I was also surprised by Gast's performance so far. His walk rate was nothing special last year either, in addition to the subpar K rate you mentioned. That both have improved significantly so far is exciting, but I think we're best thinking of it as an aberration until we hear of a reason he might have taken such a step forward and see it continue for another 100 innings or so. I hope the rumors of a velocity jump are true; it would lend more credence to the idea that this performance may be real.

I want to see him in person before I speak too authoritatively about him. I've heard that his velocity is up this year.

A conversation I overheard minor league coaches have.

Coach A: "Is that guy any good?"
Coach B: "Doesn't matter. He is left handed"

Maybe he turned that hard to pick up pickoff move 90degrees.

Good to see Gast get more attention. Will he be a future LOOGY in the pen or will he stick in Rotation just because he has good stuff and the organization haven't had many quality Lefties starters? Also what role do you think Lyons will get in the future?

Gotta say that's my read of Gast head on. I went from interested in 2010 to bored in 2011 to shocked so far in 2012. Maybe the mechanics have been tweaked and we're seeing an improved version of 2010. I don't trust BABIP so will ignore that statistic. I like the K rate and want to see that hold up. No telling if it can.

We may not know the real John Gast for a while but the longer he looks like the early version of 2012, the more excited I plan to get about this kid.
