Carlos Martinez, Mike O’Neill and Jonathan Rodriguez power Palm Beach to the system’s only victory.  Tyrell Jenkins pitched in a losing effort for the River Bandits.  He recorded 10 of his 18 outs via the strikeout, once again demonstrating why those of us who follow the minor leagues are excited about the guy.

Do you know how long Wong and Tavaras will be out for Springfield?

    • azruavatar says:

Taveras is back in the lineup today. Wong is on the bench; day-to-day but supposedly available in a pinch.

      • dixie_flyer says:

he’s 2-4 with a HR, so it would appear that Tavaras has recovered from his injury

        • azruavatar says:

Taveras has been known to … overreact … at times that is very consistent with his age. Personal conduct on the field is a message that the organization has been working to deliver to Taveras.

          • Andrew says:

Huh? He stayed down with the collision and had the medical team check his right side but by the end of it he was up and walking it off and eventually jogged off the field.

  2. Shanky says:

God bless Jeff Luhnow, giving us gifts (C. Martinez, Jenkins, Taveras) that just keep on giving.

    • Indiana Cardinal says:

Yes, Luhnow’s success will put pressure on the new guy Kantowicz (spelling??), especially with all the high picks. Great opportunity to either stack the system, or create alot of second guesses.

      • BigJawnMize says:

It is the same system with a different guy on top. We will continue to do fine.

        • BigJawnMize says:

And said different guy helped develop the system originally.

          • T-Bird says:

The point is valid. Without knowing the net effect of Lunhow on the system as opposed to the rest of the procurement staff, it is impossible to know how the organization will fair in the future.

That said, this is Mo’s organization now. 90% of the moves he has made so far have moved the Cardinals in a tremendous direction. I have faith the brass will make shrewd picks in June.

  3. Zach says:

I really hoped Cox would adjust nicely to AAA and become prime trade bait this summer; if he keeps struggling, I don’t know that they can do that.

  4. shaneo69 says:

C-Mart also beaned 3 guys to go along with his one walk.

    • Wade says:

It’s ok … they were new to the league and he just wanted to be old school.

      • Oliver says:

        Precious.
You’d think Hamels might have shown a little more appreciation when he got beaned by Zimmermann.

        • Danny says:

I think we ought to clear up the expression of beaning. Back in the day beaning was when you got your bell rung with a baseball in the ear. Not when you were hit in the hip pocket. IMHO!

      • pitch and hit says:

        That was very funny. :)

    • Gruntosaurus says:

He’s always had grisly HBP numbers. Over his career to date, he has nailed more than one of every 40 hitters he’s faced. Given that major-league average is about 1 per 130, and pitchers with rates higher than 1/70 tend to get very unpleasant labels stuck to them (e.g. Kerry Wood), if he still is plunking guys like this in the majors, he may start to find people gunning for him.

    • Andrew says:

2 of the HBP and the WP were in the 7th where no doubt he had worn down by then.

    • BigJawnMize says:

thank gawd kept his pitch count down…

  5. Bob says:

Martinez has always hit lots of guys: 22 now, in 172 pro innings. I like it. Not afraid to pitch inside.

Of course, he’s also got 17 wild pitches, so mebbe there’s just a bit too much movement there, too. But a better than 3-1 K/BB rate, both this year and career, looks just fine to me.

Great to Jenkins striking guys out, too.

As for any mid-season deals, it’s hard to project the team needing anything more than a backup backstop, or perhaps a bullpen arm. And guys like that can likely be had for a loooow level prospect a la the Castellanos/Furcal deal (which just looks better and better and better all the time).

    • Oliver says:

To be fair, Castellanos had the best offensive numbers in the PCL this year before he got hurt. If his position switch to second works out, he might be a solid everyday player up the middle.
Of course, Furcal’s contributions last September and his solid D in the postseason trump any concerns that we dealt AC. Nice to see he still has the bat and speed that made him one of the more exciting shortstops in the NL the last decade. I thought the Beltran signing was shrewd, but re-upping Furcal looks huge right now.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

“Not afraid to pitch inside” … There’s a nice euphemism for you.
With a little time on my hands this morning, I looked at minor-league HBP rates for some guys with major-league reputations for throwing at hitters. (Be it noted that this is not a reputation I particularly want my pitchers to have. “Unafraid to pitch inside,” fine. “Headhunter” … that will come back to bite you.) Some results:
Kerry Wood: 1 MLB batter hit per 59 PA, 1 MiLB batter hit per 45 PA
      Byung-Hyun Kim: 1 MLB per 48 PA, 1 MiLB per 53 PA
Carlos Zambrano: 1 MLB per 74 PA (not really frighteningly high despite his reputation), 1 MiLB per 70 PA
Johnny Cueto (curse him): 1 MLB per 59 PA, 1 MiLB per 50 PA
Daniel Cabrera: 1 MLB per 54 PA, 1 MLB per 76 PA

And some guys who have relatively low HBP rates yet are highly successful pitchers:
Adam Wainwright: 1 MLB per 157 PA, 1 MiLB per 98 PA
Roy Halladay: 1 MLB per 155 PA, 1 MiLB per 123 PA
Tim Lincecum: 1 MLB per 169 PA, 1 MiLB per 236 PA (small sample size alert)
Cliff Lee: 1 MLB per 154 PA, 1 MiLB per 141 PA
CC Sabathia: 1 MLB per 137 PA, 1 MiLB per 81 PA

So hitting guys seems to be a “repeatable skill” (such as it is …), with some players reducing their HPB rate by 1/3 on reaching the Show, but most, including the real head hunters, staying roughly where they were. (Note that the overall ratio in MLB in 2011 was 1/119, while in the FSL it was 1/76 — but of course, most of the FSL pitchers never sniff the majors. In the PCL it’s 1/100.) What we are seeing with C-Mart in this regard seems to be what he is. And I’d a lot rather he join that second group of pitchers than the first one.

      • zuke354 says:

So he hits guys like pedro did.

        • Gruntosaurus says:

Pedro’s rates were 1/81 in MLB, 1/74 in MiLB, excluding his rookie-league season for which records are incomplete. (That season would have raised his rate somewhat, in all likelihood). Again, C-Mart is nailing more like 1/35 to 1/40. That’s kind of like the love child that Pedro would have had with a pit bull.

  6. Snayke says:

Re: Bench — they also need someone to send Shane Robinson back where he belongs.

  7. dan from FL says:

There is a cardinal prospect I never hear anything about Jermaine A. Curtis 5th round pick out of UCLA in 2008
has put up decent numbers last couple of years OBP 380,414 and so far this season 500 has great K/BB ratio as well. and is an infielder. yet it seems like he is the invisable man. he is only 24

    • Gruntosaurus says:

I will also say that I have a soft spot for any player who uses “O Fortuna” from “Carmina Burana” as his walk-up music.

  8. Bob says:

Thanks for the HBP write-up, Grunt!

Maybe Carlos does need to tone it down, at least a bit. ;)

Jermaine is kinda interesting; guys with superior BB/K numbers can sometimes blossom late….and I believe Curtis has played 2nd, 3rd, and some OF in the minors. Could be mistaken about that, though. (Too lazy to look it up right now.)

Aside: Did the same StL scout ink both Taveras & Martinez?

    • Mrs. TLR says:

Juan Mercado signed both Taveras and Martinez along the north shore of the DR

    • Gruntosaurus says:

Correct, he has played in all three OF positions. Amusing trivium: he also has pitched in the minors. Twice. 5 batters faced total, all retired.

  9. sadsushi says:

outstanding day for C-Mart and Tyrellllllllllllllllll Jenkinnssss

  10. dan from FL says:

Oscar does it again 3 run homer to win todays game

    • Jeffery says:

Taveras home run added to the lead. Not the game winner. Made it easier for the bullpen in the 9th. Gast had an outstanding game.

  11. DT Flush says:

Martinez numbers are better so far this season. He’s getting more contact out’s which is hopefully a sign of polishing up. Hope he can keep the success up.

  12. solar pons says:

The system looks great, both hitters and pitcher. Great joy in Cards Nation.
