AZ’s Snap Take: College left hander who will need some work. Control has been an issue in college. There’s enough fastball here that the Cardinals can work with him and he’ll have a chance to move up the ranks. The blessings of pitching with your left hand.
Undrafted out of high school, Cooney emerged as an early-round prospect last season when he went 7-3, 3.01 with 91 strikeouts and 18 walks in 99 innings for the Deacons. For Chatham in the Cape Cod League last summer, Cooney had 46 strikeouts to just eight walks in 48 innings. His junior season has been a different story, as he’s been up and down throughout. In 13 starts he was 5-6, 3.76 with 76 strikeouts and 36 walks in 84 innings. Cooney relies on command, so he has been inconsistent because it has been inconsistent. He has a good delivery but seemed to be overthrowing this year. His fastball ranges from 87-93 mph, and he’ll typically sit 88-91. He has good secondary stuff in a cutter, curveball and changeup. The cutter is an out pitch that can sit in the mid-80s, and he uses his changeup against righties. His curveball is inconsistent. Despite a rocky season, scouts like the package Cooney offers and his overall track record, and he still has a good chance to go in the first few rounds.

This seems like another money pick but there isn’t really anyone left to break the bank on.
Actually I’m wrong. Virant is still out there, but that’s a very unlikely sign.
but if you are going to roll the dice with a questionable sign, it would seem to make sense in rounds 1-3 as you get a comp pick if they dont sign. I’ve never quite understood taking easy signs earlier and questionable signs later – This goes all the way back to Kyle Russell in 2007 (but that Descalso kid chosen in the 3rd -Russell was in the 4th – turned out OK.)
We once had Tim Conroy, a first rounder by the As.
Cooney seems like a good choice. Collegiate lefty with a good arm. I likes. Not a cheap sign.
Just from watching the videos above, does it look like Cooney throws across his body a bit? I generally have little idea what I’m talking about in regards to mechanics, but it seems he’s stopping a little short with his plant foot, which is causing him to throw across his body. You’d think if he’d go a little farther out in front of himself with his plant foot, he’d be able to get more rotation with his hips and add a tic or two on his velocity. It might also help with his command.
