Well Taveras and Adams started walking more at exactly the same time. Is that a coincidence? Also Adams walking means he wasn't jumping on the first pitch fastballs that he crushed at the beginning of the yaer. (His issue wasn't going out of the zone, it was swinging early in counts on balls in the zone) That either means the pitchers decided to not pitch to him and pitch around him or he was told to work on working the walk and not hitting early pitches. You can obviously make your own choice about what happened but it seems more than a coincidence to me.

Good question. Then again, what does it matter? That he is walking more should be an indicator unto itself.

Yeah but totally different style. Take Tavares swing and give it to Matt Adams then you would get closer. Holes in swings don't bother me too much, come on lets describe what the pitcher has to do to get him out. He needs to be able to consistently throw a breaking ball down and in for a strike. Even if Adams doesnt adjust his swing and just learns to lay-off the pitch it is a tough assignment.

Other than the fact that he did start walking more is there any evidence that he actually was making a conscious effort to do so?

When I saw him live during the AA season I never noticed the hole down & in and I dont know if this was because most AA pitchers tried not to pitch him inside or what. However he did have tenedency to chase alot of low and outside pitches but he murdered anything middle-in.

There are a plethora of bad body 1B who have had great careers. I'm not so worried about his size as that he is able to make adjustments as he moves up the ladder and maintain his power. The power is what makes him intriguing. Gotta love that swing though. Quiet. Compact. Head remains fixed. I'd like to read what our swing analyst (the guy who was posting swing analysis over at vivaelbirdos) has to say about the Adams swing.

His issues were never swinging at pitches out of the zone. His low walk rate had more to do with jumping on early fastballs and hitting the ball hard. He is very good at only swinging at good hitters pitches. Because of this he rarely walks as he hit the ball so well this year. When he consciously started to work on taking more walks that is when his average dropped so much.

This is not the right post, but definitely the right forum...but I took a certain added satisfaction from last night that when Craig caught the last out, 7 of the 9 players on the field were drafted by the Cardinals. That was special.
