I’m super busy with moving this week, so I’m going to keep it short and sweet.  Previously, we have talked a bunch about age and how it matters for prospect status and age vs league average age.  Minor League Central has a great page with the youngest players per level and per league.  Let’s take a look at which Cardinals show up after the jump.

AAA level:

Shelby Miller 21.75 (7th youngest in level)

AAA Pacific Coast League:

Shelby Miller 21.75 (4th youngest in league)

AA level:

Oscar Taveras 20.08 (4th youngest in level)

AA Texas League:

Oscar Taveras 20.08 (2nd youngest in league)

Kolten Wong 21.75 (12th youngest in league)

Trevor Rosenthal 22.17 (18th youngest in league)

High-A Florida State League:

Carlos Martinez 20.83 (13th youngest in league)

The Cardinals have no one on the list for the High-A level, the A level or the Midwest League.

It is not too far a stretch to see that these are the Cardinals best prospects being challenged in leagues against older players.  Some of these players may struggle against the older competition, but the Cardinals think enough of them to push them forward aggressively.

Lunhow did a great job scouting, drafting, and signing these players and Vuch has done a great job putting them in the right level for the talent like Rosenthal, and Taveras.

Lunhow did a solid job stocking the system with talent. Pujols’ and LaRussa’s absences get all of the publicity and justly so, as they are both future hall of famers. Lunhow’s influence will be missed, however, and hopefully felt at the MLB level for the next couple of decades.

I agree. I am nervous over the loss of Lunhow.

While I agree with what you’ve said, this isn’t an exact science. Jack Zdrenick (or however you spell it) was largely responsible for restocking the Brewers farm system. That hasn’t translated very well to success for the Seattle Mariners since his hiring.

So, did the age police finally catch up with OT or are we projecting his age to August? Cause, pretty sure he’s only 19.

    Rosenthal isn’t 22…..yet

    • RCHIII says:

Shelby isn’t 21.75 either……..I think I figured it out though. I think they pegged the ages at the midpoint of the season. Not sure I needed to have to figure that out – would have been nice if they made that clear.
