  • Zach Russell had a scoreless frame despite loading the bases with 1 hit and 2 walks.
  • Ricky Martinez also allowed 1 hit and 1 walk. He also would have been charged with a run if not for Alan Ahmady who threw out a runner at home plate to end the 8th inning.

look at the show colin walsh is putting on; in 103 PAs, he has 25 hits. 16 for extra bases (7 doubles, 3 triples, and 6 HR). he’s slugging .644 in this small sample size. he’s also walking at a good rate – 16 in those 103 PAs, good for a 13% walk rate, which is consistent with (even a step down from) his prior walk rates, prior to this monster power year (16.7% in 2010, 15.5% in 2011).

    • Hugecardsfan says:

He’s 22. I guess I’d be a little more excited if he were doing this in high A or AA… or he’d shown some of this power in previous years.

      • Gruntosaurus says:

Fair enough. He’s not ancient for QC, but he’s not young either.

His tour there last year was only about half a season long. Why so short? Injury, or something else?

        • Matt says:

It seems like a good deal of the QC roster is a bit older than it has been in the past. Is this depth? Guys that were/are marginal but have been held up maybe a year or 2 because of better prospects ahead of them? or have I not been paying as much attention and it always is until around draft time?

          • Tackle Box says:

I find it odd too since, I’m pretty sure, a lot of these guys played at either Batavia or Johnson City last year. I was assuming they were more in line with the teams Quad Cities usually has in terms of age.

Then again, maybe they’re all just about right for the league and we just perceive that as being old since we’re used to having guys that are younger than the league.

            • Gruntosaurus says:

According to B-P, QC currently has the second oldest roster in the Midwest League. It’s not far on the wrong side of average — 21.9 vs. 21.5 — but it’s still on the wrong side. (Milwaukee’s A team is older, if anyone is interested.)

            • cariocacardinal says:

IT doesn’t help that we didn’t draft a single HS pitcher last year.

  2. zuke354 says:

Jackson is putting together a quite, but really good season. An Average above .300 and obp north of .360.

  3. dan from FL says:

    Mo trading with grade
    1) Edmonds for Freese A+
Enough said Playoff hero. Even though Jim is one of my favorite cardinals
    2) Alex Castellanos for Rafael Furcal A
Alex was blocked, Furcal gave us the defense we needed ; bonus with his bat and speed.
    3) Colby for czep, dotel, and Jackson A+ short term I long term
World championship! Colby’s future not sure, great talent weak mind plus we get 2 top draft picks as well.
    4) Wallace etc. for Holiday A
Brett is in AAA for a rebuilding team with the guy who drafted him.
    5) Perez for DeRosa F
Clev closer for bad finger and draft choice
    6) David Carpenter to Houston for Pedro Feliz D
Carp in Houston pen Feliz still looking for his first hit.
    7) Scott Rolen for Troy Glaus C
Each team got one good year.
    8) Mark Worrell and Luke Gregerson for Khalil Greene F-
Love Gregerson and Khail had breakdown
I am sure there are others like the Reyes.

Question who was the draft pick for DeRosa?

    • dan from FL says:

      asked and answered
Seth Blair was pick for DeRosa

    • ebo says:

Quick question: Are you counting everything Holliday has done since the trade? Or just the half-season we traded for that resulted in the Dodger Stadium nutshot?

If you are only counting the half-season, you would almost have to include Cox as part of the haul, because the Cardinals seemed hellbent on sighing Holliday anyway and they would have had to surrender the first round pick that turned into Cox as compensation right?

      • dan from FL says:

I based my grading on what the player has done with the cards.holiday in 4 th season with us. Cox was our regular draft choice. You do not know if the cards would have signed him if he did not play 1/2 a season with us. same situation for westbrook, furcal

        • ebo says:

You’re right we don’t know if we would’ve signed Holliday, the only reason I treated him differently than Furcal or Westrook, is that A) Tony openly pined for him and B) they were willing to make him the highest paid free agent that offseason and the highest paid Cardinal of all time. That is still in the realm of the hypothetical though.

And I know Cox was our regular pick, but had we signed Holliday as a Type A free agent wouldn’t we have lost the pick that turned into Cox?

  4. zuke354 says:

    5) Seth Blair, so its still incomplete, though it looks like Seth Blair isn’t going to provide much.

Also, I would give him a B for actually getting a pretty decent prospect out of Brendan Ryan.
Westbrooke for Ludwick was a nice move as well.

    The Matt Holiday trade: A

    • dan from FL says:

forgot about westbrook/ludwick. also got Greenwood in the deal as well. agree with B

      • Gruntosaurus says:

That was better than a B. As so often, we got Luddy’s career year. He hasn’t been the same hitter since the trade.

As for Perez/The Rose, keep in mind that Perez may be Cleveland’s closer, but he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire there. I got to see him last week in Cleveland (wife and I are touring all 30 MLB parks). I’d rather have Motte.

  5. zuke354 says:

Remember all the fans who whine and complained about “Clueless MO”?

  6. dan from FL says:

I know it is early but it is friday and slow. looking at what we can trade and for who?
I emlinate Miller,Wong,Martinez,Jenkins and Oscar from any trade outside of Kemp, strasburg etc.
trade Jackson,Adams and Rosey for the Cubs Castro

    • Tackle Box says:

I’m curious about Castro’s future. Is he a shortstop going forward? Or is his “errors” more a product of getting to more balls than the typical shortstop? Because, he gets a ton of errors.

      • dan from FL says:

Great range strong arm Mental laspes . I think if he worked with Jose O. might solve problem. boy can he hit.

        • zuke354 says:

Tons a talent. But the mention of Jose O. made me think of another Jose O in a similar situation…Jose Offerman.

    Notes from Springfield 5/3:

Wong appears very locked in at the plate. His hit was a crisp single the other way. Good plate discipline all night. There have been a number of questions floating around related to the quality of his defense. While Springfield’s D was atrocious on the whole last night, Wong made all the plays hit to him and additionally made a great play up the middle, ranging to the 3B side of second and almost got a speedy runner at first. There was no way I thought he’d even get to that ball, let alone almost throw the runner out.

Disappointed that Taveras only played a few innings, but the throw gunning down the runner at home was a missle. Apart from that great throw, I’d say he looks ‘toolsy’ in center, but not ‘comfortable.’ Hopefully that will come with more experience. Perez did a terrific job blocking the plate, not sure the runner ever touched home plate.

Gast was all over the place. For both sides it was an erratic, but generally big, strike zone (especially on low pitches) and he still had trouble. A couple of Cards hitters were rung up on pitches literally at their shoetops. If my memory is correct, the punchouts of Scruggs and Perez were the worst calls of the night. Gast touched 96 (on the Springfield gun), sat 91-92. Good range of velocity, as several offspead offerings were 79-83. Officially picked off one runner, but actually picked off two (Scruggs misplayed the other potential PO).

Perez’s ‘single’ was actually a double off the centerfield wall that he was admiring (thinking it was gone) and got thrown out at second. Not pretty.

Fornataro wasn’t nearly as bad as his line would suggest. I wasn’t sure we were ever going to convert a third out in the ninth defensively. He sat mid-nineties on the stadium gun.

  8. rj says:

Why would we have surrendered a draft pick that turned out to be Cox if we had not signed Holliday? we would have received at least one extra pick had we not signed him.

    • dan from FL says:

you are right. do not know what ebo meant?

    • ebo says:

To clarify I meant that if we had signed Holliday as Type A free agent from another team we would have lost the pick that turned into Cox.

I was essentially saying an added bonus of the Holliday trade was having the luxury of re-signing him as one or our free agents and not having to pay the penalty that goes with signing a player on the open market.

      • dan from FL says:

you are right if we did not trade for Holiday and signed him we would lost a draft pick. then we would still have Wallace, peterson, moertenson and holiday The fact is Tony wanted a lot did not always get it.

  9. DT Flush says:

Good to see Jackson having a good season offensively so far. If he can hit consistently because he is a really good defender at SS he will get a starting knod.
