I don’t know where I heard this from it may have been a poster or a scout or a pundit. But Trahan if he can stick at catcher he can be better than Brian McCann. Someone like that after Yadi retires is worth taking it very, very slowly with despite wanting to move him off for his bat.

He was considered one of the best HS bats in the 2003 draft…no consensus on him being the best. He also slipped to the Cards at #28 because he was a defensive liability and had a bad body for C…so I think there were many that knew he would never make it as a catcher. Not sure his power was ever projected to be big enough to be excited about him as a 1B prospect which essentially is what he became.

With Trahan he has a chance to be a special hitter with more power. Nothing I have read makes me believe he won’t be able to catch…but he is a little more raw on the catching side of things than thought before the season started. The key here is we have the ability to take it slow and let him progress as a C. Also if his bat ends up being as good as some are saying it won’t matter if he is a C or corner OF…his bat will play…obviously positional value would say we would hope he sticks at C.

With Molina locked up they can take Trahan slow and develop his receiving skills. Unless you want to keep drafting future possible back up catchers like Cody Stanley and have no one when Molina retires.

Barton was said to be the best hitter coming out of high school in 2003. This was farce of course, because in reality no one can forecast the upside of every high schooler in the nation, but this was the storyline back in 2003, lest this be forgotten now.
Trahan looks like he has more pop than Barton, so this is in his favor. But its hard to imagine the Cards would invest a high pick on a catcher with iffy receiving skills.

I agree with JC. Trahan has much more physical talent and skills than Barton did. He’s got a sturdy body very good arm and pop times. Just needs some time to learn how to call pitches and work on blocking pitches.
