Just from watching the videos above, does it look like Cooney throws across his body a bit? I generally have little idea what I’m talking about in regards to mechanics, but it seems he’s stopping a little short with his plant foot, which is causing him to throw across his body. You’d think if he’d go a little farther out in front of himself with his plant foot, he’d be able to get more rotation with his hips and add a tic or two on his velocity. It might also help with his command.

We once had Tim Conroy, a first rounder by the As.

Cooney seems like a good choice. Collegiate lefty with a good arm. I likes. Not a cheap sign.

but if you are going to roll the dice with a questionable sign, it would seem to make sense in rounds 1-3 as you get a comp pick if they dont sign. I’ve never quite understood taking easy signs earlier and questionable signs later – This goes all the way back to Kyle Russell in 2007 (but that Descalso kid chosen in the 3rd -Russell was in the 4th – turned out OK.)
