As yesterday’s poll indicated, strong starting pitching was the theme of the day. The organization saw very strong performances from all four starting pitchers, though the bullpen let Memphis down. Nice to see a dominant-ish outing from Jenkins. Anyone know how deficient he was (pitch count)?
That is supposed to read efficient, not deficient
I think I read 60 pitches somewhere….
Nevermind–I see the answer in the last thread.
Also from the last thread, a commenter mentioned that Gast throw in the mid-90s. When did the uptick in velocity take place? He was low-90s in college and when drafted was coming off TJ. If he’s really mid-90s, then I go from like to love regarding him as a prospect
I find that very hard to believe. I saw him pitch in spring training last season and he was about 88-91 with the fastball. It’s not that uncommon to add velocity during the season, but I’d be shocked if he throws anywhere near that hard.
I was at Gast’s game in Springfield this year. Low 90′s.
Last year in Springfield Low 90′s.
Keep in mind Springfield’s gun is notoriously hot. Gast legitimately sits 88-92 with his fastball, and can reach back for a few more mph’s when he needs them.
Gast’s arm strength is one of his best traits.
FWIW, Springfield’s gun when Rosenthal pitched was actually 3 mph slow. It was kind of damp and had been raining, so I don’t know if that was an issue or not. It was in comparision to the guns the guys who were charting had. So, I’m not sure the stadium gun there is consistently one way or another.
Wong was 1-3. I hate seeing his average go down. Hope its not a trend that continues.
1-3 with a walk or Wong…that kid gives me warm tingly feelings
I think he was throwing 93 in Spring. 91-93 for a lefty is very good. I’m happy with it.
Ok…that’s more in line with what I was thinking. 92 is plenty for a lefty of he hits his spots and has some wiggle.
95 would be awesome though
Very nice pitching night for starting pitchers..They sure are treating Jenkins with kid gloves though right now
Am I the only one amazed by Seth Maness? The guy has pitched 20 innings of quality baseball and still hasn’t walked a batter. I find that pretty amazing.
I think he only walked 5 batters all of last year.
Wow.
Let’s see: Kelly pitched very well at AAA. Gast was outstanding at AA. Seth Maness was excellent at high A and Jenkins was unhittable at QC.
Adams got the only RBI at Memphis. Wong had a triple and Taveras a double. Matt Williams got on base twice, going 1 for 3.
Ain’t life grand.
