[azru 8:18am: Updated with Memphis results]

A quick link that I’ll pass your way with an outsiders’ perspective on Matt Adams after seeing him recently.  We corresponded briefly and you’ll see my quotes in the piece.

Memphis 3, Tucson 9

  • Ryan Jackson was 2-for-4.
  • Steve Hill was 1-for-4 with a homerun.
  • Jamie Romak was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Zack Cox was 2-for-4.
  • Shelby Miller was hit and hit hard. He allowed 7 runs (4 earned) in 3.2 innings on 8 hits. Those 8 hits included 3 doubles, 1 triple and 2 homeruns.  Miller struck out 4 while walking 2.
  • Jess Todd struck out 3 in 2.1 innings allowing 1 hit.  If you missed it, Todd has quickly put together a stellar start to his season. In 21.2 innings, he’s struck out 22 and walked just 3.  I still think he’s got it in him to be a respectable reliever in the big leagues.
  • Adam Reifer allowed 3 hits and 2 ER in 1 IP. He struck out 1.

Springfield 4, Tulsa 0

  • Jermaine Curtis was 2-for-3 with a walk.
  • Oscar Taveras was 2-for-4.
  • Kyle Conley was 1-for-2 with a homerun and a pair of walks.
  • Seth Maness was simply masterful in his Springfield debut. The right hander went 7.2 innings walking just 1 and allowing 5 hits. He shut out Tulsa while striking out 8. Maness has now walked 2 batters in 53.2 innings.
  • Eric Fornataro closed out the game with 1.1 innings not allowing an opponent to reach base.

Palm Beach 2, Tampa 5

  • Vance Albitz was 2-for-4.
  • Starlin Rodriguez went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.
  • Jonathan Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with a walk. After a pleasantly surprising 2011 that included an ISO over .200 and a .389 OBP, Rodriguez has struggled mightly. He’s currently sporting a .228/.294/.322 line.
  • Todd McInnis took the loss allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings. All the runs scored on a pair of homeruns.

Quad Cities 10, Clinton 6

  • Matt Williams was 3-for-5.
  • Nick Martini was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Roberto de la Cruz was 2-for-5.
  • Jonathan Cornelius allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings. He struck out 3.
  • Robert Stock picked up the win courtesy of a 6 run 7th inning. He pitched 2 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits and a walk. He continued to strikeout batters at a nice clip with 2 Ks.

I am heartened to see Stock continue to cut back on walks.

    • jjray says:

Me too. I thought QC was an aggressive assignment for him and he did not fare well there initially. Glad to see him right the ship quickly.

  4. Tom s. says:

Also, there was a double steal of home and second by rahmatulla and hill.

I really thought Fornataro would have been promoted to Memphis in the last set of moves. The guy has been great at Springfield and when I saw him in early May, he was throwing 97-98. I know everyone says that the gun there is fast, but, that same night I saw a steady run of relievers from both teams(probably around 10) and I did noy see anyone else above 93 that night except Rosenthal. And he hit 100 4 times that night. What do you all think of Eric?

    • RCHIII says:

I agree Eric is probably the best reliever left in Springfield. I would expect him to be promoted when there is room.

Fornataro has been a starter for the last two years so I would assume they are trying to give him some time to get re acclimated to relieving before promoting him. His k/9 rate does not look great but the rest of his numbers look very good. So I wonder how much faster the gun is at Springfield? Can’t be more than 3 mph can it?

  6. jimmyjoe says:

    Viva Zavada!
