Would love to see Miller go 7 innings.

  2. Andrew says:

Gotta feel bad for the Springfield Cardinals. They were up 2-0 going into the bottom of the 9th having only given up 4 hits today. Rondon walks the first man. Hits the second. Goes 3-0 on the third but is somehow is able to throw a strike on 3-0. 3-1 he grooves one and a man that doesn’t have a HR or RBI all year hits a walk off homerun to CF. Cardinals lose 3-2.

Rondon hit 99 in the inning and was sitting 95-96 but it doesn’t matter if you have no clue where it’s going.

Disspointing loss. 9 losses in a row now.

  3. Andrew says:

I just feel bad for that team right now. They haven’t played horribly. They lost the last 3 games 3-2.

  4. Andrew says:

Strong performance by QC in the first half of a double header. They won 13-4 with Home Runs by Walsh, Garcia and Mateo. Martini also had a strong day as well as RDL adding 2 hits.

  5. dan from FL says:

no stopping oscar: mike trout with more power less speed good comparision?

    • Karmaloop says:

That wouldn’t be Mike Trout than. Trout has legit 80 speed, that isn’t the case with Taveras and that is a big part of why Trout is as touted as he is.

  6. dan from FL says:

any one know what Oscar signing bonus was

  7. Hugecardsfan says:

Well, I’m glad the games really don’t count, but have to believe that it’s disappointing to kids who want to win and an organization that wants them to expect to win.

    • pitch and hit says:

They do count. Very much. Maybe not to you or I, but they do to the players.

I am going to go back on my statement, seeing a steady decline since 2010 of AA and AAA affiliates.

      • Andrew says:

You keep implying things but why don’t you just come right out and tell us all who at the AA and AAA level do you have a beef with? Pop Warner has been at AA for a few years now and is in AAA. Maloney is now the 1st base coach.

        • Tackle Box says:

          Yeah, I’m curious too.

Kind of a vague statement….”a steady decline”…..in what?

        • pitch and hit says:

Can’t get much better than Pop, Maloney or Mike Shildt as managers.

I am making an observation my opinion is that someone is missing.

Here’s a hint for you, he ran the farm and had control up to 2010. All these guys you drool over were drafted under him…and the answer is…………

  8. Andrew says:

So Luhnow gets hired for a GM less than 4 months ago and all of a sudden our farm goes to crap? I don’t buy that. Vuch has done a GREAT job in what capacity he had last year.

  9. Andrew says:

Very strong performance by Carlos Martinez tonight. The hit in the 1st was most likely an error. He gave up 2 earned runs in the 2nd though I question why they are earned. The first batter softly singled to right. The second batter hit a soft groundball that got through the infield up the middle. The following batter struckout but on the third strike the opponent stole second and third. An E2 on the catcher as he threw the ball into left field scored the man on third and the one on second advanced to third. The next batter sac’d the man on third home scoring the second run. After that the next batter singled. That was considered 2 earned runs. Not sure why. I guess the assumption is that had the catcher not made the error the sac that scored the second run would have scored the first and the man on second would have moved up and then scored on the following single. Not sure if that would be the case.

In the 5th Martinez gave up a double then lost his control and walked 2 men in a row but got out of it unscathed with 2 pop ups.

  10. pitch and hit says:

I didn’t say it went to crap, you did, those are your words, I said that I have noticed a decline in AA and AAA since 2010, that’s my opinion.

  11. Andrew says:

You have noticed a decline from 1 season and 1 month ago? Maybe the players that graduated the the Bigs were good players and those coming up behind them aren’t as good? Do you remember how horrible Memphis was a few years ago?

    • pitch and hit says:

      Yes I do.
Memphis and Springfield both struggled last year as well.
I find it ironic (don’t you) that back when the farm was ranked almost in last place, it was doing well, now with all the prospects driving up their rankings (not team records), everyone is struggling (not this exclusine to this year).
Why would you suppose that is? What’s missing?

While I believe how you end is more important than where you begin, losing night after night becomes very disheartening and frustrating for everyone. I feel for the players.

      • Andrew says:

So you rather have winning records but not very good players in the system rather than losing but have very strong prospects? What is the point of the Minor League system? To support and develop Big League players. Are you mad at Luhnow for taking a better job?

The good prospects for the most part are performing. The ones that will eventually be weeded out are the ones that aren’t doing great. I also imagine that if players weren’t being challenged they could be dominating at lower levels, i.e if Wong, Taveras and Rosenthal were in Palm Beach instead of Springfield.

So your upset with the consecutive JC titles the last 2 years and QC winning last year and making the playoffs 2 years before?

        • pitch and hit says:

Didn’t you post somewhere that the guys that have rings from the QC championship from last year must really hate “all this losing”?
Do you think they are the only ones that may not like it?

          • Andrew says:

I’m sure everyone hates losing. But the players at Springfield who aren’t the QC guys did a lot of losing last year at Palm Beach.

  12. pitch and hit says:

If either team makes playoffs (neither did last year I think), I will gladly change my mind.

    • Andrew says:

You do realize the job of Memphis isn’t to make the playoffs. It’s to fill holes in STL when needed. This year many people that Memphis depends on has been up with STL.

      • pitch and hit says:

So you are gonna tell the players on that team, that it doesn’t matter if they lose night after night because they are there only to service the team? Tell that to the guys who have been there for 3 or more seasons. That’s not what they want to hear, especially the ones who will never get to STL?

As I said before, you know better, what others say is always argued (you do that at other sites as well). You turned around most of what I said. It must be that trip you took to Jupiter this year?

        • Andrew says:

When players play in the minors they know they have very little shot making the Bigs. Thats just part of the game.

It seems your implying that the Cardinals shouldn’t be challenging Wong, Taveras and Rosenthal with the jump to AA because it’s not fair to the players at Palm Beach?

Quad Cities won the title last year and there 3 best players were promoted a step ahead of where you wanted them. Good for the organization, good for the players, bad for 1 team so you pout that Palm Beach sucks. Blame Stanley for taking PED’s also.

Some of the players in our upper system simply aren’t that great thus the bad record. The relief in Springfield is atrocious. They have cost that team multiple games. A good prospect Tommy Pham is snake bitten. He breaks his wrist robbing a home run and misses last year. In Spring he dived for the ball and seperates his shoulder. He heals and reinjures it diving back into first base. Maybe he should stop diving so much either way it’s just bad luck.

Memphis sucks, blame that on Berkman and Craig for getting hurt so that Carpenter and Robinson aren’t playing there. You can also blame Hamilton for getting hurt and not playing as was expected.
Also our vaunted relief corps has fallen apart. Not Vuch’s fault.

Your saying that Luhnow leaving has made Springfield and Memphis bad yet Vuch is doing exactly what a farm director is supposed to do. We have had some bad luck with injuries and some poor pitchers in the upper levels.

          • pitch and hit says:

And all the top prospects get screwed.
Whatever you said above is not what I said, but must be what you are thinking.

            • Andrew says:

You seem to think that all the teams would be great if Vuch had never taken over.

At least that’s what I think yoru implying because yoru talking about a gradual decline and obviously have an ax to grind. How would Luhnow have done things different?

I’m saying all 4 teams could be doing much better if they didn’t try to agressively promote the QC 3. That instantly makes Palm Beach a good team.

Springfield hasn’t been bad but the relief core pretty much stinks. What can you do about that? Luhnow can’t fix that because most of the relief guys at Springfield are guys he drafted.

And Memphis could be better if it had the players it expected to have. It doesn’t and the great arms in the bullpen started off the year horrible.

You just seem to be whining about how the organization is doing things now without mentioning how we would have done it different in the past?

              • cariocacardinal says:

Would you really try to argue that Springfield would be better if Tavares, Wong, and Rosenthal were in Palm Beach still?

                • Andrew says:

Good point. That’s definately not true. They would be much worse if the QC 3 didn’t make the jump. I guess the point I’m making is this guy is ridicoulous. He’s whining because the system is losing games. They are losing games in certain places because of aggressive promotions by some. They are losing games at the AAA level beacause many of the starters are hurt also. They are losing games in the Texas League because the quality of relievers is subpar.

It just seems like he wants to (female dog) and it got on my nerves. Talking about some slow steady decline of the system is a joke with allof the developmental successes we are seeing.

  13. Andrew says:

Tough luck 3rd for Miller. Ump blows a call a soft roller by the pitcher. He strikes out Brett Jackson but the number 2 hitter dumps one between the LF and SS. After a walk and with the bases loaded Rizzo hits one a few inches over the full extended Pete Kozma for an RBI single that scores 2.

    • Hugecardsfan says:

Well with 4 BB’s in 5 innings and a passle of hits, Shelby’s had more than tough luck and so too Martinez. They didn’t pitch all that well IMO.

      • Hugecardsfan says:

Craig on the other hand jacks a 3 run HR and a 2 run HR. Gotta love that.

      • pitch and hit says:

With Andrew, it’s always tough luck for the top prospects but with “the other guys” its they didn’t do their job.

        • Andrew says:

I don’t pay close attention to the other prospects. I follow the top guys closely to see if they are getting the ball hit hard off of them or if there is more to the story.

      • Andrew says:

Your wrong about the Martinez game. I listened to it. Easy 1st. The second inning with some dinkers and then the catchers error. He came right back 1-2-3 third. Uneventual 4th and then the fifth with the double and 2 walks but got out of it unscathed.

Miller’s game he threw about 20 pitches total in the first 2 innings. Had the long third but that really was a blown call by the ump on the Travis Wood single. Cardeninas HR was legit. The 5th inning he almost got himself otu of but yes he got himself into trouble. Did he pitch well, not at all. Was he rocked? No way. While I don’t really buy BABIP this is an instance where Miller had a tough luck game combined with not being a being able to put hitters away when he has them 0-2.

Overall Martinez has the better game I believe but Shelby’s wasn’t bad at all.

        • Hugecardsfan says:

Even you can’t make Shelby’s pitching performance look good Andrew.

One thing, I got the most K’s by picking Shelby. 4 big ones. Hmmm.

          • Andrew says:

It wasn’t good but it wasn’t someone getting rocked either. Sometimes when people look at a line and see 4runs in 5 innings they think the person got bombed. This wasn’t the case. Without the umps blown call those first 2 runs dont score. The HR still happens though and the run in the 5th probably happens. So it ends up being 5 innings 2 runs 4 walks and 4 k’s.

The worst part of the performance is how many times he went 0-2 and couldn’t put the batter away. He definately didn’t have his best stuff.

  14. DT Flush says:

Miller kinda of struggling with command tonight by walking 4. He was attacking the hitters all night in the strike zone but 4 ER is what he is tagged for. Martinez has a solid outing tonight only 5 IP but only one bad inning pitched. He had 5 Groundouts and 4 Flyouts. At least he’s not just focusing on the Strikeout.

  15. DT Flush says:

Wow what a night for Allen Craig 3-3 two Home Runs 5 RBI. Hopefully he got his timing back at the plate and is ready to start at 1B.

  16. cariocacardinal says:

I’d say Alan Craig is ready to come off the DL.

  17. pitch and hit says:

Although not a top prospect no one mentioned that Blazek had a great game.

The cardinal way is that it’s about the TEAM, with no I.

    Maybe there’s too many “I”s? :)

  18. Hugecardsfan says:

Shelby gets the win when Greenwood is unscored on in 6th and 7th (2K’s), Reifer the 8th (1 K) and Sanchez strikes out the side (1 BB) in the ninth.

  19. Jim1956 says:

Pitch and Hit: I mean no disrespect BUT……..most of us come to this site to follow the TOP PROSPECTS because we are St. Louis Cardinal fans. Although I want to see all do well, I did not open this site to see what pitching line Blazek put up. I wanted to see what Shelby and Carlos did(along with others). If you are concerned with what the teams outcomes are….that is fantastic. But I think it is fine if Andrew and the rest of us root hardest for our top tier prospects that can be difference makers for the big club.

  20. pitch and hit says:

Good for the not so much top prospects Greenwood, Reifer and Sanchez for saving the Memphis game (and Craig).

I root for everyone as it takes a whole village to raise a child! If a player doesn’t have a good night, he doesn’t have a good night, but there’s always excuses. These guys are in learning mode and they ARE going to struggle.

If you come here just to get reports of 2 guys for the night than that doesn’t say much for the system does it?

    • RCHIII says:

It takes a village? That explains it…….

What you say is an excuse, isn’t an excuse – it’s an expansion on reality. If you want to look at a stat line and think that paints the picture fine. I don’t. If an umpire has a small strikezone, that has an effect. All hits are not created equal, etc., etc., etc. There are good stat lines that aren’t that good, and there are bad stat lines that aren’t that bad. The fact that these expansions only occur with the top prospects is because those are the ones that have the greatest opportunity to impact our MLB Club and where the majority of the interest is. Andrew does us all a favor by providing in depth breakdowns – if you don’t like his observations or opinions, don’t read his posts.

  21. Andrew says:

I follow everyone I just don’t see the point in doing what your doing implying that the teams are worse because Luhnow is gone. The whole system are guys Luhnow drafted. THe appropriate guys are being challenged thus weakening the teams they could have been on. At our highest level we have a few guys who are hurt and some prospects struggling. At AA we have some doing well and 2 guys who were the most productive High A players last year not making the transitiation well and struggling badly.

I think is Rosario and Scruggs stepped it up at Springfield and if Cox and Anderson stepped it up at Memphis both teams would have a much better record.

  22. Jim1956 says:

Quoting Hillary Clinton certainly does not make one attractive. LOL. What you are doing is fine. But guys like Andrew and I have our eyes on the big prize, and that should be fine also. This is a great time to be a Cardinal fan and our system is overflowing with great prospects. Let’s enjoy this and be thankful we are not Royals fans!
