The pitching in Memphis and Springfield stands out during a generally weak day of hitting.
- Cedric Hunter was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Hunter recorded the only extra base hit for the Redbirds.
- Memphis tallied just 7 hits in the game. They walked 5 times. It was a bad luck night in some ways as Iowa recorded fewer hits and walks but, thanks to a late HR, was able to steal the game.
- Joe Kelly pitched 7 innings allowing just 4 hits and 1 ER. He struck out 3 and recorded 13 of 15 outs in play on groundballs. Kelly’s groundball rate has crept back up around 50%, which would be above league average.
- Maikel Cleto pitched 1.2 innings but was burned by a 9th inning HR. He walked 1 and struck out 1.
- Kolten Wong was 2-for-5.
- Xavier Scruggs was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Springfield, in contrast to Memphis, had a bit of a lucky night. The scored 3 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks.
- Scott Gorgen went 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 unearned run. He walked 2 and struck out 5. For a player that missed most of 2010 and all of 2011, Gorgen has come back in a big way in 2012. He’s an inning shy of his 2010 total, is striking out a batter an inning and has a nearly 3:1 K:BB ratio.
- Eric Fornataro walked 1 in a scoreless inning. Fornataro has been a far more interesting prospect out of the pen than in the rotation. He’s put up good groundball rates, shown exceptional command and proven to be difficult to get a hit on. If there’s a criticism to be leveled, it’s against his low strikeout rate but otherwise, this conversion has been a complete success.
- Keith Butler struck out 1 and walked 1 for his 9th save of the year finishing off the game in the 9th inning.
- Mike O’Neill was 2-for-5. O’Neill is going to need to show some power to be considered a prospect.
- Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Rainel Rosario was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Ryan Sherriff pitched 6 innings of somewhat strange baseball. He struck out 5 and allowed just 1 hit. That 1 hit, however, was a solo homerun. On top of that, Sherriff had an unearned run on his record with 3 walks.
- Logan Billbrough went 1.1 perfect innings with 1 strikeout.
- Nick Martini was 0-for-2 but walked twice.
- David Medina was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- Quad Cities struck out an eye popping 13 times in the game.
- Wisconsin struck out an eye popping 13 times in the game.
- There were 26 strikeouts in the game!
- Dail Villanueva punched out 9 in 6 innings of work allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks.
- Danny Miranda pitched a scoreless 1 hit, 1 strikeout 9th to pick up the win.

Fick gets called up instead of Cleto. Kind of curious since Cleto has been so good lately, his numbers are better than Fick’s and Cleto got called up last year. Is there a service time issue or only a certain amount of options they can use?
Really like what Gorgon has done this year. Wonder how many innings they will let him pitch before shutting him down?
Cleto’s option is already used this year so that would have no bearing. I dont think sevice time is a serious issue. My guess is it was a question of whether they wanted more of a ground ball pitcher (Fick) or a strikeout pitcher (Cleto).
I don’t get Fick over Cleto at all. Cleto has a shot at being something great. Fick can best be described as a Twins pitching prospect.
I suspect you may be overestimating Cleto’s potential, but either way, this move is almost certainly just the next round of a game of bullpen musical chairs, rather than a statement that Fick is going to have a major-league career. The bullpen is rather overstressed at the moment owing to the extra-inning fiasco last night and the weird offensive eruption Thursday. I’d expect Fick to be up just long enough to get a couple of appearances, then go back down unless he shows more than we expect him to. He’ll then be replaced by Freeman or Reifer, and the process will be repeated until either they figure out what’s wrong with Salas or Linebrink comes off the DL. All the time Cleto continues to get work on a more regular basis at Memphis. He’ll be up when he’s ready. They just don’t think he’s ready yet.
Anyone heard anything about that RHP we signed out of the DR for 750K? I’d assume if he passes the inspection he will start in the DSL right?
Investigation still going.
Who are all these strangers that have crashed the Memphis lineup lately.
Maybe it’s like a beer game in the park when strangers wander up and ask to play.
Anyone have a scouting report on Miranda hearing he could be a possible LOOGY in the future what is his repertoire?
Over at minor league ball there’s a mock draft going on. The cardinals are coming away with a pretty good draft..
19. Corey Seager 3B North Carolina HS
23. Chris Stratton RHP Mississippi St.
36. Pierce Johnson RHP Missouri State University
53. Ty Buttrey RHP North Carolina HS
59. Steve Bean C Texas HS
Buttrey is a good pick. Big tall projectable RHP. Perfect Game has him listed at 6’6″ 210 with his FB at 94.
Couldnt find a ton on Bean. 6’2″ 190 Bats L Throws R. Committed to Texas. Perfect Game has him playing C and IF
Stratton and Johnson are both okay picks. Both successful college pitchers.
Where did Trahan go? Was he already off the board at #19, or did the war room pass on him?
Never mind, just found the answer myself. He was drafted 18th, by the Dodgers.
I was part of that pre draft war room. Very happy with the first 2 picks, not so much the second 3.
