The Quad Cities team let the bats out of the bag in a big way on Memorial Day.  Richard Castillo was very good for Springfield and a Memphis team that started only one real prospect (Ryan Jackson for those who wondered) lost to the AAA version of the North Siders.  Happy Memorial Day DFR to all of you, especially those of you that have served and still are serving in our armed forces.  Baseball is a privilege that we would not so easily enjoy without the freedoms that are protected by our service men and women and for that, we Thank You.

    Free Colin Walsh!

    • RCHIII says:

I have to agree. 201 plate appearances is enough for me, he needs to move up.

      • Matt says:

        It’s his 3rd year in A and he’s 22. I wouldn’t get too excited.

        • Andrew says:

He hasn’t played more than I think 25 games each of his “seasons” there. He also is focusing on baseball for the first time completely. He was a Stanford Grad who got his degree in 3 years.

Richard Castillo is reaching “must watch” status……..

Is that the same Cornelius who is forever vernturing into the “Forbidden Zone.”

Cody Stanley’s suspension has been served. In the past, the cardinals have punished suspended players by sending them back one level from where they normally would have been. (Hooker and Ahmady are two examples). Therefore, look for Stanley to at least begin back at QC possibly with a Castillo promotion to PB.

Colin Walsh can’t be stopped..seriously, his numbers are crazy good right now

They are good but he will be 23 in Sep.

To me, more worrisome than his age is the fact that this is his third (partial) year at QC. He started in 2010 in rookie ball and came up to QC at the end of the season, without showing much. Then he had half a year there last year, again without showing much (.239/.360/.378), and presumably with some injuries. Of course the stats don’t tell the whole story, or even much story at all, at that level, and the team must have seen something in him, or they wouldn’t have invited him back for this year. But still.

He’s actually only slightly older than average for the league, but as was pointed out in previous discussions of him, he’s old for a “prospect.” He’s blasting low-A pitching in his third try; okay, got that. But he should blast low-A pitching in his third try. It’s time for him to move up. If he does the same at high A (after applying park/league adjustments since the FSL is a miserable place for a hitter), then maybe he gets interesting; he’d be age-appropriate there.

    Agreed, as well.

Though I would add that, because both Walsh’s plate discipline AND power are off-the-charts this year, he’s already achieved the “interesting prospect” label for me.

I harbor no illusions about Colin ever being a 3-WAR major league starter, but with some patience, pop, and defensive versatility, he might be a *well* above average MLB bench piece down the line….

It’s getting a little hard to fathom what *baseball* reason is keeping him at Quad Cities, as there’s no one blocking him from promotion to Palm Beach (save possibly Starlin R. at the keystone).
