Brett Wallace goes 2-for-4 against his former team drawing a walk and doubling. Oklahoma City would go on to cream Memphis as Maikel Cleto suffered through a significant blowup. In the low minors, Quad Cities would throttle their opposition behind LHP Hector Hernandez.

Memphis 3, Oklahoma City 12

  • Adron Chambers and Ryan Jackson went 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Matt Adams went 2-for-5 with a double and his second HR of the season.
  • Amaury Cazana Marti went 2-for-4.
  • Brian Broderick got blasted in his start allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 4 in 4 innings.
  • Adam Reifer held the opposition down during the 5th and 6th inning stranding an inherited runner for Broderick. Reifer struck out 2 and walked 2.
  • Maikel Cleto was lit up as he failed to retire a batter. He allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 3 hits and 2 walks.
  • Nick Greenwood would finish the game out pitching 2 innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 3. While Sam Freeman is often the first lefty reliever mentioned from the minors, Greenwood has quietly and quickly ascended the ranks after being acquired in the Ryan Ludwick/Jake Westbrook trade.

Springfield 4, Frisco 1

  • Kolten Wong was 3-for-4 with a pair of triples.
  • Niko Vasquez was 0-for-1 with a pair of walks.
  • Nick Derba was 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Oscar Taveras was 1-for-4 playing centerfield (take note doubters) and picked up an outfield assist gunning down a runner at second base.
  • John Gast pitched 7 strong innings striking out 7. He allowed just 3 hits and 1 ER on a solo homerun. He walked 1 and, yes, he picked a man off of first accourding to the box score.
  • Keith Butler pitched a 1 hit, 1 strikeout scoreless frame.
  • Jorge Rondon picked up the save allowing a pair of hits in a scoreless ninth.

Palm Beach 3, Jupiter 7

  • Starlin Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • It was a quiet debut for the PB offense who tallied just 4 singles besides the pair by Rodriguez.
  • Seth Maness went 7 innings allowing 5 hits and striking out 4 batters. Impressively, he walked no one though he allowed 2 runs (1 earned).
  • Aidan Lucas came on in the 8th and quickly got into a heap of trouble retiring only one batter before being pulled. He allowed 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks.
  • Chase Reid got the team out of the 8th and pitched a scoreless 9th before unraveling in the 10th. He would be responsible for 2 of the 4 runs in the 10th while Dean Kiekhefer would be saddled with the other 2 (1 earned).

Quad Cities 8, Kane County 0

  • Matt Williams and Nick Martini went 1-for-4 with a walk.
  • Roberto de la Cruz was 2-for-5.
  • Colin Walsh was 0-for-2 with a trio of walks. The question with Walsh is more where does his bat play than if it can play. He can hit but he lacks an obvious position.
  • Juan Castillo was 3-for-4.
  • Hector Hernandez was stellar striking out 6 in 6 scoreless innings. He allowed just 5 hits and no walks.
  • Logan Billbrough struck out the side while allowing 2 hits in a scoreless inning.
  • Heath Wyatt struck out 2 and allowed 1 hit in the 9th.

    For the record:

Nope. RT @NorbertoPaulino: @Kevin_Goldstein Oscar Taveras played CF today could he cut it there?— Kevin Goldstein (@Kevin_Goldstein) April 6, 2012

    • Cardinals645 says:

Though it would make it easier for the Cardinals to fit him, Craig, and Adams into the same lineup in 2014.

    • azruavatar says:

I’ve heard that before — and Goldstein isn’t the only one that thinks that — but I don’t think it’s that clear cut. When I saw him play CF last year, I didn’t come away with such a definitive impression.

    • Scadder21 says:

Your giving Goldstein more stock than the Cardinals Minor League staff. He doesn’t know Cardinal prospects well obviously from him downplaying Rosenthal. The Cardinals are going to have him in CF from now on I believe until he proves he can’t play there.

      • Cardinals645 says:

I’m just pointing out that there are experts that don’t think he can do it. And KG gets his info from MLB scouts, so it’s not just his opinion. That said, he could still be wrong. Also, we don’t know for sure that Taveras is playing CF right now because that’s where the Cardinals staff sees him playing in the majors; he could be playing there for any number of reasons.

        • Andrew says:

He was playing in CF during Spring also before Pham’s injury. And Vuch has said they would like to have him in CF until he shows that he can’t.

          • Cardinals645 says:

Hadn’t heard that. Could just mean they’d like him to try, even if they don’t find it likely, which I think would make a lot of sense. I haven’t seen him play so idk if he’s likely to make it or not. I hope so. I still think he’s probably just covering until Pham takes the field again (I was wondering why he was DHing). What’s Pham’s injury?

            • Andrew says:

Seperated Shoulder. I think Pham once he comes back if he hits well will be moved up to Memphis.

Why would you only play Taveras in CF, when he’s more valuable as a prospect if he can stick in CF. Those type of things you don’t give up so quickly.

              • Seals says:

It’s much like giving a college reliever a shot in the rotation. Taveras might not stick in centerfield but there’s nothing wrong with looking at him in center for a few games.

  2. BigJawnMize says:

I am taking note and doubting that Taveras is a center fielder in the show. That said I am all for trying it out. Having seen him play a couple times he is a good athlete and can hold his own at the position, it is just that major league center fielders are kinda freaky athletes.

    • Scadder21 says:

Jon Jay? He’s not a freak athlete.

I went to the game today. Great game by Hernandez and the bullpen. DLC looked a lot better at 1st though I still think he’s going to rip his groin in half on the stretch. He’s not very flexible.

Nick Martini is a Poor Man’s Charlie Tilson and is current a better player. Tyler Rahmutulla also is continuing to impress me with the stick.

      • BigJawnMize says:

True on Jay, but he does read the ball off the bat really well; gets good jumps on the ball; has good baseball instincts; and has a good head for baseball. I am not one to do a Jay/Rasmus comparison, but Rasmus is a better athlete but generally a weaker CF because of the mental aspect of the game. (See wasn’t that a PC way of saying Colby is a headcase.) One of the big problems in scouting is how do you scout headcases. It is basically impossible. So you have to take it on

From what I have seen Taveras is a solid athlete but but didn’t read the ball particularly well off the bat. I still think his arm plays in Center or Right, not a cannon but serviceable. Taveras as a CF is not a run saver on defense but serviceable.

    • Tackle Box says:

      Completely agree.

He’s definitely a corner outfielder although I’m not sold yet that his arm is ML right field. But he’s definitely a corner outfielder. Plus, I envision him filling out more as he matures which will cut down on his centerfielder-ness.

    • tom s. says:

like pushing some potential relievers to start until they prove they can’t, i hope they keep pushing taveras to play in center until he shows he can’t.

  3. illinoiscardinalfan says:

Matt Adam on pace for 144 hr this year in AAA.

  4. tom s. says:

how about john gast throwing so many strikeouts? hope we see a lot more of that. i also love the lines from maness and hernandez.

two triples from wong? that just seems too good to be true.

  5. Chris says:

One more note on Maness: He got 16 GB outs and 0 FB outs.

  6. cariocacardinal says:

Forget Adams’ HR’s – until he takes a walk he’s no good! :)

  7. Jeffery says:

I was at the Springfield game. The assist for Taveras was on a pop up that noboby could decide on who was going to catch it. So they got a force out at second.

Taveras is playing center field until Pham starts playing the field. I believe he has a shoulder issue.

Gast looked very good. He started getting the ball up in the seventh. That was when Olt took him deep.

Wong is just a very good ballplayer. He has made some really good plays in the field both games. He is already becoming a fan favorite after two games. Both of his triples were to right center and drove in the first 3 runs of the game. Taveras followed Wong’s second triple with a double to left center.

The wind was blowing in for the second straight night with the temps in the 50′s or Taveras double would had been a home run.

Rondon scares me everytime he pitches. The first two batters got base hits then the third hit a rope to first that Scruggs turn into a doulbe play.

Scruggs has looked very good at first base the first two games. He has saved Jose Garcia at least three errors. I was hoping to see Greg Garcia at short but Jose has played there both games. Jose had a lot of problems last year with his throws.

Can’t make the next two games, but I will be there again on Monday night. I think overall Springfield will be a better team than last year. I have really enjoyed watching Wong so far. Like I said just a very good all around ballplayer.

    • Scadder21 says:

Pham won’t be in the field till at least the 19th. He may get some CF time but I really believe that the organization wants to try Taveras out in CF. He’s still very young so he can improve a lot. I’ve never liked Rondon much and I’m not sure why the organization still has him around. Jose Garcia had 2 throwing errors in the game against STL. It’s behind me why he’s starting over Greg Garcia.

    • nmstar says:

I was at the game last night too. I would add these notes to what Jeffrey said:

Taveras didn’t look good at all against the Frisco lefty starter. He got his double of a rightly reliever (absolutely crushed to center) and then was picked off by the catcher after straying too far of second.

Rosario also looked very bad at the plate. He didn’t seem to be picking up the ball very against the starter either.

  8. Hugecardsfan says:

Hernandez only pitched 5 not 6 innings. He did have 6 K’s, however.

    Really nice game by Gast.

Love to see Wong tattooing the ball.

  9. solar pons says:

Thanks to all of the posters for the reports. The future looks very bright for Cards fans.. Second Huge, good start for Gast..

  10. bc says:

When do we hear about Cleto’s injury? He’s looked bad from the beginning of ST.

  11. Cards fan in Chitown #2 says:

Does anyone know why it seems like Shelby hasn’t pitched in what seems like a very long while?

  12. Andrew says:

    He’s pitching tomorrow
