Thanks to Wachto for the link to Keith Law’s first Mock draft. Law’s Mock Drafts are packed with information, not just in the pick but in the explanation below the pick. After the jump, let’s parse the names Law casually throws into the Cardinals selection at 19. (ESPN insider for the full article)

Here’s Law:

19. St. Louis Cardinals
Stryker Trahan, C, Acadiana H.S. (Lafayette, La.)

St. Louis is linked to lots of bats, including Cecchini if he’s here, Davis, Russell and Stanford’s Stephen Piscotty. Haven’t heard Gallo here, but he’d make a lot of sense if they believe he’ll hit. Sims is one pitching possibility.

Ok, lets parse this one at a time:

Stryker Trahan – C – Acadiana HS (LA)Here’s ESPN’s HS Blog on Trahan: “Trahan possesses good arm strength, quick feet and a consistent swing that produces above-average power from the left side of the plate. He’s strong and sturdy, suggesting he can physically handle catching long term, but he also runs well, posting times from home to first in the low four-second range. He’s committed to Ole Miss, but the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder has a chance to be taken off the board among the top 20 picks and is among the better high school catching prospects over the past five years.” Here’s a video of him hitting from Baseball America and here’s the 30 second scouting report video from MLB.com.

Needless to say I would be very excited about Trahan.

Gavin Cecchini – SS – Barbe HS (LA)Here’s what I found about Cecchini previously when I looked at mock drafts (with video)

Cecchini gets the “eh” vote of confidence from me.

DJ Davis – OF – Stone County HS (MS) – Davis is a left-handed hitting, speedy, leadoff type CF who is flying up draft boards. Here’s his scouting video from MLB.com

Usually I don’t like late risers, but Davis’ speed will play, but I thought the Cardinals picked up several speedy CF types in last year’s draft and other drafts in players like Virgil Hill.

Addison Russell – SS – Pace High School (FL)ESPN HS: ”Russell looks more like a third baseman than a shortstop, and his power follows suit. But he moves his feet well and has terrific hands, so there’s a chance for him to stick at short in pro ball as long as he remains in top condition. ”

Here’s his MLB.com scouting video.

Seems like he wants to play shortstop, but everyone is projecting him at third, but goodness gracious he can generate bat speed. He seems like a plus power player down the line.

Stephen Piscotty – 3B/OF – Stanford – Cape Cod League alert on Piscotty as he won the batting title in the Cape League. Purple Haze previously wrote up Piscotty here.

Piscotty looks like the typical low-floor college hitter with limited power.

Joey Gallo – 3B – Bishop Gorman HS (NV)ESPN HS Baseball blog: ”Gallo, also a bit of a prospect as a right-handed pitcher, is a big, strong left-handed hitter that stands 6-foot-5. He creates leverage and loft and has above-average present game power to support the projections of his raw power grade. He’s played some third base but likely ends up at first. At the Area Code Games last August, scouts likened him to Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman in terms of upside potential.” Here’s his MLB.com draft video

Gallo (who Law indicates has not been linked to the Cardinals) has the slugging first baseman profile all over him with high Ks and high slugging.  Can he make enough contact down the line to hit those HRs?

Lucas Sims – RHP – Brookwood HS (GA)ESPN HS Baseball blog: ”His fastball sat between 91-93 mph with a devastating curveball and a changeup that has improved since the Prospect Classic. … Sims could head to Clemson, but he could also land in the top half of the first round of the draft thanks to a plus fastball and curveball. The breaking ball sits in the low-80s with good shape, depth and late break.”

Project-able right-handed high school pitcher.  He doesn’t quite have the pedigree of Shelby Miller coming out, but there is still a lot to get excited about with that, especially one that has two secondary pitches already.

Of the seven names dropped by Law, here is my order of preference at 19:
Stryker Trahan
Addison Russell
Joey Gallo
Lucas Sims
DJ Davis
Stephen Piscotty
Gavin Cecchini

What’s yours?

I would swap sims and gallo…gallo’s has no positional value and must hit with a lot of power to have much value overall…not a lot of room for error with him.

Who does law have the cards taking at 23?

    • Jeff says:

      Piscotty.

    • T-Bird says:

Agreed on Sims/Gallo. Schaffer will probably be gone by the time STL picks at 19, but if he is not, that would be my choice at 19. I really like Schaffer’s power/obp, and chance to stick at 3b. I like Trahan the best out of all players listed here. Another player I like a lot is Lance McCullers.

I agree with what seems to be the general consensus that the organization should be focusing on building up its positional player depth. However, due to the importance of pitching, I hope that one or two high upside arms are taken within the first 5 picks (see Sims, McCullers). It is likely that one or two of STL’s current high-upside arms will not become who we hope they will become.

      • Karmaloop says:

I don’t think Schaffer sticks at third. He’s already a big bodied third baseman, and seems destined to move to first sooner rather than later. That and he’s got holes in his swing and I think he’s a .275 hitter in the prime of his career.

  2. Vision says:

Gallo is honestly a better prospect as a pitcher, but he wants to hit, and hit only.

    • DT Flush says:

Gallo would be a very good trade chip down the road if Adams pans out. I like Gallo’s bat also good to see he can pitch too.

      • BigRob says:

You are right about Gallo being a good trade chip. In a similar situation, the Reds traded Yonder Alonso (because they had Votto) to the Padres for Mat Latos. I’ll admit I’m not a big fan of Latos, but that’s still a big name they were able to get with Alonso being one of the centerpieces.

      • Karmaloop says:

But we’re assuming that Gallo finishes out as a hitter. He has some issues in his swing, and he strikes out at a rate at the high school level you wouldn’t want to see. He wouldn’t be the worst pick, but he’s not the best one either.

  3. Shanky says:

I like Trahan and Russell the most out of this group. Davis seems redundant after all the outfielders with wheels we took high last year. Last year we addressed the speed, I think this year we get some live sticks. I also like David Dahl a lot, if he makes it to 19.

  4. Matt says:

Obviously Stryker Trahan because that is a big league name if I’ve ever seen one.

  5. nmstar says:

My list is is Stryker Trahan, Lucas Sims, Addison Russell, DJ Davis, Gavin Cecchini and then Stephen Piscotty. I’d also like Juan Berrios in the sandwich round.

  6. BigJawnMize says:

eh…give me Trahan. Shitty swings on the rest of them.

Real scouts draft after the first 10 picks…a lot of unappealing players on the mock drafts.

  7. JC says:

Here are the guys I am interested in…some are more 1S Rd guys but if we had some level of combination of these guys we should be excited to add to an already stacked Farm:

Marcus Stroman – RHP (probably won’t be there when we pick)
Stryker Trahan – C (A guy I am very high on and we have the ability to let him grow as a C with Yadi locked up)
Addison Russell – SS/3B (Many think he will move off SS to 3B…but I’m not so sure…regardless his bat will play at either)
Andrew Heaney – LHP (Another guy that most likely won’t be there when we pick but the best College LHP in the class)
Courtney Hawkins – OF (Very toolsy OF that could be special…quite high on him)
Ty Hensley – RHP – (Power FB and hammer CB combo)
Chris Stratton – RHP – (Quickly rising on my board – solid college arm)
Gavin Cecchini – SS – (No doubt he stays at SS with bat potential that could make him all-star caliber)
Lucas Sims – RHP (FB/CB combo…would not be a fast mover but the potential is there for a #2 SP or maybe more)
Victor Roache – OF/1B (Broken wrist has his stock down a bit…but he can mash. More of a 1S target)
Nick Williams – OF (A raw tool shed…would have to be patient but I love this kid. 1S Rd target for me)
Tyler Naquin – OF (If you believe he sticks in CF his value is boasted quite a bit. Great arm and smooth swing – 1S Rd target)
Matt Smoral – LHP – (HS tall lanky LHP…committed to NC which might be tough to get him signed. 1S target)
Hunter Virant – LHP (Another HS LHP that has only been focusing on pitching for about a year…big upside. 1S target for me)
Barrett Barnes – OF (College OF with good speed/power combination. I think he stays in CF long term but there are mixed feelings on that. 1S Rd target)

  8. BigRob says:

Is this a bad year to have so many top picks? I hope the Cardinals scouting department can surprise a lot of people and get some quality prospects in a weak draft.

  9. VolsnCards5 says:

This is a relatively wea draft, bits never bad to have 6 top 100 picks…Cards scouts and FO just has to do a good job of mining talent

  10. Mrs. TLR says:

Trahan is like 2003 first rounder, Barton. Good bat, but would need to improve a lot to catch.

    • JC says:

I don’t agree with that assessment. He isn’t polished by any means but he is a guy that has all the ability to catch and he just needs to work on technique and needs some strong C coaches and time. His bat is more special than Barton’s was as well.

      • Mrs. TLR says:

Barton was said to be the best hitter coming out of high school in 2003. This was farce of course, because in reality no one can forecast the upside of every high schooler in the nation, but this was the storyline back in 2003, lest this be forgotten now.
Trahan looks like he has more pop than Barton, so this is in his favor. But its hard to imagine the Cards would invest a high pick on a catcher with iffy receiving skills.

        • Andrew says:

With Molina locked up they can take Trahan slow and develop his receiving skills. Unless you want to keep drafting future possible back up catchers like Cody Stanley and have no one when Molina retires.

        • JC says:

He was considered one of the best HS bats in the 2003 draft…no consensus on him being the best. He also slipped to the Cards at #28 because he was a defensive liability and had a bad body for C…so I think there were many that knew he would never make it as a catcher. Not sure his power was ever projected to be big enough to be excited about him as a 1B prospect which essentially is what he became.

With Trahan he has a chance to be a special hitter with more power. Nothing I have read makes me believe he won’t be able to catch…but he is a little more raw on the catching side of things than thought before the season started. The key here is we have the ability to take it slow and let him progress as a C. Also if his bat ends up being as good as some are saying it won’t matter if he is a C or corner OF…his bat will play…obviously positional value would say we would hope he sticks at C.

          • Andrew says:

I don’t know where I heard this from it may have been a poster or a scout or a pundit. But Trahan if he can stick at catcher he can be better than Brian McCann. Someone like that after Yadi retires is worth taking it very, very slowly with despite wanting to move him off for his bat.

    • Andrew says:

I agree with JC. Trahan has much more physical talent and skills than Barton did. He’s got a sturdy body very good arm and pop times. Just needs some time to learn how to call pitches and work on blocking pitches.

  11. VolsnCards5 says:

If Trahan is available and we don’t select him…I’ll be perturbed

  12. Andrew says:

Speaking of the upcoming draft here is probably the best single place to find information on the July 2nd guys…great report on many of the players.

  13. zuke354 says:

A guy I would also like to see the cards pick up at some point in the draft is Trenton Moses out of semo.
