Jaime Garcia has the best day in the minors but that seems like cheating so I’ll point you towards Sam Gaviglio’s line. There were lots of high powered offense lines today but Xavier Scruggs 3-homerun game takes the win. Greg Garcia continues to hit as well.
Memphis 4, New Orleans 3
- Jaime Garcia pitched 6 innings striking out 7 and walking no one. He allowed 4 hits and 2 runs (1 earned).
- Jess Todd pitched a perfect frame striking out 1.
- Eduardo Sanchez struck out 2 in his inning of work.
- Steve Hill hit 2 homers.
- Mark Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Hamilton’s been in the organization since being drafted in 2006.
- Zack Cox doubled and walked twice.
Springfield 7, Jacksonville 10
- John Gast allowed 6 hits in 5 innings. He struck out 3 and walked 1 for 4 ER. After Nick Additon, Gast has advanced the furthest of current left-handed starting prospects within the Cardinals system.
- Xavier Scruggs hit 3 homeruns in today’s game. Game notes indicate he was working all fields as well with one to right field, left field and right centerfield.
- Greg Garcia was 3-for-4 with a triple and a homerun.
- Kolten Wong doubled and walked twice.
Palm Beach 3, Jupiter 3
- Zach Russell pitched 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 runs (1 earned). He struck out 4.
- Danny Miranda pitched a pair of perfect innings striking out 2.
- Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a homerun. I think Rodriguez was a little overlooked in 2010. He put together strong numbers in the MWL with a .389 OBP and a .221 ISO. The question for him moving forward will be what position he’ll play. Likely limited to either 1B or the corner outfields — though 3B isn’t completely a lost cause — he’ll have to keep producing offensively to make the majors.
- Chris Edmondson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Quad Cities #1 5, Greensboro 0
- Sam Gaviglio pitched 4 innings allowing no hits and 1 walk. He struck out 2. Gaviglio intrigues me in as much as he’s a first day draft pick and mainly gets by on his sinker. Keep an eye on his groundball rate this year.
- Ricky Martinez and Jose Pasen each pitched a pair of scoreless frames allowing 1 hit. Pasen struck out 1.
- Ryan Copeland pitched 1 inning allowing 1 hit.
- Roberto DeLaCruz and Colin Walsh went 2-for-4 with a double.
- Adam Lewis was 2-for-3.
- Nick Martini was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Quad Cities #2 9, Jamestown 3
- Dail Villanueva was knocked around in his 3.2 IP allowing 6 hits and 3 ER. He struck out 4 and walked 1.
- Ramon Ulacio pitched 2 innings allowing 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
- Ethan Cole struck out 3 in 2 innings of work with 1 walk.
- Gary Apelian hit a homerun in a 2-for-3 effort.
- Casey Rasmus was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles.
- David Washington was 1-for-2 with a homerun.
- Jeremy Patton was 2-for-5.

Big day on the farm, performance-wise and elsewhere. Cody Stanley popped for 50 games. Apparently he’s been juicing…http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120327&content_id=27673014&vkey=news_stl&c_id=stl
And masking. Busted for both.
Maybe he was partying with the first drug, and was afraid he was gonna be pregnant so he took the Tamoxifen as the morning after pill, haha.
Underrated prospect to keep an eye on this year……..Greg Garcia.
Also I don’t think there is any way Jonathan Rodriquez can play a corner OF position.
Garcia can hit but no power according to his stats last season. He’s got a nice OBP.
If Garcia and Wong play in Springfield, who plays where? Aren’t both 2B now? Or will Garcia go back to SS?
Garcia has been playing shortstop.
You must be referring to this spring. Garcia has 114 games at 2B and only 42 at SS.
He has been playing SS in the Spring, also last Spring he also played SS while Starlin Rodriquez was at 2b in Palm Beach.
According to Baseball Reference….At Quad Cities, Garcia played 29 games at 2B and 18 at SS. At Palm Beach, that split shifted drastically toward 2nd base–Garcia played only 8 games at SS while playing 2B 38 games. The other shortstops at Palm Beach last year were Ted Obregon (55 games), Dominit Bolivar (57 games), and Ronald Ramirez (34 games). As Huge pointed out, so far in his short pro career in the Cardinals system, Garcia has been primarily a second-baseman, while doing some back-up work at short. Not sure if that’s more for development as a utility player by exposing him to a different position, or if they simply don’t see him as a shortstop.
The fielding stats might be a bit off, though–BR has Rodriquez playing 45 games under his batting stats, but only 29 games (all at 2B) under his fielding stats.
My player to watch this year is Matt Williams he has some nice speed stole 20 bags and hit 293. 6 HR 25 RBI in 228 AB.
Matt Williams was great with the Giants.
Hope this one is better!!
I recall the upper levels of the 2011 draft as position player-heavy. Was gaviglio the best pitcher of the cards’ 2011 deaft?
Yes he was. Drafted in the 5th round.
Unless you count the Serrano Latin “draft”…. ;o)
I think people are sleeping on Jonathan Rodriguez, as a hitter (seems like a 1B only guy, IMO). He had a higher wOBAr last year at QC than Taveras did. Rod’s wOBAr was the 2nd highest in the Midwest L, among those with more than 300 PAs.
Rodriguez is a great hitting prospect IMO; however, he has a lot of work to do around the bag. His footwork is suspect and so is his glove. His hitting is definitely NOT suspect……where he can play on the field is.
I still feel de la Cruz is a bust, but this is a make or break year for him
Hard to see how RDLC is a bust, or that this year is make or break. The kid was 19 in JC last year, and had the highest ISO in the organization, among those with > 200 PAs. He’d be entering his sophomore year if he were a college player, and not even yet eligible to be drafted. Let’s save the “bust” labels for guys who never pan out, not guys who are age appropriate (or young) for their league and have shown at least one standout tool. Sure, he needs to work on taking a walk – color me thoroughly unsurprised that a young latin player needs to work on his patience.
Hard to have a make or “break” year when you have already been determined to be a “bust”. I would say it is an important year for him to progress, as it is for virtually every player in the farm system.
He’s listed as a 1st baseman now. De La Cruz that is.
Unfortunate about Stanley
Haven’t seen Oscar Taveras in one of these DFRs for a while. Is he really scuffling, dinged up, or is it no longer noteworthy unless he hits a bomb or collects three hits?
He’s getting 2 AB’s and then taking a Golf Cart over to the Major League diamond for the second half of games. He doesn’t get many AB’s anymore.
Hey guys – no need to publish this comment, just wanted to let you know Copeland did not give up a hit yesterday in his inning. 1 IP, 0 BB, 0 H… thanks!!! xo Steph
A little feeling of pride is certainly allowed here, Steph. ;-)
hahaha! im most proud of the no walks part – thats his forte! xo
Who is Chris Edmondson? I know he is an OF who was a late round pick in 2010 from a small college. He seems to have done pretty well in a half season at rookie levels in 2010 and a slightly better than .800 OPS last year at Quad Cities. He seems to show up frequently in a positive way in these reports.
Which OF spot does he play and does anyone have any insights on his fielding, speed and generally on him? Thanks.
I see that he will be 24 shortly, and I would expect that he will start the season at Palm Beach. That may be a little old for that level. Has anyone seen him play?
I can’t wait to see what Kolten Wong can do over a full season.
I was pretty underwhelmed by the pick on Draft Day, but I must admit I’ve done a complete 180 since then.
kolten is a complete player – literally a hard working professional on and off the field. you guys are very lucky to have him in your system!
Hope you guys are right about de la Cruz….I’m just not seeing it
I don’t think anyone’s predicting ML success for RDLC, just not calling him a bust or saying this is a make or break year.
Indeed, if I were predicting “busts,” I’d just predict that they will all be busts, and then I’ll be right 90% of the time.
