthanded starter. (Rahmatulla is also on the team at second base.)
Comically, no one from QC made the MWL postseason all stars, according to Brian Walton:
http://www.foxsportsmidwest.com/09/01/11/Springfields-Matt-Adams-is-in-contention/landing_stlcardinals.html?blockID=557460
I say “comically” because, as of today, they have the best overall winning % in the league at .590. That’s first out of 16 teams.
Then again, I haven’t compared the guys who made it with the QC guys who didn’t. Just seems weird that OT, even with all the time missed, wouldn’t be one of the league’s 3 best outfielders.
The midwest league all star list is sketchy at best. In the outfield Marisnick and Lirano are both excellent players but Crouse I really have my doubts on. Tavares suffers because there are a lot of good MWL outfielders…Marisnick is one of my favorite players I saw all year.
Outside of the outfielders that list has a lot of players that are org fillers. Whitaker and Aguilar are all hit no field. Brantly is a solid catcher that might pull it together, he was decent. The middle infielders are all glove no hit guys…I cant imagine who voted for Perez. How about the Deitrich kid from Bowling Green that jacked 21 home runs “playing” short? If Wong had played all year he easily was the best middle infielder I saw.
I dont think any of the pitchers make it off that list. Riefenhauser has the best shot.
I think it’s ridiculous that Taveras doesn’t make that list. Irrespective of his injuries, no one has managed the bat better than he has. Doubtless Marisnick is a more complete player but that is a very short list to preclude Taveras’ inclusion.
no doubt…Lirano, Marisnick, and Taveras are the best three in the league. They were the best players I saw all year. Lirano and Taveras are pro corner outfielders in the making and Marisnick is a prototype centerfielder.
One thing that kinda scared me after thinking about this is that it was a down year for pitching in the MWL. It was just a pit-stop for the best pitchers that came through, no one stayed long.
They really don’t get much respect at all.
Just to put it out there, Dickson didn’t get a whole fair shake. He was pitched on 3 days rest and the ump hosed him with the first batter of the 4th inning. That 3-2 pitch was in the zone and certainly higher than the dirt strikeout call that Gallardo got just a half inning earlier. A bunch of us over at the stlcardinals.com board agreed that was ridiculous.
I liked what I saw from Dickson. He got rattled for a bit and had some pretty hard hit foul balls but he settled down with 4 consecutive strikeouts (3 official, 1 was a no-call as I just mentioned). Tony also was very quick with the hook. No vet would have been anywhere close to being pulled. It is unfortunate that a few factors outside of Dickson’s control were major contributing factors to his shortened outing.
I hope he gets some September outings while with the big club. I’d like to see more of him.
In defense of LaRussa, working with any pitcher on short rest means the leash should be short. I would have been more upset if he didn’t have short rest and he pulled him. I have no issue with what he did.
He was there for a reason, to eat innings, not to get hurt.
Either way, looks good for him, they covered his start in Memphis and I hope he gets to use his innings well.
BTW, they get hosed all of the time and they don’t use that as an excuse so we shouldn’t either. :)
@zuke- i really love Wong?
Pretend you have no idea who he was and reread your post.
“I really like seeing Wong in action.”?
I love to see Wong go deep.
well at least he doesn’t love cox…ok had to say it haha
We are indeed fortunate that the Cards bats came out to play against the Brewers.
@zuke- c’mon man, clearly I realize what I was saying, which is why I phrased it like I did
I cannot wait to watch Wong
