You are correct that his peripherals don’t step up and validate a promotion. However, unless they want to promote Martinez already, which I doubt seriously, Ferrara would likely be the next candidate to promote if Springfield has a vacancy. I mean, who else? Not Benes, Siegrist, or Sheriff.

To piggyback on what carica said, K:BB ratio is a result that shows how a pitcher has success, while ERA simply is a (flawed) measure of success that’s more “what” than “how.” Especially when you’re talking about pitchers in A Ball, the former is more important than the latter.

Also, Ferrera has had only 8 starts and 45 innings at this season, so one or two starts, either bad or good, can still greatly affect stats like ERA beyond any real worth.

If you imply he should be the next pitcher promoted to AA I’d say that is pretty much of an endorsement that you think he ready to be promoted. K:BB ratio is a result. It is one that the pitcher has a lot more control over than his ERA.

Fastball, Change, Curve…standard fair.

I saw him pitch last season. He has a shot but he isn’t missing enough bats for my taste. Every pitch is good but he is missing a good 2-strike pitch, something nasty.

I didn’t say I was ready to promote him, and I am more interested in results than something as meaningless as a strikeout/walk ratio. I will take a 2.2 era over strikeouts any day.

One outstanding game and you are ready to promote him? Going in to last nights game he still had more walks than K’s – this in a league where the pitcher shouldn’t be afraid to throw the ball over the plate. He has shown steady improvement his last 3 games but I dont think he is ready for a promotion yet.

erik posted a brief scouting report back in 2008: http://www.futureredbirds.net/2009/02/20/young-pitchers-2009/. I haven’t heard anything about his stuff changing since then.
