So, I guess I totally overlooked Lyons during the season. Looking at his line he had a reasonably solid first full season last year at Palm Beach. A touch old for the league. I’m guessing they were limiting his innings during the season? Does anyone know if he project to stick as a starter? LOOGY possibilities? Sending him to Arizona seems to be a vote of confidence that he is ready to be in AA (possibly the rotation) to begin next year??? Anybody that has seen him have any thoughts?
I have read a couple scouting reports on him and they both basically said the same the things about him: His fastball is in the 84-87 range, his curve is his best pitch and a 12-6 one at 78-80 mph, he has a change that is good sometimes, basically if he can or has improved that, that would be his ticket to being a starter, likely a back end type if he does. The one comp I did see for him was they thought he would end up as a middle reliever similar to J.P Howell, which considering he was drafted in the 9th rd last year, would be pretty happy with that or back end starter.
Lyons was drafted in the 10th round by the Yankees the year before the Cards took him. Went back to school because he felt he was going through a dead arm period and his velocity was down in the 84-87 range. Velocity did improve some what and he got it up as high as 91 last year. He seems to be a little undersized at 6′ as a lot of the Cards later round pitchers have been lately. Like what he has been doing in the Fall league so far. Seems to be holding his own better than the other pitching prospects we have in the AFL.
Good to hear his velocity came back up as the scouting reports I read were for ’09 and early 2010.
