Only two games tonight. Memphis won its third game out of the past four thanks to an early offensive attack led by The Legend. Shelby Miller struggled with his control but compensated by missing bats. Matt Adams hit another double. Ho-hum. Quad Cities overcame a blown save to salvage an extra inning win in crazy fashion. Details after the jump…
- Skip Schumaker, Ryan Jackson, and Amaury Cazana all went 2-for-4, but Cazana’s hits included a double and 3 RBIs.
- Zack Cox and Matt Adams had identical nights going 1-for-4 with a double and 2 strike outs. Cox’s hit produced an RBI.
- Cedric Hunter walked twice.
- Shelby Miller allowed a lot of base runners (5 hits, 4 walks) in 5 innings, but compensated by tallying 9 strike outs. The 1 ER he allowed came on a solo home run.
- Nick Greenwood was not particularly effective tonight. He allowed 2 ER on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 0 strike outs.
- R. J. Swindle only retired 1 batter. He allowed 2 hits, one of which was a solo homer. Chuckie Fick retired two batters to end the inning.
- Just when I thought Eduardo Sanchez was going to pitch an efficient 9th inning after getting the first two guys outs on 6 pitches, he allowed a run with a hit-by-pitch and double. He induced a pop fly to 3B to end the game.
- Anthony Garcia was 2-for-3 with a double and walk.
- Nick Martini went 2-for-4 (both singles) with 2 walks. One of his walks came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning. Yes, a walk-off-walk. The other 3 base runners also reached via walks.
- Tyler Rahmatulla was 1-for-4 with a walk, but his hit was a solo homer.
- Juan Castillo went 1-for-5 with a double that scored the tying run in the 9th inning.
- Luis Mateo both had 2 singles.
- Hector Hernandez pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 2 ER that included 4 hits (1 HR), and 3 walks. Hernandez relied heavily on his defense tonight as he only recorded 1 strike out.
- Ethan Cole pitched well other than allowing an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch in the 7th inning. He followed that up with a perfect 8th inning. He went 1.2 IP with 2 strike outs.
- Heath Wyatt was responsible for the blown save. He allowed 2 runs. Although neither of the runs were earned (error by Luis Mateo allowed both runs to score), Wyatt still was at fault for a HBP and balk. He was bailed out of the inning when an opposing player was caught trying to steal home.
- Danny Miranda restored order with a scoreless 10th inning that included a strike out.

Watched some of Millers game. He wasn’t hit hard at all but had some wildness issues. He gave up a HR in the 3rd, and got into and out of trouble with his control but ultimately got out of it. I like when starters are left in to try to clean up their own messes. Good job by Miller today.
Hernandez also pitched well. He gave up his first earned run of the season in the top of the 7th with a home run. He recorded and out and then walked 2 guys. Ethan Cole came in and got the 2nd out but then a WP scored Hernandez’s second run.
Interested in where Hernandez is listened in terms of pitchers on everyones prospect list. He has always had good stuff but really struggled last year at Batavia. He’s obviously stepped it up a notch. He’s one of my Top 10 pitchers in the organization.
Top 10 org pitchers? Miller, Martinez, Jenkins, rosenthal, Kelly, Sanchez, swagerty, gast, cleto, . . . I think you could put whiting, Hernandez, maness, Lyons, and any number of guys in the back end of that list with a straight face. I’m excluding Lynn b/c if he hasn’t exceeded his rookie innings count he will soon.
I thought he had exceeded the number of days spent on the roster anyway.
I thought hernandez had better stuff than that 2nd tier of pitchers. He’s closer to kelly, gast, swagerty than the others you grouped him with I think, not to mention about younger than them. Whiting could end up in the same tier if he were healthy this year.
Is whiting hurt?
I haven’t heard what is up with Whiting, but I believe he did start the season on some sort of reserve list if not the DL – but I don’t know why.
Per the Scout.com Cardinals site on April 3 he has a forearm flexor strain and is on the DL. On that date they said he did not expect to have a lengthy downtime but would then need time to ramp up once he was cleared for throwing.
I have not seen any subsequent report on him.
oh yeah – Matt Adams is Prospect of the Day over at John Sickels’ Minor League Ball.
Lynn has actually exceeded the number of innings he can pitch this good on the major league roster and will soon be called up to the all galaxy league.
Good to see a good outing for Miller. Other than his command he looked good. If Miller can become a more polished pitcher he will be in the MLB this season.
I sure hope not. Miller needs a structured promotion. There’s just no reason to put him in the majors this year. I don’t think we’ll need someone from Memphis in 2012, but, if it happens I’d be more inclined to promote Dickson or Kelly (a ground ball machine) – rather than Miller.
