All the big guns are an the docket today.
Yesterday we asked which of the four starters would have the most groundouts. The 53% of you who guessed groundout machine Joe Kelly were right. Kelly recorded 8 groundouts – two more than either Drew Benes or Tyrell Jenkins.

Definitely a line-up that will result in multiple box score reads………
Rosenthal takes on the $7 Million Dollar man tonight. I’m going to guess the $92K man is the better value :)
With Rosenthal pitching tonight it would appear he is on schedule to pitch Sunday in Tulsa, correct? Are they on a five man rotation? Just making sure there isn’t something funky with their rotation. Thanks in advance.
That is correct……I think you will like what you see – either way, I hope you will give us an eye witness recap if you go….I will look forward to it.
Will do my best, but my 5 year old will be in attendance as well, so that may be difficult.
How about Monday? I think I will be at that game.
Who is the 7 million dollar man?
Noel Arguelles from the Royals.
Yeah, Argie was a hot commodity Cuban defector. As soon as he got the money he went down for TJ. Brilliant.
He got paid that much? WOW!
Isn’t that the type of signing you think the Cards should have been doing? $7 million for immediate TJ surgery?
When have I ever said that? Bryce Harper didn’t even get paid that much. If it was Giolito and it was 3 I would be ok with that. It’s hard to justify paying Latin players that much especially pitchers as they are basically ALL projection.
BTW Memphis game is on MILB.tv so is Springfields. I’m at work now so I’ll watch Springfield tonight and the tape of Memphis later.
For those watching Shelby Miller, where his velocity at this start? Thanks.
No ER for Shelby today, but his pitch count got pretty high in 5 innings. It was fun watching his ERA drop with every out though!
I am keeping an eye on the game on gamecast or whatever it’s called and saw he got hit by a pitch, does anyone know where he got hit? Aka was it in the back or something like that or on a joint?
I was listening on the radio. Announcers said the pitch hit his left hand.
Millers day is done. 5 innings, 5 hits, 2 walks, 0 runs, 6 k’s. The walks were to the first two batters he faced. Play by Play shows a lot of line drives. Will watch on MILB.tv when I can tonight to let you know if he was getting hit hard or not.
1st inning was terrible, around 30 pitches in the inning. However, he recovered from a couple of walks and a bloop single to strike out 2 and pop out the 3rd. Afterward, looked better. Just another slow start.
Miller hitting 93 on stadium gun.
Pitch hit Miller on left hand.
Looking at the Gamecast, the thing that concerned me a bit was Shelby’s inability to put hitters away: Wellington Castillo fouled off six straight 2-strike pitches before taking a called third strike, then later in the game Miller’s opposite number (Travis Wood) even fouled off three 2-strike offerings.
Unrelated minutia: Oscar Taveras is among the Texas League top 7 hitters in doubles AND triples AND taters. Yes, it’s just an 8-team league, but that’s still no mean feat any way you slice it. The teenager’s isolated slugging is nearly double the T.L. average right now. He may not be drawing any walks, but he seems to be (mostly) swinging at pitches he can drive.;)
Your information on Miller just leads me to believe that his curveball isn’t an outpitch yet. In the games I’ve seen him many of his K’s are on fastballs painting the corner or fastballs up and in. Jake Odorizzi blew away the Springfield hitters last night mainly with his fastball running it up the ladder.
I’ve seen Miller throw more curveballs to get ahead in the count but I don’t see him much throw it to finish a guy off. Maybe it’s something he should work on.
Bob make an interesting point here. Andrew – when you get a chance to watch, I will be interested to know what kind of a pitch mix these hitters were fouling off. Was it just very good hitting against a variety of pitches? Or was Miller throwing consistent pitches trying to win with location? Sometimes, the hitting is just very good and you tip your cap to the hitter.
Taveras sitting out tonight. Not hurt according to the NWA announcers. Rosenthal is dominated tonight. Hasn’t thrown a pitch under stress yet.
Dominating I mean.
Rosenthal’s night is done. He dominated through 5, and then ran out of gas in the 6th and was eventually replaced
His line through 5 was about 70 pitches, 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk, 5k’s. He didn’t pitch under stress at all. He only pitched out of the stretch like 2 times.
In the 6th, He got the first batter then gave up a double down the line on a change up I believe to Colon. He grooved the 1st pitch to Myer the next AB for a hard single up the middle which scored Colon. He then walked the clean up hitter pushing. Rosenthal struck out the next man. 2 on and 2 out now. At this point his D failed him. Debra tried to catch Myer sleeping at second base but threw it about 10 feet in front of Wong. It bounced off Wong and Myers advanced to 3rd. A few pi tches later Debra gave up a passed ball and Myer scored. Rosenthal then walked the next man and was replaced.
Rosenthal was throwing hard all game, the announcer mentioned how hard he was throwing especially for a starter. He works very fast BUT when he struggles he works even faster which is why it seems like the walks rack up very quickly.
He threw a ton of fastballs had good command of them up and down in and out. He didn’t seem to vary the velocity on his FB as much as I would have liked. Not many breaking pitches. Threw his slider/cutter a few times which got the announcers attention. Not many changes at all.
If I had the ear of Rosenthal or someone who could contact him I would recommend that he watch Wainwrights last few innings tonight. When Wainwright needs to bear down he takes a deep breath, calms down and is more deliberate. Rosenthal speeds up and loses his composure some. I would also recommend that when he gets in trouble to throw his fastball or two seamer down and not try to hit a corner or throw it too hard. He has such a heavy fastball he could really get out of some jams with ground balls.
BTW…his final line was 5.2 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 bb’s, 6k’s
