Not too many standout performances today as Memphis salvaged the system’s only win and Palm Beach’s game was postponed. Eugenio Velez did have a nice day at the plate for Memphis and Ryan Jackson had an extra base hit, which is always a welcome sight. Seth Maness had a bit of a strange line for Springfield. Details after the jump…

Memphis 12, Albuquerque 6

Springfield 4, Tulsa 6

Palm Beach: Postponed

Quad Cities 1, Kane County 4

How did Wittels end up in Memphis?

    • Chris says:

I was wondering the same thing – I thought he was down in A ball or something. He had that great hitting streak in college – and had a heck of a year that year. Is he a really advanced hitter? Any reports on his defense?

      • BigRob says:

I believe in the matter of only a few days he got promoted to AA and then to AAA.

I’m pretty sure he got promoted to AA only because of an injury to one of the other infielders (Garcia, maybe?). Then, shortly after, he got promoted to AAA because of the injury to Zack Cox. He was promoted for depth purposes, not because of talent or readiness for the level.

    • Andrew says:

Injuries. Recently Wittels went from Quad Cities to EST to Springfield to Memphis. When he went to Memphis Breyvic Valera went from EST to Springfield.

Also: several of our draft picks in the CWS will be on ESPN2 today. Arizona plays at 3 Eastern, followed by FSU and Stanford at 7.

6/4/12: Wittels was promoted from Ext. Spring Training to Springfield
to replace Jose Garcia who went on the DL.

Two days later, Memphis put Zack Cox on the DL after a beaning,
and Wittels was called up there to fill his roster slot.

Looking at Greg Garcia line .260 AVG .400 OBP .390 SLG .790 OPS. What stands out in his line is his OBP. I think his OBP alone could get him to the majors. When I saw him play for Springfield the kid can cover ground at SS and he has a plus arm. As well he is a disciplined hitter already at his young age you can’t teach that.

    • BigRob says:

You say his OBP alone could get him to the MLB, but then mention that he appears to be a very good defensive player as well. That could be a valuable utility player. I hope he makes it. It’s nice to have guys that can get on base and also play multiple positions on the field well.

    • RCHIII says:

I have seen him play a couple of times – I thought he looked pretty good.
