The system goes 3 and 1. Big nights for Matt Adams, Scott Gorgen (who sets a personal record) and Garrett Wittels.

Memphis 9, Las Vegas 6

  • Ryan Jackson was 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Matt Adams likes playing in the thin Nevada air going 4-for-5 with a double and two homeruns. That brings his HR total to 9 and puts his ISO over .250 currently.
  • Newly acquired Jamie Romak, a stopgap player being used to fill the vacancies that Memphis is experiencing due to injuries and call-ups in the big leagues, went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Zack Cox was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
  • Cedric Hunter was 2-for-4 with a HR.
  • Brian Broderick got the start and was blasted for 6 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings. I don’t use the term blasted for hyperbolic effect in this case; Broderick allowed 4 home runs. He struck out 2 and walked 1.
  • Maikel Cleto struck out 1 and walked 1 in a scoreless frame.
  • Chuckie Fick pitched a perfect 9th.

Springfield 6, Tulsa 3

  • Kolten Wong was 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk. That is Wong’s 3rd homerun of the season, which was equaled by his double play counter part …
  • Greg Garcia who also went yard for his 3rd of the season in a 2-for-4 effort. Despite having a batting average 60 points lower than Wong, Garcia actually has the higher OBP and OPS. More on him later this week.
  • Oscar Taveras was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.
  • Chris Swauger was 1-for-3 with a home run.
  • Scott Gorgen had a great night striking out 10 batters in 6 innings. He allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. It’s the first double digit strikeout game of Gorgen’s professional career.
  • Eric Fornataro struck out 1 in 2 perfect innings.
  • Keith Butler made things interesting with 3 hits and 2 strikeouts in a scoreless 9th. Butler struck out the last to batters of the game (swinging strikeouts nonetheless) with the bases loaded to earn his 6th save.

Palm Beach 4, Daytona 8

  • Mike O’Neill was 2-for-5.
  • Alan Ahmady was 2-for-2 with a double.
  • Drew Benes had a rough outing allowing 5 runs in 4.1 innings on 7 hits. He walked 1 and failed to strikeout a batter.
  • Palm Beach’s offense had as many strikeouts as Daytona did hits.

Quad Cities 7, Beloit 6 (11 innings)

  • Luis Mateo was 3-for-5.
  • Matt Williams was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk.
  • Colin Walsh was 1-for-4 with a pair of walks. Walsh is currently sporting a .310/.431/.620 line for the season.
  • Garrett Wittels was eating up the Beloit pitching with a 4-for-6 night at the plate.
  • For a game that went to extras, the bullpen was especially stretched because starter Dail Villanueva failed to make it out of the 5th inning. He went 4.1 innings allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 3.
  • Robert Stock struck out 2 and walked 1 in 1.1 scoreless innings. He has better than a strikeout an inning this season but the command is sketchy with a high walk total. For someone just converting back to pitching, it’s good to see that the pure stuff appears to be there.
  • Things remained tied at 5 apiece until the River Bandits scored 2 in the top of the 11th. Danny Miranda and Willy Paulino combined to pitch the 11th. Paulino made things interesting by allowing an inherited runner to score before recording the last out.

That last out in the Quad Cities game was
    a walk-off-outfield-assist by Nick Martini.

Really excited to read the writeup on Garcia. He’s steadily moved up with low strikeout totals and good OBPs since being drafted, and (I think) at draft time he was known to be a solid defender at shortstop. I’m curious to know if he can still handle the position or if he’ll have to stay at second. Does anyone know if he and Wong played together in college?

    • bc says:

Yes, Wong and Garcia played together at Hawaii.

in the event of any injuries to infielders on the ML club, i’d be interested to see jackson promoted to a utility role and see wong and garcia promoted in tandem to handle the memphis MIF.

Colin Walsh’s numbers at QC are interesting, but a little tempered by him being 22 and spending his 3rd season in low A. Fangraphs lists him at 3B, but he played LF. Can he be anything but a corner OF?

  4. Andrew says:

Carlos Martinez out for 2 weeks with Shoulder tendenitis.

  5. Andrew says:

    7 Day DL

I’ll continue to believe c-mart is a reliever long term…the body type mixed with mechanics scares me

    • Andrew says:

He has cleaned up his delievry and isn’t going max effort as much now. He’s sitting around 93 and 94 and pitching now just throwing. He’s doing exactly what he needs to be doing now. learning to be a pitcher.

    • pitch and hit says:

I am with you. And when they are done with the experiment to make him a starter he will move to the pen.

      • sadsushi says:

Why do some people only want C-Mart to be a reliever? He has more value as a starter..Smaller build pitchers can be starting pitchers.

    Hope your right

Wong hits HR #4 Saturday night and Springfield wins 1-0 on the backs of Hooker, Blazek, Fontanaro and Butler. Nice game despite Taveras quiet 0-3 night.

Sometimes it’s good for the team and the fans when those that are not thought of “as top prospects” have good nights.

  10. Tom s. says:

Goold has a new minor league round up on the p-d site. among tidbits- colin Walsh to be considered for a shift to second base, maness to be promoted to AA soon.

  11. Andrew says:

No he hasn’t, he was a 2nd coming out of Stanford but last year during his time at QC he played everhwere but second pretty much. He was at 3rd, left, right and DH.

  12. Tom s. says:

    Per b-r, Walsh played 36 games at 2b in 2010, and 2 in 2011.

  13. Andrew says:

Ahhh……didn’t take into account 2010. He spent some time at QC is 10, but I guess his 2nd base games were his time in Batavia.
