Jeff’s Quick Take: Mejia looks like a player drafted for two purposes. First and foremost, he will sign a below slot deal and allow the Cardinals to spend their limited money elsewhere. Secondly, by all accounts Mejia is a great defender at short. His offensive numbers don’t hold up as a raw .406 wOBA this year is Park and Schedule adjusted to .357. (The schedule pushes the wOBA up, but the park pushes it back down again.) Snippets I could find on Alejandro(Alex) Mejia after the jump.
Keith Law via Twitter on Mar 31st:
Arizona SS Alex Mejia is channeling Ozzie Smith in the field tonight
Mejia hit .367 this season with three home runs and 51 RBIs. He’s also known as a plus defender in the field.
Mejia, who is hitting .367, earned Pac-12 Player of the Year honors, improving his stats and athleticism in each of his three years at Arizona.
“For the scouts that have seen him since his freshman year … everybody says the difference in what he looks like today and what he looked like as a freshman is unbelievable,” Lopez said.
“And his intangibles are off the charts.”
Mejia is another player who could be looking at a position switch in the pros.
“I think they see a lot of options with him — second, third, catcher maybe,” Lopez said.
Catcher?
“If he can’t cover the ground at short at the next level, they will find a spot for him,” Lopez said.
Here’s an interview with him after a Regional victory:

semantic quibble: can intangibles ever be ON the charts?
Not many people left that we could draft to use that excess money on. It looks like they just won’t end up spending the slotted amount.
Maybe save the 2 or 3 mil for a LA splash on July 2nd? That or be on the phone with Virant and James Wineston let them know we have an extra 2 to spend and would like to on them.
seems like Toronto and Houston played the new draft rules the best so far.
