Cox seems to be heating up some.
Saw some of the Springfield game. Taveras’s three AB’s. All were off a tough lefty, his butt went one way but he was able to keep the bat in the zone and hit a single to left in the first. The other 2 AB’s he is able to take pitches but at a certain point in the AB he just decides hes going to swing and hits a pitchers pitch. This year he’s been rolling over on the ball and hitting ground balls and bouncers to 1st and 2nd when last year when I saw him he took t hose pitchs and hit them very hard into the left CF gap. I missed the HR today. I’m glad he’s powering up but I don’t want him to lose what made him so good last year which was his ability to hit rockets to the opposite field.
What’s in the water in quad cities? Early in the season, they have 5 players with a .400+ woba: castillo, rahmatulla, medina, montero, and Walsh. I assume this is mostly the wonder of the small sample size, Although all but rahmatulla have wobar’s above .400 too. Not ready to crow about it yet, but some names to watch.
I was at the game where Lyons pitched. His Fastball was 88-91 consistent touched 97 once. He did take a beat. He didn’t command his pitches very well. Breaking Ball looked ok lots of hanger’s that led to Myers taking him yard. He showed flashes off potential. Umpires strike zone was a little tight. Taveras looked solid offensively he was hitting the ball with hard contact every AB. Well defensive game. Lots of nice plays at the hot corner by both teams. Greg Garcia looked smooth at SS today he has a pretty good arm.
Really he hit 97? Maybe a gun misread? No way he throws that hard even muscling up? I have to disagree about Taveras’s 2nd and 3rd AB’s. Saw on the computers and those are the balls he rifled into left center for doubles this year. Increasingly, he’s turning those over for easy 4-3 ground outs or 3 unassisted. Taveras needs to get back to hitting the ball the other way with authority. That and his walk rate. Normally I don’t worry about that. But from the AB’s I’m seeing he will use a good eye for a few pitches but then when he’s ahead he expands the zone and hits a pitchers pitch. It’s like he decides ok it’s time to swing. It’s not all bad last night he hit a very tough pitch out for a HR.
So with a mere .971 OPS as a 19-year-old at AA, he’s obviously scuffling.
lets not get out of hand.. i think andrew’s point/opinion is that his approach could still use some work. That doesn’t have to mean that he’s struggling.
If Andrew is right about Taveras’ approach, then it means the kid has ungodly natural ability with a bunch of upside still to be harnessed. It’s an important observation.
Said well – my take as well. Pretty exciting stuff.
Taveras has a nice smooth swing. Wong also has a nice approach he lifts his front leg up before every pitch.
Good comments everybody. I think Taveras is still looking for the league that will seriously challenge his talents. AA is giving it their best.
