Mock Draft of Baseball Prospectus. Goldstein has the Cardinals selecting the athletic SS Addison Russell at 19 and 3B Richie Shaffer at 23. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17238

    • Felonius_Monk says:

I’d love Russell. I think he’s my no.1 choice of the Cards possible options. Shaffer, not so much. So that’d be a very bittersweet first round I think.

who does law having the cardinals taking…he released mock 4.0 this morning

    • Cheapseats says:

Shaffer at 19 and Stroman at 23.

      • Ryan says:

I’d love to see us take Stroman with one of our first two picks, bring him up as a reliever this season and then give him a shot to start next year.

        • Wade says:

I really don’t understand the logic of doing something like that. Bringing him up this year adds him to the 40 man right now when he still needs time to develop as a starter, so you start his clock this year why? If we don’t have someone already on the 40 man that can help in the bullpen, it’s a sad situation.

      • T-Bird says:

        Stroman = Trevor Bauer Light

      • J Dahlstrom says:

I see a lot of mocks with the Cards taking Schaffer. I’ve also seen the Cards in on Addisson Russell quite a bit recently, including Goldstein and Mayo’s mock drafts from today. I’d like to see Russell taken by St Louis if he lasts that long. Been seeing Trahan drop out of the first round too. I’d really be happy if the Cards can grab him with the supplemental pick.

      • Felonius_Monk says:

Jeez. That’d be a seriously low upside first round. NO thankyou. Don’t mind Stroman at 23 but Shaffer at 19, yuck.

  3. Shanky says:

My prediction: 19 – Gavin Cecchini (SS), and 23 – Victor Roache (OF)

    • Felonius_Monk says:

Ugh. That’s horrible as well. Quite a few banana skins in this draft, really hoping we stay clear of Cecchini, Roache and Shaffer.

  4. Uncle Randy says:

    ^^^I’d smile.

Hulet just came out with a mock in which the Cards take Trahan at 19 and Russell at 23, in which case I would climax.

In said draft, as well as in Sickels’, Giolito was available when the Cardinals picked. Question to the field–would you take Lucas Giolito at 19 if he’s still around?

    • Wade says:

Yes, as long as we take BPA at 23 and 36 as well and go below slot with the last two sandwich rounders. But that might become college senior pick territory with Giolito and Russell (at 23 hopefully).

      • Uncle Randy says:

BPA? I agree, I would take Giolito at 19 and then reach for a college hitter like Naquin or Fontana, though I wouldn’t complain if they did that in the sandwich rounds and took Trahan at 23.

        • Wade says:

Best Player Available … I also don’t think we draft him at 19 if he’s available. I would like to see it, but I don’t think it happens.

    • Felonius_Monk says:

Trahan + Russell would require a stack of towels I think.

I wouldn’t take Giolito, I don’t think. Possibility of shoulder issues is scary.

    • Shanky says:

No on Giolito. . .way too much risk that high in the draft. Wouldn’t even take a flyer on him in the supplemental round because of his bonus demands. Hoping to see prep hitters with three of our first five picks. . .any combination of Russell, Seager, Trahan, C. Kelly, or Gallo works for me.

    • Karmaloop says:

Hearing there is a strong chance Toronto is the team that is on him.

  5. Andrew says:

Hopefully Toronto is one of the teams he DOESN’T want to go to.

  6. Hugecardsfan says:

Well, I think I should get all the credit for Taveras’ 5 for 5 tonight. After all, could he have had a night like tonight if I hadn’t questioned his power and complained about his production the past few days? I think not.
