Some potential lefty specialists taking the mound tonight.
IMO Addition is still at AAA Memphis for depth in they’re rotation. Lyons yes likely lefty specialists but you can’t looked that far ahead.
It’s just that when I think of guys like Additon and Lyons, it reminds me of pitchers like Mike Matthews. Basically, if they are starting more than 5 games for the Cardinals, it’s probably a bad thing.
I still have hope that Ferrara can become a back-end starter, however, I don’t think his arm will be able to hold up if he has to throw 180+ innings every year.
You say we can’t look that far ahead, but that’s part of the fun with following prospects. We want to watch them and try to predict what they can do at the major league level. I think there are just too many guys ahead of Lyons and Additon that could potentially start for the Cardinals in the next 3 years or so. Not including guys in the majors like Wainwright, Garcia, and Carpenter (if he comes back), you still have guys like Lynn, Miller, Rzep, Rosenthal, etc. etc. that will get a shot before them.
Plus Jenkins and C-Mart!!
For those that don’t follow CT, I will copy and paste my comments from there:
I watched Springfield in Little Rock the last 2 nights…losing 2 one run games. Taveras didn’t start tonight but pinch hit in the top of the 9th with the sacks jammed. Last night w. 2 guys on they walked him intentionally in the late innings. He cracked a sharp line drive to left bringing in 2 runs to make the 9-7. Wong followed with a bullet to center, his 4th hit of the night…along with a walk was on base 5 times. Wong’s hit drove in the 8th run and put Taveras on 3rd… It ended there with Jermaine Curtis lofting a fly to left.
But, there was some nice fielding going on. In the bottom of the 8th Greg Garcia playing SS dove to his right to steal a base hit jumped to his feet and fired to 1st. The next play Kolten Wong crossed over 2B grabbed a ball heading to center leaped in the air and fired a bullet to 1st.
Lyons was awful in the 1st inning, 4 runs including a bases clearing double, but after that he settled down. J Wright and Rondon proceded to give Arkansas a prodigious lead with pretty inept pitching before the spirited comeback in the 9th.
You guys are gonna love everything about Kolten Wong. He has a very sure glove and hits rockets to all fields….with a good eye.
I can see Lyons as a lefty specialist. He has a good move to 1st base…probably learned from J Gast. Picked a runner off cleanly. Once he settled down he was very effective. His stuff is good. A couple hits in the 1st inning were “well placed” and a couple untimely walks…but then, when are walks timely?
I think Gast will rival all our other studs for a starter gig. It’s not going to be a cake walk for Miller, Martinez and Rosenthal. I’m planning on seeing Rosie pitch Sunday in Springifled….here’s hoping he stays on schedule.
