One club outscores the other three combined as the entire farm system picks up wins tonight. A pair of groundball machines take the mound tonight and make me wonder (once again) if we aren’t properly valuing them as prospects.
- Eugenio Velez was 1-for-2 with a home run replacing Zack Cox after he was hit by a pitch.
- Pete Kozma was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Joe Kelly did his thing again recording 12 groundouts over 7 innings of work. He struck out 2 and walked 3. Kelly was responsible for 2 runs (1 earned) in 5 hits. His strikeout rate isn’t where you’d want to see it this season but his groundball rate remains superb.
- Fernando Salas struck out 2 in a perfect 9th.
- Kolten Wong was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- Oscar Taveras was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Kyle Conley had a beast of a game going 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of home runs. He tallied 5 RBIs.
- Jake Shaffer and Greg Garcia both went 2-for-4.
- Tyler Lyons struck out 7 in 6 innings of work walking no one. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits.
- Jonathan Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a home run. That was just his second HR of the year as Rodriguez tries to find a groove in Palm Beach. Rodriguez’ HR supplied all the runs for Palm Beach tonight.
- Cody Stanley returned to action after serving a drug related suspension. He was 1-for-3 with a double.
- Bradley Watson allowed just 1 hit (a homerun) in 6 innings of work. He struck out 4 and walked 1.
- Aidan Lucas struck out 1 and walked 1 in 2 innings.
- As a team, QC had 18 hits, 6 walks and 1 HBP. Every player recorded at least 1 hit in the lineup for QC. They scored 12 in the first inning.
- Virgil Hill was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk.
- Nick Martini was 3-for-6 with a home run.
- Tyler Rahmatulla was 2-for-4 with a pair of walks. In case you’ve missed it, Rahmatulla has been a vital part of the QC offense in conjunction with Colin Walsh. Rahmatulla’s .915 OPS is second only to Walsh on the River Bandits team.
- Anthony Garcia was 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of home runs.
- Matt Williams was 3-for-5 with a double.
- Sam Gaviglio was not to be completely overshadowed by his teams offense. With a 7 inning outing, Gaviglio displayed his customary groundball prowess (16 groundouts, 1 airout) and struck out 5. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks.

Another Daily Farm Report goes by with Oscar Taveras still at 10 homeruns. May 12th was his last one. Should we be concerned? Or no because he is still getting hits?
No worries. Still 19 and developing. He’s just fine.
He only has 10 homers? And he’s already 19? Oh no!
Taveras has just leveled off a bit. Give him a little time and he’ll go on another big run. He can be smokin’ hot streaky. I’m sure other teams made adjustments to how he’s pitched. Oscar seems to be able to counter those adjustments even at his young age. Patience! We have lots of time.
Speaking of patience, I’ve run out of mine for our parent teams bullpen. I want Joe Kelly in St. Louis asap. Maybe even for a cameo start for the ailing Jaime Garcia.
Probably won’t be Kelly, as I don’t believe he is on the 40-man roster. However, it will be interesting to see who starts that game. I attended three or four of Kelly’s home starts at Springfield last season and he exhibited two apparent problems (to the non-scout) last year after he was moved up. One, it seemed like he was trying to strike everyone out with his fastball (sat high nineties on the Springfield gun); and two, he just got killed on weak groundballs that weren’t converted into outs. Was really surprised he started at Memphis, but clearly (at least so far) he has shown he can handle it. The PCL is a hitters league too, and he isn’t too old to still be considered a bona fide prospect there.
He still feels like a (back of the bullpen) reliever long term to me, but he seems to have changed his approach (re: trying to strike everybody out) and focused (even more) on pounding the zone and getting tons of groundballs. Duncan would have loved the kid. Given his extreme groundball rates he may improve a little as he advances by virtue of having better/more mature defenders behind him. An interesting prospect having a very good years so far. Who knows, maybe he will earn a chance to compete for a rotation spot next year? I don’t think it is likely that he will be one of the org’s top five SPs next Spring, but stranger things have happened.
Could Brad Watson’s debut been anymore impressive. He made ONE mistake in six innings……ONE!!! And that’s going straight to Palm Beach and skipping Quad Cities completely.
Brad Watson where ya been?
It would be nice to have some of that QC offense in Palm Beach.
Is Cleto on his way to JFK?

FWIW, Professor Parks at baseball prospectus has an article up on Cardinals prospects. It is a pay article, but you can still read about the top four for free.
A little more on this: It’s part of his continuing “Prospects Will Break Your Heart” series about what could go wrong with teams’ top prospects. The basic answer with the five Cardinals (Taveras, Miller, Wong, Martinez, Jenkins, in that order) is “Not much.” He’s obviously a believer in all five of them and doesn’t seem particularly worried about Miller’s meh start in AAA. Interesting that in his view, Taveras has passed Miller as the #1 prospect, and Wong has passed Martinez as the #3. I also find it interesting that Rosenthal has NOT passed Jenkins as the #5. Everyone still seems to believe that Jenkins has a chance to be really good, although he remains raw.
Tyler Lyons had 9 ground outs to 1 fly out with 7 k’s.
Not too shabby…
It should be noted that Anthony Garcia had 6 rbis along with his 3 hits and 2 homerins He’s quietly having a very good season at the plate.
Amen on Anthony Garcia. His recent tear lifts his overall OPS to .880, and that’s after a miserable 3-24 start to the season.
Thanks for the heads-up on the Parks article at B-Pro, giveml. ;)
May slash line of 343/446/571 as a 20 yo in his first year of full-season ball. Really struggled against righties in April but seems to have worked through that. He obviously isn’t on Taveras’ level, but is he emerging as our clear-cut second best OF prospect? I guess we will know more about some of last year’s draftee (other than Tilson) after short-season ball gets going.
If he keeps hitting like this for another month or two does he sniff PB this year?
Zack Cox got HBP then apparently left the game. Hope it’s not serious…
If Garcia posts another 4-digit OPS in June, I’d give him a shot at the Florida State League, sure.
No rush, though, really. Even though I rate Anthony G. a borderline top 100 guy, I’d be fine with his remaining at Quad Cities this year, then splitting next season between Palm Beach & Springfield.
Anybody here seen the guy play outfield, by the way? I know nothin’.
She doesn’t run very well. And I haven’t seen many balls hit to him in LF.
Congratulations to former future redbird Alex Castellanos (sp?) as he gets called up with the Dodgers.
Castellanos was absolutely murdering te ball in AAA. .349 ISO. Slugging over .700
