The best thing that happened in Cardinal Land tonight was Adam Wainwright’s complete game shutout. That being said, Anthony Ferrara did his best to match him by pitching seven innings of shutout ball. Unfortunately, Ferrara’s teammates let him down and Palm Beach joined Memphis in the loser’s bracket.
Hitting:
- Steven Hill went 2-for-4 w/ 1 R while playing 1B
- Bryan Anderson went 1-for-3 w/ a 2-run homer and 1 BB
- Jamie Romak’s only hit in 4 AB was a double
- Zack Cox went 1-for-3
- Pete Kozma went 0-2 but did take two walks
Pitching:
- Nick Additon got the start and gave up a big inning in the 4th when four runs scored: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 BB and 2 K
- Barret Browning (1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and Sam Freeman (1 H, 2 K) each pitched a scoreless inning
- In the 8th, Chuckie Fick gave up the ghost and his ERA, he allowed four runs to score in the inning
Tampa 3 @ Palm Beach 2 (10 innings)
Hitting:
- Mike O’Neill went 1-for-3 w/ 1 2B and 2 BB
- Rainel Rosario went 1-for-5 w/ 1 RBI
- Geoff Klein went 1-for-2 w/ 1 BB and 1 R
- Luis De La Cruz went 2-for-3
- Jeremy Patton went 2-for-3 w/ 1 2B and 1 BB
- Ronny Gil went 1-for-4 w/ 1 RBI and 1 SB
- Jonathan Rodriguez and Nick Longmire both had pinch hit singles
Pitching:
- Anthony Ferrara was superb: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB and 7 K
- Logan Billbrough and Chase Reid proceeded to blow the game for the Mr. Ferrara and the Cardinals

Ferrara seems to be improving each year although he was impressive when I saw him in the playoffs with QC. he could be the next to be promoted especially if another starter comes off the DL at PB On a major league note, good to see Walters having success with the Twins.
One outstanding game and you are ready to promote him? Going in to last nights game he still had more walks than K’s – this in a league where the pitcher shouldn’t be afraid to throw the ball over the plate. He has shown steady improvement his last 3 games but I dont think he is ready for a promotion yet.
Not many positives in this, but I agree that Ferrara’s outing qualifies. What does he throw? You don’t hear much about him.
erik posted a brief scouting report back in 2008: http://www.futureredbirds.net/2009/02/20/young-pitchers-2009/. I haven’t heard anything about his stuff changing since then.
Fastball, Change, Curve…standard fair.
I saw him pitch last season. He has a shot but he isn’t missing enough bats for my taste. Every pitch is good but he is missing a good 2-strike pitch, something nasty.
It’s good to see Zack Cox’s back show a little life this week.
Was his back dead for a while? ;o|
I didn’t say I was ready to promote him, and I am more interested in results than something as meaningless as a strikeout/walk ratio. I will take a 2.2 era over strikeouts any day.
If you imply he should be the next pitcher promoted to AA I’d say that is pretty much of an endorsement that you think he ready to be promoted. K:BB ratio is a result. It is one that the pitcher has a lot more control over than his ERA.
To piggyback on what carica said, K:BB ratio is a result that shows how a pitcher has success, while ERA simply is a (flawed) measure of success that’s more “what” than “how.” Especially when you’re talking about pitchers in A Ball, the former is more important than the latter.
Also, Ferrera has had only 8 starts and 45 innings at this season, so one or two starts, either bad or good, can still greatly affect stats like ERA beyond any real worth.
You are correct that his peripherals don’t step up and validate a promotion. However, unless they want to promote Martinez already, which I doubt seriously, Ferrara would likely be the next candidate to promote if Springfield has a vacancy. I mean, who else? Not Benes, Siegrist, or Sheriff.
No need to promote anyone.
