Round 8, Pick 270: Yoenny Gonzalez, OF

Col of Central Florida

Height: 5’9″
Weight: 170 lbs
DOB: 01/31/92
Throws: R
Hits: S
Jeff’s Quick Take: Not much on this kid, similar to some of the picks last year, so I’m not sure what to make of him. He had 7 HRs in 167 ABs and an OBP of .377. He slugged .527 and was caught stealing more times than he was successful. Edit: The Cardinals have corrected me and he stole 14 of 17 bags for an 82% success rate this year. He was voted an all conference player for Central Florida. He was voted Selective Recruiting’s All-Dade First team in High School. All I could find after the jump.
From the CF Patriots site, this says a whole lot of nothing:
Yoenny Gonzalez: A key member of the Patriots’ core of returning sophomores, Gonzalez appears ready to make a leap in his second season at the college level. A productive hitter as a freshman, the rightfielder became more dangerous with each swing in the just-finished fall campaign. Along with fellow incumbents Christian Coburn and Scott Schaub, Gonzalez gives the Patriots a needed dose of experience and leadership.

gotta say it…in a lot of ways it is like Luhnow never left.
hell where is everyone…we took Williams in the 11th and Foody in the 12th. This shit got interesting.
Will we have any chance at drafting Williams or Foody?
money fixes a lot of problems. i’d imagine that williams set a price at which he’d sign before the draft.
Williams signing is probably dependent on Kelly. If he doesn’t sign, then the odds of signing Williams goes way up.
Lots of interesting names taken after Round 10. No coincidence that the Astros led off the 11th Round with Hunter Virant. Teams punking the new system.
I’m pretty sure any money spent over 100,000 after 10th round will count against budget….not sure how much anyone can punk the system
I think the idea of picking guys like Williams, Virant and Foody, who are projected as high upside but difficult signs, after the 10th round is that if they can’t be signed (likely), the team does not lose the signing bonus assigned to those rounds like they would if they were a pick in the first 10 rounds. Thus a team can attempt to sign the players in the first 10 rounds and accumulate whatever they can chissel off the slot amounts and add it to the $100000 max of post 10th round picks and see if they can get a post 10th round high upside/difficult sign to accept it.
Is anyone else having difficulty accessing the mlb draft tracker for the cardinals selections? I can view the selections of every team except one….the cardinals.
Its a conspiracy, but it seems true.
I had the same problem.
You aren’t the only one. Baseball America’s seem to be working.

Who knows anything about signability/asking price for Williams or Foody? Sound like some exciting HS prospects if we can sign one or both!
If we sign both if them, and Kelly, then I go from being meh about this draft…to being excited by it
Gonzalez is a speedy switch-hitter with a bit of pop. He will cost some money to keep him from going to a college.
I hope we sign Williams, and Carson lot’s of upside their. I like the underslot Ramsey, and Piscotty, and Wisdom picks now.
Piscotty wont be under slot. Wisdom probably not as well.
Wisdom almost assuredly will be. He was something like 161 or something like that according to BA.
Not sure. he had a bad year, he could go back and end up a first rounder with a good year.
He could be a 1st rounder but still only get 500k because he would have no leverage at all.
Everyone is talking about Ramsey getting signed below slot but no one is talking about him signing for only $500K
Let’s hope we don’t pay more than 750k for him. College Seniors don’t have much leverage at all.
If we pay much more than 500k for Ramsey we can’t afford Williams or Foody.
And quite possibly not Kelly either. We need to free up ~$2m IMO to get Kelly. That’s got to primarily come from lowballing Ramsey and Wisdom. And maybe Cooney too, a little bit. After that, the slot values are so low there’s little extra $ to be made with low offers.
I dont think Kelly will take that much – that’s top 20 money. If he insists on that, I’d punt the pick to next year.
Damn, it looks like the Cards knew what they were doing after all…. Good to see.
One nice thing about the new CBA: players have to sign by July 13. So we’ll know if they’re going to be Cardinals in ~ 5 weeks.
That is my favorite thing about the new CBA…this makes life easier on colleges and will get some of these later round picks in to short season earlier. Should really help the high schoolers to get them in some game action so you can really scout and take notes on them then hit EST next year running.
Per Cardinal.com Gonzalez is one of 27 picks already signed.
