Only Quad Cities can pull off a win in yesterday’s games.  The pitching performances were generally tepid but Starlin Rodriguez had a strong night at the plate for Palm Beach.

Memphis 4, Iowa 6

  • Zach Cox showed some life in his bat during a 2-for-4 outing with a double and a home run.
  • Shelby Miller pitched 5.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. Miller struck out 3 and walked no one but was bit by the long ball. He allowed 2 solo home runs.
  • Sam Freeman allowed a run on a solo shot during 1 IP. He struck out 1.
  • Fernando Salas was immediately back in action upon his return to Memphis. He struck out 2 and allowed a home run during 1 IP.

Springfield 5, Corpus Christi 6

  • Kolten Wong went 1-for-5.
  • Jermaine Curtis was 2-for-5 with a home run. Curtis has hit well since returning to Springfield posting a .333/.429/.470 line. As a limited defender at 3B, he’ll need his bat to carry him to the majors.
  • Oscar Taveras was 1-for-4.
  • Chris Swauger was 3-for-4.
  • Jake Shaffer was 2-for-4.
  • Seth Maness went deep into the ball game once again allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits. He struck out 2 and walked 0.
  • Also of note was Michael Blazek, late of the rotation, making his second appearance out of the pen. He pitched 1 inning allowing a run on 1 hit.

Palm Beach 5, Fort Myers 6

  • Mike O’Neill was 1-for-3 but was also HBP twice in the game.
  • Starlin Rodriguez was 4-for-5 with a double and a triple.
  • Jeremy Patton was 0-for-3 but walked twice.
  • Todd McInnins went 5 innings allowing 5 hits for 4 runs (3 earned). He walked 1 and struck out 1.

Quad Cities 4, Cedar Rapids 1

  • Tyler Rahmatulla was 2-for-3.
  • Colin Walsh was 1-for-4 with his 11th home run of the season.
  • Hector Hernandez struck out 6 in 6 innings of work. He allowed just 1 run on 4 hits and 3 walks.
  • The River Bandits turned a trio of double plays to help out their pitchers during the game.

  1. Mrs. TLR says:

Jermaine Curtis will not have to worry about the majors.

However Seth Maness may want to start house-hunting in the St Louis area.

  2. illinoiscardinalfan says:

    I’d suggest a rental.

    • Robby says:

Maness kept the ball down the whole game he also produce 16 groundouts.

      • Mrs. TLR says:

Strike-throwers like Maness, Brad Thompson, and PJ Walters tend to reach the majors.

P J has become the ace of the Twins and is matched up today against geek favorite bonus baby Rick Porcello. Should be a great showdown.

        • Forsch31 says:

The Twins are a major league team?

        • azruavatar says:

Note to self: “Mrs. TLR” has an extremely low threshold for calling someone an ace.

          • Mrs. TLR says:

Walters out-pitched bonus baby Porcello today. Good fun.

Prospect geeks used to weep when we bypassed Porcello.

            • azruavatar says:

This is one of the least rational things I’ve ever seen said on here. Clearly those of us who preferred Porcello to Pete Kozma were right. This isn’t even debatable.

And Walters didn’t exactly “out pitch” Porcello considering Walters walked 5 guys in 6 innings. The Twins were able to cobble together more runs against Porcello than Walters but Walters was hardly a good pitcher today.

You should say blatantly stupid things less often. It’s incredibly annoying. I can handle people being contrarian or playing devil’s advocate. I won’t accept what amounts to anti-intellectualism.

              • jjray says:

arzu, isn’t anti-intellectualism part of the democratic, all-inclusive nature of the internet? And the case of PJ Walters carries that sentimental element that may cloud judgment. I’m really glad to see PJ on an MLB roster.

  3. Robby says:

I have a Tyler Rahmatulla as one of my possible sleepers this season anyone have a scouting report on him?

  4. San Diego Paul says:

Was Taveras’s injury from the colision with a teammate more significant than
first thought. Since that day Taveras’s power has disappeared; his batting average
has dropped; and he misses occational games.

  5. VolsnCards5 says:

@Mrs. TLR- being the “ace” othe twins rotation isn’t much to write home about…also, you throw the term ace out way too loosely

@Paul- not saying he’s not affected by the collision, but remember he is 19 in AA…to think he would hit and hit and hit with no slumps was probably not realistic

  6. Tom s. says:

Well, anyone who wept when we bypassed porcello is certainly confirmed in hindsight. Porcello has been worth 7.2 WAR over 3+ seasons. Pete Kozma not so much.

This is an increasingly bizarre position to take. I’m glad Walters is doing better, but we’re still talking about a handful of games.

  7. rj says:

The best pitcher on a team is their “ace” no matter how good he is and Walters did outpitch Porcello Sunday despite any periferals. Obviously, anyone would take Porcello over Kozma but at what cost? So far, he has not been worth what they paid to get him. Curtis may never make the majors, but he is hitting .370 and deserves a return trip to Memphis.

    • illinoiscardinalfan says:

So any pitcher that a few good starts suddenly becomes an ace? In that case ace is just a generic term for a pitcher. Walters has only started four games. I just don’t think that qualifies.

  8. Tom s. says:

RJ – what are you talking about? Porcello got a $3.5m bonus. He’s paid for his bonus seven times over. A league average starter is worth far more than $3.5m, especially over 3+ seasons. Porcello ended up a steal for the Tigers.

    • Hugecardsfan says:

Your numbers are a little off. He was paid $7.825M for his first 4 years, two of which were not in the majors. Then in 2011 the first option was exercised…. Don’t know exactly what they paid him that year but the option cost was $1.536M. This year he’s being paid $3.1M in 1st arb year. Two more arb years before FA. There’s no way in hell the Tigers have been paid seven times over this guy’s salary.

Porcello has been a pretty big disappointment over what Detroit thought they were getting. His K rate continues to be a disappointment. His peripherals have languished year over year. Both whip and ERA have been on a steady rise.

Porcello feels like a 6 year sentence of a 2011 Westbrook…. Ground Hog day on the budget plan.

Yeah, Kozma was a huge disappointment. I’m not blaming DeWitt and co for not wanting to deal with Boras re Porcello. That was a mixed bag.

  9. Tom s. says:

Sorry, I just looked at porcello’s bonus. Still, that’s more than 7 war for less than $14 m. That’s a great deal by any standard. 7 war is worth about $30m in free agency.

  10. Tom s. says:

Fangraphs has him at 7.3 war. I don’t care for b-r war and rarely use it. For a ground ball heavy pitcher, fielding independent metrics are particularly important.
